Official Virtua Fighter 5 Thread

No word from AM2 or Sega regarding this so far - I'd imagine that they're hard at work on the next revision in the arcades but I'm not so sure what their plans for the 360 are. Either way we'll probably find out in the next 1-2 months.

In other news I've finally had a first look at a PS3 setup on a HDTV - whoa it's super gorgeous. Can't quite imagine yet how that'll look like once it hits home with VF5 - but I guess I can dream a bit for now.

Wait, WHAT?

No commentary in VF5 PAL? Seriously?
Sure, it's terrible and all, but why would they remove an optional feature that's off by default?

Can anyone confirm that it has been removed?

It was removed due to localization issues. They would've had to record commentary for all European language, or something like that.

odds are the 360 version will get the latest version, but there aren't any new gameplay changes in Version B Revision 1 (PS3 is Version B, FYI). The only things they added were a ton of new items as well as new opponents in single player mode.

Ahh, of course. Localization.
Thanks for clearing that up Reno.

Oh well, makes me happy to have the Japanese release, even if the commentary is only good for one laugh...followed by bleeding ears.

Am I losing any point on commentary ?
Because I just see it as an option to disable as soon as you get the game... I like it in Winning Eleven games... but in a figthing game it can be tedious... I think.

Sega have saved you the trouble of disabling it as soon as you get it.
It's already disabled, or in the case of PAL, removed entirely.

You're not really missing anything worth having. It was a bizarre optional feature that added nothing of substance to the game.

The commentary is tedious and can be distracting by its inanity.

End of round example: Announcer yells "IT"S IN"

or another: anouncer says something 2nd announcer follows with robotic "YES"

It get rather old after 30 min and then you'll never want it back on again.

On balancing news i hope they tone down shun
Shun looks like he only needs 5 moves to win

Actually I really like the Japanese commentary (I've gotten so used to it from watching replay matches) but yeah the English commentary is a little bit flat. You can really hear the energy and emphasis that the Japanese commentator puts into his delivery.

Personally I don't think Shun is that bad, but I guess having to deal with him for so long has made him manageable. Eileen on the other hand... :lol :lol

well i still can't see the point in removing it entirely just because they didn't want to translate it in more languages
it's not like i won't be able to grow my children if i hear that strange language called english

as if in Europe we're not used to not localized games...

:)

i'm going to return VF5 today. sorry gaf, i really wanted to be part of the solution, but i can't justify the purchase when the motorstorm demo gets way more playtime. VF5 plays great, and looks incredible, but the minute i picked the controller up it felt exactly like vf4. I think its awesome, but it feels too familiar, and i will be bored with it in no time. i tried, you guys <3

Oh well, at least you tried. But for me, I'm having an absolute blast with this game. It destroy VF4 and feels really different for me. Loved it at E3, loving it even more now and I got friends to play against too - sweet!

My Euro-PS3 has been on all weekend with people playing Virtua Fighter 5. The game is really amazing, and incredibly slick and responsive. 60 frames per second and nice high res graphics make a big difference to the game, and visually it looks fantastic.

Four of us were big fans of VF4, so it was easy for us to get into. However I totally agree that they ought to have included the training modes from VF4. Some reviews have marked down the game for this reason. Nevertheless, a couple of my friends who were new to the game started to learn it and really enjoyed it, sticking to the 'beginner arcades' in the quest mode whilst they got to grips with it. It's an amazing game, but it's just like Oscar said, not too easy to get into.

My only real gripe with VF5 is the lack of 'auto-save' option. It constantly nags you with 'would you like to save?' questions when navigating game sections.

Oh yeah, and I have the Virtua Stick High Grade and Hori RAP3 arcade sticks, so that really adds to the experience. I'm glad I have a network of friends who are into the game though, itmakes a difference.

There is an auto-save option - go to Options > Save Data > Autosave Settings.

Got the game, and it's a blast. Only problems I have with it is that the quest mode is really dumbed down. They don't have the challenges from 4 Evo anymore, which takes away a lot of welcome diversions and it offered an extra way to earn stuff. The game is beautiful, plays very fast, and I can't wait to take on anyone who wants to quarrel. It's a shame the arcade-mode offers little in variety, but so far I haven't managed to beat Dural (on normale mode.... And I know I suck! :p), so maybe I'm missing something.

Overall, a good game, and the reason to get my PS3 anyway.

Got the EU version and i'm puzzled as to what the data install option does? it's like 10 seconds load time per round and that can't be right...

Well, loadings are reduced a few seconds.

For example, on my 20GB PS3.
-Without Installation: 12 seconds between match
-With Installation: 8 seconds between match

Also, the menus, costume options, Quest, etc..load 2-3 seconds faster.

QUESTION:
Anyone knows, how to get "shirtless Akira"??? hehehehe...Or who I need to fight and where?
Since yesterday, I went with Akira from 10th Kyu to 3rd Dan in less than 2 hours..I got all spheres before beign a 1st Kyu..and yet, no sign of the shirtless one.. :(

You get items when you reach certain ranks. 5kyu you get an item, then 1st Dan you get a costume. 5th Dan will net you the shirtless option.

