'Taken' scores box office touchdown. Fox's action pic wins Super Bowl weekend

Twentieth Century Fox's Liam Neeson action-thriller "Taken" scored a historic touchdown at the domestic box office in proving for the first time that male-driven pics can successfully open on Super Bowl weekend.

Film grossed an estimated $24.6 million from 3,183 runs, the second-best Super Bowl opener after last year's tween girl hit "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both World Concert Tour" ($31.1 million), according to Rentrak.

Studio have long steered clear of debuting male-favored titles in this slot because of the steep drop in theater traffic on Sunday. Instead, they use the weekend to rollout horror titles and romantic comedies, two female-driven genres.

Besides "Taken," this year was no exception.

Paramount's horror entry "The Uninvited" grossed an estimated $10.5 million from 2,344 runs to place No. 3 for the weekend behind "Taken" and Sony's holdover sleeper hit "Paul Blart Mall Cop," which declined just 35% in its third sesh to an estimated $14 million for a cume of $83.4 million.

Placing only No. 8 in its debut, Lionsgate's Renee Zellweger-Harry Connick Jr. rom com "New In Town" grossed an estimated $6.8 million from 1,941 runs.

Among Oscar hopefuls, Fox Searchlight's "Slumdog Millionaire" continued to dazzle as it upped its theater count to 1,633 in its second weekend in wide release. Film, which won the DGA's top award on Saturday, grossed an estimated $7.7 million for a per location average of 4,703 runs for a cume of $67.2 million in its 12th sesh.

The Weinstein Co.'s "The Reader" and Focus Features' "Milk"--also Oscar best pic nominees--both expanded nationwide to so-so results.

"Reader" grossed an estimated $2.4 million from 1,002 locations for a per screen average of $2,369 and cume of $12.6 million. Pic was up 69% from previous sesh.

"Milk" grossed an estimated $1.4 million from 882 locations for a per location average of $1,603 and cume of $23.4 million.

I'm surprised it did well having been readily available for months, glad to see piracy isn't as prevalent as I had originally thought :D

btw, it's the biggest January ever in terms of revenue and second highest ever in ticket sales, just behind 1998. One hell of a month.

1 January, 2009 $1,011,942,118
2 January, 2008 $841,065,689
3 January, 2006 $777,251,274
4 January, 2005 $755,014,382
5 January, 2004 $748,233,492
6 January, 2003 $741,788,807
7 January, 2002 $730,887,961
8 January, 2007 $728,777,024
9 January, 2001 $708,153,009
10 January, 1998 $674,380,899

I think most critics had a problem with the fairly thin plot. But who goes to a movie like Taken for the plot? It's Liam Fucking Neeson beating the shit out of Albanians for more than an hour. This trained the fuckng Batman. Great movie, I look forward to the
hopefully unrated cut
Blu-Ray.

Wait, Australia got Taken at the movies AND then released on DVD before America even got it? Did I fall into bizarro world?

Taken is awesome, except for the spastic, shacking camera in the driving scenes.

Woah, what?

I think I remember seeing Taken in the theaters like 3 months ago, probably more. I live in Honduras. :P

Yeah me too...weird that it took so long to get to the states. Good movie, even if it's just The Bourne Neeson. .P

Its FOX, shouldnt surprise anyone. I advise everyone to import the DVD/BD rather than buying the North American version.

I'm sre the DVD/BD will have the UNRATED version. Which will just be the original international version.

On DVD, sure. But for us Blu-ray owners, Ive noticed a trend where we dont seem to get these special editons and whatnot.
