I resisited the bootleg, I resisted ordering the UK DVD.

It's been a long wait, but I've finally seen Shaun of the Dead.

It was everything I hoped it be, funny, freaky, gory, scary and even a little bit moving.

Cool actors from Spaced, The Office, Black Books, Little Brittain and League of Gentlemen make appearances large and small.

But most importantly...Shaun of the Dead is an awesome zombie movie.

Run out and see it next Friday.

And watch Spaced on Trio starting 9/20.

I saw the preview screening tonight!

Guys, do NOT miss this movie. Seriously, it's totally hilarious, dramatic, and brilliant. The zombie makeup is AWESOME, the guy who plays Shaun is a total hoot and his facial expressions and reactions to events are totally priceless. The supporting cast also does a great job. There are even some nods to the Evil Dead series with the cinematography. (Think of Ash's "gear up" scene in AoD) This is easily one of the best movies I've seen all year and ranks right up there with Napoleon Dynamite and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Obviously, they're all very different flicks, but I totally enjoyed the heck out of all 3. See it. Love it. Buy the DVD when it's released. Awesome zombie flick.

I was very surprised how much I liked this movie.

The ending with the
Zombies on TV working in the Hospitality Industry, the Gameshow with them trying to get flesh
had me on the floor.

Bring on the Sequel.

Fucking brilliant flick, highly enjoyable & one of those flicks you can see time & time again and never tire of it, it's just that good. I've seen it at least twelve times since I got the DVD & the
Queen jukebox scene in the Winchester still kills me, plus it features my fav drunken lout Queen song.

Easily one of the best movies of this year by far!

Oh yeah, I saw it a couple of weeks ago, and LOVED it.

Although I don't think it's one of the better movies this year. If you go see this movie with those thoughts prepare to be utterly dissappointed.

Do American's like it because it's a brit flick? So much love on this forum, you guys are gonna make me go out and buy the DVD, still haven't even seen it yet.

By my initial post you can probably tell that I'm a fan of Brit comedy.

That said, from the preview audiences it seems that US viewers are responding to both the Brit comedy and the strong zombie content (in case you didn't know the zombie mythos figures strongly into the American/Libertarian way of thinking).

'I married a monster' <-- Gold. But, eh, what's Spaced on Trio?
Trio is an NBC owned cable channel. It will be showing Spaced (TV series that the creators of Shaun of the Dead made before the movie)

I've seen a few episodes of the second season of Spaced at my friend's place (he actually imported the dvds), and it's pretty damn funny. Tons of movies references, it's pretty much an episodic Shaun of the Dead. Daisy has to be one of the most likeable tv show character of the past decade.

So erm, when was Spaced made?

Why have I never heard of, or seen it?

Was it shown on British TV? Damnit, I need to watch more TV these days...

Spaced was made in 1999/2000 or so, shown on Friday nights on Channel 4. Possibly the greatest show Channel 4 have ever produced.

That is my favorite part too. I watched that part over and over again. They were using pool sticks. LOL

I feel sorry for the mainstream American audience though, I'd imagine a lot of the British jokes will be lost on them.

So has there been any changes to the North American version?

I'm itching to pick up the DVD when it's released here, but not if they go and hack it up.

I want to see this next weekend, but it's only opening on about 600 screens -- don't know if it'll be showing near me.

Yeah, it stinks when filmakers bother to use techniques like drama and tension to create actual characters that you can care about.

I saw it last night and loved it. I thought it was a riot, I can only imagine how funny it'd have been had I gotten all the jokes. I could tell there was a joke with the "How's that for a bit of fried gold" lines, I still thought they were funny, but I guess it's something from one of thier old shows. I was reading that they slipped a lot from Spaced into SOTD so I can only assume that was included.

yeah yeah, I downloaded the bit torrent. I dunno if it was the US or UK version (are they different?) but it was still good. I'll try to drag my GF to the theater to see it when it's released here but we never get to go out anymore with our schedules

I thought the shift from comedy to "serious" was very awkward and not handled very well. Having a bunch of people fight zombies (and bicker over how to fight zombies) doesn't really "create actual characters that can care about". What makes people associate with the characters is probably going to be the first 3/4 of the movie.

There's some pretty big laughs and entertaining references, but SOTD isn't some huge revelation. A decent comedy.

Are they done making Spaced? It didn't end on a cliffhanger, but then it didn't really feel like it was finished either...

I saw this flick awhile ago. It's a riot and a half. The Brit DVD has a zombie commentary track on it. I've heard there are talks of making a sequel already, the so called "From Dust Til Shaun."

Make sure you see Shaun of the Dead so the sequel will happen.

I cant stress how good Spaced and Shaun of the Dead are. Spaced is undoubtedly among the very short list of greatest sitcoms of all time. I wish I was at home right now so I could watch it run on Trio. :(

SPACED season 1 came out in 1999, SPACED season 2 aired in 2001.

Most of the british comedy here in the US is old stuff... people still go on everywhere about Red Dwarf and that stuff started airing here in 1989. Then you have fans of "Are you being served" ('72?) and other shows from the mid 80's (Blackadder and such). Now with cable and BBC America and other channels, there's a much larger influx of british TV.

Back in the days when PBS was the only way to see anything, KTEH in the SF Bay Area was THE station to watch. They were the first to show "The Prisoner", "Red Dwarf", the first few seasons of "Dr. Who", "Blakes 7", etc.

Back when season 2 of SPACED was on air (days before episode 4 would air), I discovered the show and read threads with all the spoilers. It sounded incredible... all these references to stuff people here all loved. I asked all my sources for british stuff, no one had a clue for what I was talking about. I know no one showed it on TV here yet... so I asked a friend who through his love of certain Sci-Fi shows was able to get episodes of those shows on his private FTP not shown yet in the US as well as other british stuff ("Blackadder Back and Forth" within 12 hours of it's broadcast in the UK on Sky One...)