Based on the import version running on a 60 gig ps3. The load times are exactly what it's like on test PS3's, which is around 4 seconds max before the match.

well I've got a 60 GB PAL PS3 with VF5 data installed on the HDD and loading times between matches range between 9-11 sec, what am I doing wrong? apart from that this game is the most awesome thing ever

Yup same here (just under 10 seconds) which is why I find it hard to believe the 4-5 seconds claim posted earlier. The PAL PS3 (at least my unit anyway) has a Segate Momentus 5400.2 8mb cache hard disk so it's not like we got a gimped HDD in our boxes either. Unless there is something fundamentally wrong with the PAL version of VF5 (unlikely) then it's basically a case of same shit for everyone here. Shame really...cause yeah it's brilliant otherwise.

I have a Japanese PS3 and JP VF5 which btw is in Spanish too and loads are deffinitelly 4-5 seconds. Nothing like 9 seconds. You just see the screen with the next match and that clock and then next battle starts.

BTW, Nice flag. What country is it from ? Never seen it.

Congrats. That's both impressive and tasteful--two things you don't see together very often.
Thanks.

Liking the setup, hating the camera quality
Nope - the stick on the right is one of the actual prototype high grades.

Yeah, sorry for the quality, was taken on my phone's camera.

Say whaaaaaaaa?

I was getting around 8 or 9 seconds on a US PS3 with US VF5

That's amazing, how did you get a hold of the proto VSHG?

It looks a lot different from the one I've seen.
Cheers :) I'm afraid I can't say exactly how I got it - sorry! Suffice to say I have links with people at Sega Japan.

Yeah, there were some tweaks throughout development of the stick: the one I have was built around the time of TGS last year.

so PAL version has double the loading times? why?

I'm sure if someone posts the Catalonia flag (a region which belongs to the Kingdom of Spain) but upside down and in grey scale you'll recognize it in a heartbeat because of your superpowers, I know people from Vascongadas that share the same ability when it comes to the flag of that particular region of Spain :lol :lol.

I can safely say that the PAL version, when loaded onto the HDD, takes approximately 4-5 seconds to load the next round which is normal for any VF game. But sometimes you do end up having a 7-8 seconds loading time but this doesn't happen all the time, probably once every dozens of games played on Versus mode so it's quite rare.

I'm playing the game on my 1080p 46" HD and 5.1 surround setup. Gosh I love it immensely.

I've played hundreds of quest rounds and never once was the loading anything but 9-10 seconds. The only time i've experienced quicker loads (way quicker 2-3 seconds) is in arcade mode if you loose and retry -- and I'd guess 2 player if you stick to the same characters and setting. Something is off here if people are really getting 4-5 second loads between bouts.

It's something to think about but I don't know... See what happens with other games or maybe move your PS3 to a more opened area so the air-vent can breath. It might not be the cause but you never know until you've tried. Otherwise, you MIGHT have to leave with it or try the same game on your friend's PS3 to see if s/he experience the same issue?

Ok, moving on to the 360 version. Xbox LIVE is a yes but how is the main game looking? My SEGA Japan contact has left for greener pasture so it's hard for me to go see the game for myself. Anyhow, anyone got the word for the game's graphical prowness on the X360?

My PS3 is kept well ventilated and it's the same deal on a friends PAL PS3. Either something is fecked with the PAL version (they have changed its somewhat afterall with the commentary gone) or someone's telling porkies. I dunno...this is way odd.

Need more people to chime in here....

Can I just ask as I've just ordered a Virtua Fighter Stick, what was the defect on the old ones?

The new ones have an S engraved on the bottom is that correct?

It's being ported by the same studio that did the PS3 version (everyone knows that by now), so the Xbox 360 port should look identical. There was hardly any difference in both versions of Virtua Tennis 3, which were done by different studios, so VF5 should be fine.

I don't know anything official though, I'm just assuming the obvious.

If you ever plan on getting rid of it, let me know :P

I'm sort of a stick collector... :)

I never get below 7-8 seconds of loading time bewteen matches in "quest" mode, never! is this a "different Hard Disk" issue or something? I thought every 60 GB PS3 used the same HDD... how come people here get 4 sec loading time between matches???

Recent replay match from me. Taken on Friday night just after work. I literally squeezed in three matches just before last train came a callin. This Brad was damn good (70% win rate, also about 10 or 12 ranks higher than me, and a 20 game win streak!) but like the Akira player I posted earlier, he really took it easy on me. It may not seem like he was taking it easy but I noticed what moves he was using and concluded that he thought this was a throwaway match. Too bad it almost cost him! :p

Played in Shinsaibashi's Sega Gigo arcade

Got a friend coming in from Ishikawa tomorrow, and he was in the regional finals for VF5, so we might get some matches in, but who knows.

Yeah Ogikage has some good matches on his channel. His own matches are great to watch too

You just have to keep on fighting then you'll be awarded it. I didn't receive the shirtless option until my akira was 5th Dan.

Quick question that has probably been answered a dozen times already, but dammnit, its a 1900 post thread.

Will my PS2 official VF4 Japanese Hori stick work with VF5? My roommate got bored and went out and bought a PS3 yesterday and I'm really close to buying VF5. Thanks.

edit: I have a PS2 to USB converter, btw
