Japan doesn't get Taladega Nights.

Thanks god...

I´m not all interested in movies, but I have been tempted to buy Kingdom of Heaven to check how it looks in HD as I liked that film and has an awesome scenography IMO.

Lyte Edge, do you has 1080p or 720p? It would be nice to hear more impressions about how it feels (my 26" Bravia is 720P and I don´t really want to buy another HDTV for 1080p at least it makes a huge difference).

I guess, when I say "our," I mean the site I'm part of, not as in I was there buying the PS3. So, I'm not sure what he Nick paid... I do know that he has to buy a new one, because it was too short. *heh*

I think the pics died from hotlinking (lol) or something, lemme rehost them.

edit: fixed.

That is awesome. I love how Sony is treating this thing as open platform and not going the proprietary route like MS.

Bahahahaha... oh man. So awesome. Ghetto PS3 rig :p

Somehow you just know third party accessories manufacturers are going to offer some way to make that a more feasible option!

Don't see why it wouldnt. Pretty much the big difference between laptop drives and desktop drives, as you can expect is the size. I dont think there are any huge technical barriers between them.

as long as the hard drive is sata it should work, which in that picture the red cable is a sata cable. but its definately not the most pleasing thing to look at with a hard drive hanging out. :lol

the only thing that i could see it not being able to work would be that the hard drive power isnt not connected to the playstation 3 power, but its been done similarly on the ps2 so that might be a non-issue.

Actually, yeah...like a t-shaped peripheral with the base of the T being the part that fits into the internal drive slot and is basically a package for the cables and the top of the T fits the PS3 kind of like the 360 hdd fits that machine, and of course houses the hdd itself.

oh you gotta love that. thats would be great, but i don't need a box hanging off my ps3 in the living room, its big enough already.

Thats so fricken awesome :lol

All you would need is an enclosure for that 3.5" drive to keep it cool and protected. I guess were not restricted to even the 2.5" storage limits.

400GB Drives? Hmmmm lol. I wonder whats the limit as far as disk space goes that the PS3 will see.

I have half a mind to just go out to Best Buy, get a Best Buy Store Credit Card and get a PS3 that way when their in stock (instead of straight up saving)

Ok peeps. Trying to post with PS3. The brower is great. Smoothest scrolling evar! jGaffers add me I'm "winston"
Not sure if you know this currently as theres no other regional ps3's out besides japan at the moment, but will japanese ps3's be able to be added to the friends lists of NA or Europe ps3's?

And also, can you register a playstation network account without a credit card? say for example you dont buy anything on the playstation store, you just want buddy lists. I ask because I dont plan on using my credit card on the network, but hopefully I'll be able to find "playstation cards" for buying on the playstation store.

edit: nvm the second question, Lyte Edge answered it in the other thread.

No need for credit card to do Buddy stuff. Buddy system seems to be global. With nicknames on a first come first serve. I am grabbing Amir0x as we speak (j/k).

thanks, thats all very great news to me personally.
I'll be sure to add you jp-gaf'ers next week. :)

Somebody should make a Playstation ID thread in the other forum.

Hmm..
Anyone has pics of the 20GB model (out of the box)?? :) [actual pics, not those renders from the official site..hehehe]

Impressions:

1st impression: BOX IS HEAVY HOLY CRAP

2nd impression: Okay, so yeah, this system is definitely Xbox 1 heavy and big/bulky. Maybe even bulkier-looking. No power brick though, which is nice.

In the 20gb box, you get one controller, USB cable (for the controller; same type as the PSP USB cable), A/V cable (same as PS1 and PS2, so no need to buy new ones!), and an ethernet cable.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to get sound if I hook the system up to my PC monitor. I got an HDMI to DVI cable, but I see no way to get sound!

3rd set:

Okay, so far, I've done all the setting up and have tried Ridge Racer 7. Here's the deal:

-Haven't hooked it up to a monitor yet; currently playing on my 480p Sony Wega TV.

-The system interface is just like the PSP, only with more options.

-You don't need to buy the PS1/PS2 memory card adaptor unless you want to transfer your data from existing cards over. You can create virtual memory cards for BOTH PS1 and PS2 on the hard drive. I have a PS2 Max Drive device, which uses USB flash drives for memory storage, so I should be able to transfer all my game saves over without having to buy it. I'm going to likely just keep playing PS2 stuff on PS2 though, although PSX games on the PS3 will be nice.

-Tried a PS2 game (Melty Blood), and the system automatically changed the resolution to normal, not the default 480p. I want to see what happens when I hook it up to a monitor...

