Quick question that has probably been answered a dozen times already, but dammnit, its a 1900 post thread.

Will my PS2 official VF4 Japanese Hori stick work with VF5? My roommate got bored and went out and bought a PS3 yesterday and I'm really close to buying VF5. Thanks.

edit: I have a PS2 to USB converter, btw

No. I know because I've already tried... YOu need to get the PS3 Fighters stick I'm afraid.

You need to go hunt down one of these converters.

It's worked flawlessly for me and I've tested it on a few PSX and PS2 arcade sticks.

what is the point to buying more orb disks? does setting quest on hard net you better loot? ive read win streaks on one cab mean less random items and its best to switch cabs. also, is there a way to get higher paying tourneys to appear frequently?

You get a tournament every 20 or 25 matches if I recall, so you can just save after your 19th/24th and redo the last battle until you get one to your liking.

I'm not really sure on orb disks. I bought several with my first few characters and I was always disappointed by the items I got after the initial disk. I really don't think they give you anything you can't get otherwise because the game itself tells you that you can only buy so many (I could be wrong here). I get a lot more items by NOT buying the discs so instead of "wasting" seven item battles I actually get rewards for them.

For anyone interested, updated tier lists for VF5, after the events of the last national tournament.

S: Eileen, Lei Fei, Kage, Pai, Shun
A: Brad, Goh, Jacky, Lau, Vanessa, Wolf
B: Akira, El Blaze, Jeffry, Lion
C: Aoi, Sarah

Wow, so they basically think that there are no truly bad characters. Most of the characters are considered at least good, with Aoi/Sarah being sketchy. Good to see that Lion is only B rank and yet can tear up people, along with Akira. Truly, tiers almost don't matter still, and that is a good thing. Here's looking to EVO where there is more balance.

(I knew El Blaze was going to move up after seeing recent Japanese videos and how good players TEAR UP the competition)

Bboy: Well, at the last national tournament, every character was represented unlike in VF4 where some characters weren't (I believe one of them was Goh, I forget if there was anyone else), so yeah, the diversity seems a lot better now.

I know there's no point in hoping that the 360 version will somehow turn out to be this, right?

Most likely.

Freaking awesome.

But damn that was quick. I mean let me play VF5 for a year at least.

Well by the time the game comes out, VF5 will have been out in arcades for a year...

Woah, for real?

Does it say anything about when they will release some media?

If that is true then holy crap!! This is definitely top news!

AM-net is generally realiable.

Yes, Virtua Kid is sicK! Also, look out for the seriously amazing fight at the 4mins mark.

I wonder how EVO will be handled on consoles, will there be another (hopefully budget) release like VF4EVO or will it be a download? In any case, I hope they add crazy items (the ones in VF5 are kinda boring compared to 4evo), remixed levels and music (but let us choose the originals), a more compelling quest mode and pleeeease add the ability to slow-mo the replays...basically do the same thing that was done in 4evo, heh.

What style do you think the 2 new characters will have? What martial art hasn't been utilized yet? I was thinking of Capoiera but I doubt that'd work:lol

VF5 Version B has lots of crazy awesome items, but the problem is you don't see them unless you play hundreds if not thousands of matches. All the good items are really time-consuming to get and the ones in the shop are boring so it makes people who just look at the shop think the item selection is weak.

When I was playing in the arcades in Japan, I'd see so many insane items that I'd never seen before on the high level players playing locally or featured on VF.TV

I'm the only one among my friends who has this game so I'm trying to unlock items for ALL the characters. It's very time consuming. In EVO it didn't take long before you had a robot head Jacky with a scarf and crazy other stuff but so far in 5 I have him a helmet and a shirtless option.

I like new tier listing, El Blaze moved up some and Aoi I can understand being on the bottom. Sarah, though, I don't know about. She's not as good as Jacky but I rarely lose with her.

I think this is a bit too soon for an upgrade, but maybe AM2 is trying to boost things in Japan. Anyway, I'm curious about the two new characters...

I hate that Aoi didn't receive a VF5 upgrade like the rest of them. She has like, what?, two new attacks?

Everyone else got good useful new changes, but she plays just like VF4 Evo Aoi with a very, very slight makeover. As a VF4 Aoi player it makes me sad and I don't use her now in VF5 :(

Now that she's bottom-tier I hope they really change her up in version C or Evo.

Well, I knew it. That's why I didn't succumb for VF5 Vanilla ;p Then again this is just for arcades, right? No console release?

Looks that way. VF5 hits 360 this summer, EVO will hit arcades in the summer. Unless they want to release a VF game on a console first without testing it in arcades first (hint: they don't), 360 version is normal VF5.

Evo is good news though. Wish they would bring back Takarashi. =(

Man, it's been a long time since I played Virtua Fighter. The last one I played was VF1 in the arcade (back when I thought non-VF Sega was shit).