He had no idea nor did his friend, but his friend heard of it, so as a favor to me, they taped an episode (2.4)... and liked it enough for another... and another. Then he ordered the season 1 dvd and watched all of season 1 back to back twice in a row, told us how amazing it was and then shared that with us too. It was something fresh and cool and new... every fan of british stuff we showed it to loved it. Somehow I hooked up Tycho from Penny Arcade and him and his wife loved it immensely. She would tell people to check this thing out, start an episode on the computer to watch without any explanation... and then leave the house. Like... drive off to the store or something... while they sat there without a clue of what they were watching.

I showed it to my friend who gave me Dr. Who and anime in the mid 80's and now works for the local PBS station, KTEH (mentioned above). He loved it and they went after it (because if they picked it up, every PBS station in the country would follow suit...). We found out that Bravo Canada had just snagged it in a 4 year North American exclusive contract.... which means Bravo USA could show it. Every time we contacted Bravo USA, they claimed they were a different company than Bravo Canada and had no idea what we were talking about. We organized a e-mail assault from Nick Lee's SPACED OUT fansite, as well as had everyone who Nick knew that was involved in the rights contact them to get them to realize what they had so they'd air it... and they finally did. They aired 2 episodes on 2 friday nights at midnight EST without any promos or mention of it on their website, then claimed poor ratings/no one watched it, so they pulled it. Even bigger bitching campaign, and almost a year later, they showed the whole series twice... 2-3 episodes per week at 4am EST, but they DID show it. Two runs from start to finish and then nothing.

When I went to E3 after we couldn't get the rights in 2001 (or was it 2002?), I teased some of the british game studios in Kentia on when the SPACED game was coming, and they'd all laugh and said "Hey, if you love SPACED, you NEED to check out 'Black Books'!"... everyone from the UK I spoke to kept saying that. I told my friend from KTEH one day that they should try to get Black Books... that very night I told him at the office, I was at a friend's watching Comedy Central and they ran an ad for this new british series they were going to start airing next week... Black books! I watched it on there, took a little getting used to but loved it. I think it did poorly, though, as the only time they've shown season 2 was at the monday night 11pm-1am airings of shows. Season 3 I've seen online and thought was hilarious.

Now with all the channels, there's so much great british stuff airing... Father Ted, Coupling, Spooks, etc.

At San Diego Comic Con, I went down not so much for the Shaun of the Dead screening (where I did sit in front of Ken Foree in the VIP section, which was nice), but to hang out with Simon & Edgar for a while and get my SPACED dvd's signed. We chatted about Simon's role in "Band of Brothers" and other stuff.

My top 3 that I'd highly recommend to anyone to see are SPACED, Black Books (don't know if Comedy Central will air it again), and Spooks (shown on A&E as MI-5). I'd also suggest "Keen Eddie", especially to anyone who's a fan of "Due South", but that was a US production shot in the UK...

There's a great new surreal series that's just started in the UK called THE GREEN WING. It's set in a hospital...and well you need to see it for yourself really. :D Stars Mark Heap who played Brian in Spaced in a very funny new role. If you like Spaced you'll love it.

And of course early next year...

Dang. I wish BBC America would show these programs sooner, rather than sitting on them or selling them to Oxygen (see Nighty Night).

And even i am moderately surprised
"I've seen a few episodes of the second season of Spaced at my friend's place (he actually imported the dvds), and it's pretty damn funny. Tons of movies references, it's pretty much an episodic Shaun of the Dead. Daisy has to be one of the most likeable tv show character of the past decade."

video game references too - done fairly well as well.
The arguement done as a Tekken fight was fairly funny.

I haven't seen it in years, but there was a sketch based comedy show called "Big Train" which had Simon Pegg and the girl who plays Daisy in it, plus a few of the Brass Eye crowd in it. Some awesome sketches - Ming The Merciless doing the house work, "Wanking is now banned in the office", etc etc...

"Stars Mark Heap who played Brian in Spaced in a very funny new role."

Heap was part of the Chris Morris team for The Day Today (ABSOLUTELY THE BEST THING TO EVER COME OUT OF THE UK), Brass Eye (Second best thing....) and the almost unwatchable "Jam".

Everyone in the world should be made to watch The Day Today / Brass Eye. The Brass Eye Paedofile special is utter comedy genius and managed to offerend millions of people who had never even bothered to watch it.

Father Ted writters also wrote "I'm Alan Partridge" - the "Knowing me knowing you " Alan Partridge series are a little dated, but the "I'm..." are awesome.

People absolutely desperate for another Blackadder can check out "Thin Blue Line" (with Rowan Atkinson as the seargent of a police station) - it's mostly crappy, but has some very blackadder moments.

There's a new Big Train collection coming out. Will be importing it from Amazon UK.

And "I'm Alan Partridge" is amazing. Just imported series 2.

Just got done watching it, some really hilarious scenes that had me rolling, the character development was cool, and the acting was pretty good, but it threw me off.

I'm so used to American comedy where I don't have to deal with character emotion, so when I sat down, I was expecting a movie full of laughs.

but when Shaun had to execute his mom and ditch Ed at the end
that shit was like a train wreck for me. Perhaps if I'd have sat down expecting it, it wouldn't have been such a mood spoiler, but it essentially killed the jokes at the end of the movie for me

Yes! That's exactly my problem with the film.

1st half = Golden comedy 10/10 stuff
2nd half = normal not that funny zombie movie 7/10 stuff

And what sucks is that the first half is so good that it makes the 2nd half look that much worse because it's such a drop in entertainment from the earlier parts.
