Dr_Cogent said:What was so awesome about it? That it required its own nuclear power plant to run? Or that it didn't fit in a lot of cases because it was so big?
3Dfx died for a reason. They got stupid.
Culex said:You're thinking of the Voodoo 5 6000. That needed it's own powerplant.
Dr_Cogent said:My mistake.
Regardless, 3Dfx produced it's own demise IMO. Their cards were behind in features, and their strategy of slapping more of the same on a single board wasn't all that fabulous.
Personally, I think SLI is a big waste of money as well.

No, they died because they missed two product cycles, that didn't mean their products were inferior. I would still pick a Voodoo 3 over TNT2 ANY DAY. Consumers were stupid and went for 32-bit colors at 5fps..
Dr_Cogent said:Also, they were falling behind feature wise. Consumers weren't stupid, 3Dfx was stupid. Hell, they were still supporting crappy low res textures with the Voodoo 3. LAME.

tahrikmili said:You know what's lame? To talk out of one's ass with complete disregard for the fact that Voodoo 3's competitor offered 32-bit and higher-res texture support at 5fps at most games and had a worse 16-bit performance than the Voodoo 3. LAME.

NVIDIA has indeed produced a chip that's superior to the new and not even yet released Voodoo3 and Creative, Diamond and the likes can't wait to screw up the sales of Voodoo3. NVIDIA is in a lucky situation, almost everybody in the business is on their side against 3Dfx. I wonder what is going to happen to poor and soon 'bullied' 3Dfx in the next few months.

dark10x said:To be fair, 3DFX's V3 and above did a fantastic job with only 16-bit color. It really DID look very near the 32-bit color produced by the TNT and other similar cards. One thing you have to remember is that the TNT produced absolutely AWFUL looking 16-bit color results while Voodoo 3 managed to almost completely avoid dithering and other 16-bit artifacts. Voodoo 2, on the other hand, had awful output.