Now VF - game is awesome, but unfortunately - I am not. :lol

How did you guys learn on it? Just keep playing, or are there some techniques for each character that are "key" and then outside of those you can do up your own technique?

Or is it "Comman training" for the next 3 months?

:( @ Aoi being a low-tier character. I'm a sucker for the cute femail fighters (although her portrait looks like ass, and her voice is like a 40-year old housewife. :lol

Play command training with one character for a few hours. Learn a few go-to combos and single moves that fit your personal playing style.

Then start playing quest mode. Once you understand the basics, it's more useful to play against AI opponents.

Don't worry about Aoi being considered low-tier, she's still a powerful character and she can win matches easily. She requires a good deal of anticipation and in-depth knowledge of the opposing character, but she is a deadly gal in her own right. Even though it'll seem fanboyish, VF is one game where tiers really don't matter all that much. Whenever I face off against any Aoi I cringe every time. Her, Eileen and Kage are characters that I just don't like facing at all, no matter what the level.

If you really want to learn any fighting game, you can think of it in three stages. First, learn your character's movelists and learn some simple combos. You don't need to learn more complex combos that require walls or weight classes when you're beginning. What you need to learn are what's going to work with everyone. I think a lot of people make the mistake that they gotta learn all this character-specific stuff at the beginning, when simple, general combos are the best way to go when learning a new character.

Second, learn what moves to use in specific situations. For example, when playing Aoi, learn when to throw out her elbow, learn when you need to use her sweep. When I was learning to play Lion, for example, I had to learn when to use his f+K+G (roundhouse kick) at the best times, which is usually when someone tech rolls after a hit, or if someone tries to evade my next attack.

After you know what moves to use in what situation, learn what moves you can substitute in those same situations. Eventually whoever you're playing is going to catch on to what you do, so you'll want to learn the mix-ups for your character. For a very basic example, I know that if my opponent is going to anticipate my roundhouse kick with Lion, I can mix it up with his roundhouse sweep, which will beat his high guard and still beat his evade. For Aoi, if someone anticipates your low sweep and tries to block low, you can substitute that with her elbow.

I think, once you've done that, you can pretty much start learning all of the more difficult combos and strategies.

1up has posted a review of Sega's High Grade stick--a very good one, obviously. This won't affect any of the regular posters here, of course, but I thought it worth mentioning.

anybody now what happens at the end of quest mode?

at some point you'll get a final tournament, followed by credits. you can of course keep playing that character.

That's right. I'm currently a Destroyer with Lei Fei, completed the final tournament and defeated all the Conquerors. I'm now trying hard to beef my character to become a Conqueror but it's become quite a mission.

Quest mode aside, I'm practising my character shifting and going through the expert theories to get myself to the next Saiyan level.

Damn, i love this game!!

New interview with the AM2 team, and they're currently working on VF5 Version C for the arcades. Will this appear on the 360 version? I hope so, but I doubt it will...

http://www.virtuafighter.jp/dk_f.html

Three big new additions to this newest version of VF5

Bingo mode: seems like you can play this after a VS match. Basically, a bingo sheet will come up after the match. It seems like it's only for decoration, but eh.... It only shows up on VF.net replays too, apparently. If I'm reading it right, that is.

dk_p01.jpg

Item Quest Mode: Unlike Knockout Trial mode, this is a new bonafide mode where you do battle against CPU opponents, and if you're able to beat all comers, you'll receive an item. I think this is being implemented because VF5 is not all that popular in the arcades, and it gives people more of an incentive to play the game, even if no one is around. The game really needs all the help it can get (it's getting destroyed by GGXX Accent Core, Gundam and Arcana at the moment...)

dk_p02.jpg

Combination costumes: You can now take the best aspects of two costumes and combine them into one! So, if you want to use Eileen's top from Costume A with her bottom from Costume D, it's totally possible.

dk_p03.jpg

That would all be really nice to see in VF5 on 360. Or is this going to be another Final Tuned...?

How is Battle Fantasia doing in the arcades rankings? Bomb?

It's not Final Tuned or Evolution. This is Version C.

They said in the interview that working on an Evolution type of game right now would be difficult, so they're working on stuff like this which is a little easier to do for the time being.

Reno said:

Right, I get you. I mean in the sense that Final Tuned never saw a home release.

Uh, but wouldn't an Evolution type upgrade be exactly what it really needs for a spark in popularity, Sega?

love it
btw, for people wondering,a x-arcade stick thru the ps2 adapter works for both ps2 and ps3 games :)

Im GOH , CONQUEROR 570 wins 39 losses (93.xx%)

Goh rocks nuts off.

I don't know if the 360 version is going to turn out to be VF5 Evo, but I hope AM2 releases this in a discounted price for PS3, because back in PS2 buyin both VF4 & VF4 Evo was "painful" experience!

In any case if 360 gets VF5 Evo, then the PS3 owners will be utterly fooled.....