-Got online and accessed the Playstation Store, BUT...they only take JCB, Visa, and Mastercard. I have AMEX, so right now I'm S.O.L. if I want to buy anything. I assume point cards will be sold in stores like the XBox 360 has, though. Also the store is only for Japan, since it's not out elsewhere yet. I wouldn't be surprised if I can switch to the U.S. store once the PS3 is released in the States next week.

-Ridge Racer 7 = Ridge Racer 6.5. It's only got six new tracks, the rest are from Ridge Racer 6 and look basically the same. There's a few small new effects here and there, and I think the color looks richer, but that's really about it. Probably going to be disappointing for a lot of people who already played the crap out of RR6.

-HOWEVER...the new tracks are more detailed and look a bit better than the RR6 tracks do.

-The sense of speed seems faster, especially when using nitrous. There's a new effect that looks really cool.'

-New to the game is slipstreaming.

-The music is all brand new and is AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME so far. I'm loving it far more than RR6's.

-You can install RR6 partially on the hard drive. Load time without installation is around 13 seconds. Once installed, it's about 4-7 seconds. Seems to depend on the mode.

-The game runs entirely in English, since my system settings are English. (I assume Genji and Resistance will be the same.)

-The main Grand Prix mode is beefier than RR6's. You can now customize cars and represent various companies.

-Haven't tried it yet, but I read online play is much better and doesn't have the issues RR6 did, plus allows for more players.

Next up is Resistance...

I can take some for you soon. I'm going to hook it up to my monitor and have to move it anyway...

Thanks for the impressions man. When talking about resistance, please use spoiler tags. Thanks. Looking forward to more of what you think. :)

Thanks for the pics Solid.. :)

And great impressions Lyte, keep'em coming..hehehe..and if you can post your pics, be my guest ..hehehe..I'm getting a 20GB too, and I'm trying to not think about it..by playing Gears of War..and soon Viva Piñata..and some other stuff..

But I can't stop thinking about the PS3..Wii..Resistance..Zelda...darn!!! :(

Your options:

-plug in the AV cable if you want to get sound via RCA
-plug in optical to get sound via TOSLINK

Either way, keep the HDMI in, choose one of the above, and just make the setting change so the PS3 knows what port to look at. If your sound setup is a 3.5mm tiny PC setup then it shouldn't be too hard to get an adapter plug.

:lol :lol Train of thought, stuck in station. Sorry, had to point it out. Thanks for the impressions :)

Anyone might know this, but can you have the PS3 output video via HDMI and audio from the traditional AV output? Or can you only do that if you're using the optical out for audio?

I'd really prefer to patch the audio directly into my receiver instead of into the TV and then into the receiver.

Can you register as many usernames as you want?

I really wonder how this works, and if you can register it on one PS3 but not tie it to that PS3. Because, if when the US versions hits, we US folks can't register our names online, it'd be nice if some kind souls could help us out. I'd like to actually be able to use shidoshi for online gaming once, instead of that jerk always taking it before me.

For real, I also want to keep my BlueTsunami handle

I had to use BlueTsunomicon on the 360 due to me not being able to recover my BlueTsunami username on the Xbox

I don't get it. I plugged the DVI cable into the PS3, and the HDMI input into the PC monitor, but I get nothing. The monitor gets power, but I get no image onscreen. :( Are monitor types possibly incompatible?

If so, I'm stuck playing in 480p for now.

IGN is reporting Sony has included by default a 1 year warrenty with the PS3. :)
Question is, to buy ebgames/gamestop 1year warranty for easy swapping or not.

Sorry to hear about your monitor Lyte Edge. Are there any component to vga/dvi type converters you could try?

if your monitor doesn't support hdcp, an hdmi -> dvi cable won't work. or so says that ps3 support site, iirc.

Yeah, I think I might take some pics. I can do direct captures too, but that would be in S-Video, so it might not look all that great. :)

I played Gears until 4am last night with a friend in co-op...we went through the entire game! I'm eager to see how Resistance stacks up to it. Multiplayer is what I'm most interested in...I think it's going to be very different though. Gears is more like GRAW in multi compared to a FPS run n' gun.

Huh. No idea if it has hdcp or not, but I guess not if I get no picture. :/ Now I'm thinking about selling the monitor and my TV off, maybe next month or in January, and using the cash with some of my own to buy a small HDTV. I don't know if it's worth investing all that cash or not though, especially since I might only be in Japan until summer of 2008 and then go back to the States. Hmm.

The other alternative is to buy a nice-sized SDTV, but is it worth it? My Wega is only 15 inches, but the picture is nice...
