Damn it, why did this thread have to go back to the hatefast that was teenagers going "rofl old games suk lol" without even having played them? It was much nicer when we got to have fun and talk about the week's XBLA game release for a while. :(

Agreed, I would like to go back to this.

I am so looking forward to Super Contra. I didnt get to play this much in the 'cades in my youth as I only knew of one place that had it and that was a long way from home so this will sort of be a new experience for me. Looking forward to learning the ins and outs of this one and see if I can finish it on one credit like the original Contra.

Hey now, I was hating on everything! :)

I am a youngin' - 21 - but I can remember playing something similar to Rush 'N Attack at some point in an arcade machine. But did you see how they're trying to sell it in that video? That video is basically telling you this game is no more than "push forward, tap punch several times, repeat". The two-frame hit animation looks awful as well.

If they want to add 'remake' style to a game, they really should go all out. There is quite a lot you can do with very simple design - use of shaders and whatnot. Hell, just look over at the World War 2D vid some guy did on this forum. Some nice back and foreground effects with some pretty decent, simple graphics. If theywent back and did this to Rush, perhaps add some new mechanics, then it might be worth more of a look! :)

As for T&F, why not make the ultimate simple T&F game, taking the best parts of all the 80's T&F games, and adding simple-but-workable 3D graphics. I mentioned Athlete Kings before, which is essentially T&F with 3D, if they went that route, complete with mustachio'd red head dude, I'm all for it. How can you screw up 2 button tap-tap-tap-jump gameplay?

Yie Ar honestly seems to work and look pretty for what it is, but I get the feeling that it'll last you 10 minutes and kind of ruin the nostalgia. Why not go a bit further with a panning camera following the action, have some tall grass breezing in the background etc.

Tron looks very simple game wise, which is fine, but add some extra oomph, and make it look like the movie a bit more. with more SPARKStm.

If you're going to change the mechanics, you may as well just make a new game entirely.

I suppose that this thread is a good place to note that Catan has 22500 people on the leaderboards, that is $225,000 in revenue in a little over 3 full days. I believe this is a good sign, considering, its a ****ing board game.

Wow @ Pinball landing at #3 overall. It must be doing really well.

Well, that's what the game is. It's not as easy as all that, though. Of course, it is a very simplistic game but it is still everything I said above. I mean...it IS old. Knocking it due to that fact is just lame, if you ask me. Kinda like laughing at black & white movies because they "couldn't afford color lol" or something, you know?

Digital Eclipse has an angle that I really enjoy, actually. It's not that their graphical remakes are lazy (well, they still kind of are), it's that they do very subtle touches that still stay very true to the original game. Personally, I love it.

Why not? Because that'd result in a $60 retail game, and then you'd bitch about that fact instead. :P

You seem to forget that these games are less than $5 and even though they do well comparatively, they aren't bringing in the billions.

Because that's not what Yie Ar Kung Fu is.

Like someone already said; doing all the things you suggest would result in completely new games, and I don't really see the point of that.

Bring on the board games, XBLA devs. Please.

Devs can add levels or redo the graphics if they like but they better still include an original mode if they do. If I buy Track & Field it better be the Track & Field I played in 84. Jetpac got the balance right and so has Double Dragon.

Where is:

Chess
Drafts/Checkers
Mahjong

All well know games that would be awesome additions to XBLA without the need for any licenses, Come on MS.

Even tho is basic stuff I hope MS/Carbonated do some special magic on these to really show off the XBLA platform.

MS could do a good job getting casual guys into XBLA with these but they have been a long time coming!

Indeed but Carbonated Games are not the ones who are doing this Classic Board Games compliation, the dev being cited is Freeverse Software.

In before Remy comes in to SING THE PRAISES of Freeverse.

But really, Freeverse is amazing, though you'd have to be in the Mac community to have ever of heard of them.

Praise be to my former employer! Praise praise praise!

But yes, I believe a board games package as done by Freeverse was announced in the Camera pack-in materials. As far as I know, it's still being worked on.

If you have access to an iMac made within the last two years, Big Bang Board Games is probably pretty similar to what will be brought to XBLA - with appropriate changes and adaptations for the platform, of course.

I dunno. I purchased Pinball FX and Catan this weekend, and FX is starting to bother me. The first table is AWESOME. I seriously put in about two-three hours just playing that table. It looks nice, I can build a strategy towards going after different modes, and the layout of the table makes sense.

The next table sucks. Seriously, its horrible.

The third table isn't as bad as the second, but its still not all that good. However, it reminds me of Last Gladiator more than the other two.

So essentially, I paid 10 bucks to play one table. Yay.

Catan is interesting, though. That's gonna take more time for me to form an opinion on. I will say that the text is small. REALLY small. Like Dead Rising small.

The second table isn't so bad on FX, particularly when you've had a bit of practice with other tables. Agents I wasn't too impressed with either until one day it clicked for me.

Catan rocks online - it's perfect because the games don't take too long.

it's almost criminal there's no Chess game yet... and it makes no sense, do they not like MONEY? there's an absolute fortune waiting to be made with a XBLA Chess game.

p.s. on this tangent, i'd also love to see Karate Champ and Rock n' Roll Racing on XBLA. :)

I have a problem with a 1500 points card. Everytime I try to redeem the points it keeps saying Invalid Code.

I've checked it like 6-7 times and there are no typos. What can I do?

Call the 800 number for Microsoft support. Make sure you set aside a good hour or so. :\

Do we know how much Double Dragon will go for this wednesday? I'm probably going to pick it up because it's fun and the enhanced graphics look nice. Appreciate the classics, people. Backwards elbow FTW!

New Wing Commander: Arena Intervew Transcript and Screenshots

Q: I know you guys are also working on Wing Commander, and this this is crazy cause you guys haven't even released Street Trace yet. So how'd that happen with EA and you guys. Did EA contact, contacted you guys, or you went up to them? Want to, anybody want to...

A: Uh, yeah, EA... uhm, I, you know, I think they heard we were developing action titles for XBLA, so they, they went with us to develop Wing Commander for them, and that's, and that's gone pretty well. I don't know how much we're allowed to say about it with EA, but ah, but ah, but yeah, no, it's gone really well and EA's been great, and yeah, so.

Q: One question, though, because I know Wing Commander is also a Xbox Live Arcade, I mean Xbox Live, with Street Trace. So how is it different working on a new title straight to Xbox Live than a classic, you're bringing it back but now it's going to have a new, you know, Xbox Live for the first time in this game. How difficult was it, like, to work on...

A: Wing Commander, yeah, I mean, when you're dealing with a title like that, a classic, you really have to spend a lot of time with the universe and the property. You have to be very careful with it because it's, you know, it's a great classic property that you don't want to mess up. So, so yeah, we did some great stuff with, you know, the old ships and sort of, you know revitalized them and put some new life into them. And the gameplay, the gameplay is a lot different from the classic, so it's sort of a different type of game there. But, but yeah, overall, the transition was good, I think the creative team did a great job sort of getting the art straight and the universe right.

Q: So, what, whats next for you guys now after Street Trace and Wing Commander? What's the plan? You gonna take a break or are you gonna work on other stuff. Anything you want, little hint for the fans?

A: Ah, I don't know if we'll give any hints, we do have another one in the works, it's different, it's a detachment from, you know, what, what we're doing now. A little comedy, a little action, a little adventure. It's fun, yeah. Did you want to say?

Q: Say something, or?

A: Yeah, no, that, that's it, we're doing an original title, the next one. We've also got some serously cool ideas now with Street Trace for the second one. Some, some, some really, I don't know if I can talk to you much about it now because the designs are all just sort of just like flying around. I don't want to say we're going to be doing this and that when the designs aren't all nailed down, but we do have some really cool ideas for the sequel that we've been developing. So the sequel, the new game we're doing, potentially we'll see what EA wants to do with Wing Commander and yeah, that's the plan, between those three, the three games. That's kind of all working on. That's it.

I'm excited for Track & Field but I'm concerned about potential cheaters. Does the 360 have controllers with auto fire? Can the game be made to detect these?

I am already well sold on said title. Space combat is an almost lost art, it seems.

Street Trace is giving me horrible flashbacks of that god awful hoverboard game that came out for the Dreamcast when it launched. What the hell was that called again? Trickystyle or something like that. Blarg.

Yea, that was the name, Trickstyle.

Also, just for you Mr, Potato, a quote pulled from that interview link I posted last page.

When questioned on Microsoft’s recent decision to increase the XBLA size limit from 50MB to 150MB, both Glazer and Canessa praise the decision. Canessa’s praise may be taken with a grain of salt. Few, if any, of PopCap’s titles demand such an increase and the decision poses a challenge or two for Microsoft and the development community.

According to Canessa, the 50MB limit effectively capped the number of old titles being released and enabled independent developers to participate in an exciting new platform. The danger, Canessa asserts, is that by increasing the MB limit, Microsoft could open the floodgates for hundreds of old games, foster a demand for greater complexity and slam the door on independent developers. In spite of these misgivings, he believes that strong “portfolio management’ should ensure the prosperity of the service. “If Microsoft continues to stick to the principles of what belongs in Arcade and what does not – focusing on fostering indie and small game development, keeping the number of games manageable, and scrutinizing games and game quality - the platform will be fine.”

Glazer enthusiasm for the decision appears somewhat more genuine, though it couldn’t have come at worse time for Naked Sky Entertainment. “I think it's a good decision,” he says.
