OMG Xbox Live subscription BS

I was a beta test and my account ran through Nov 03, but since there weren't many online titles that interested me, I let it go. I just picked up a 12 month card today to re-activate my gamertag and get a message that my account was cancelled and I need to create a new one.

Before doing so, I figured I might as well call and see if I could get the old one reactivated as I like the name. After being on hold for 25 minutes I get a rep and am told my account was cancelled due to non payment. I said, no I chose not to renew and it was suppose to expire on it's own per an XBL rep. They told me, no, it didnt, and it was cut due to me not paying. After going thru the whole "well, whoever told you that was wrong thing, they told me that the accounts continue to add charges until Microsoft decides to write them off as bad debt. I could however, have my account reactivated, but I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL SERVICE CHARGES between November 03 and today. I said "what kind of crap is that" and got warned that if I spoke in that tone again, the call would be disconnected. I was then told if I would not pay it, the credit card (doesn't matter since it was a webcertificate) and gamertag is now permanently banned from the system.

Needless to say, I told them to keep the old account and decided to create a new account but can you believe that they would have the balls to ask you to pay for service that you didnt use to re-activate the account ?

It makes sense to me... But it sucks that an XBL rep would tell you that the account would die on it's own.

I'm kind of suprised that they are actually giving you the option to pay. Some guy over at TXB said they sent a Collection agency after him.

Sounds like par for the course with XBL.

I bought one of those 12-Month renewal cards in October (Sub ending in November) just to make sure they didn't charge my credit card. I had used one of these cards to extend my subscription after my first year without a problem, but for some reason, when I entered the code this time, it started the twelve months from that date, cutting a month off my service. It's a two step process on the card: scratch off back of card, enter code. There is nothing to screw up. I called up support to get my month back or get that month credited to my account. It was a no go.

XBL support manager tells me that three years ago they gave me more than an extra month (XBL Beta Test), and that I'm still coming out ahead. He sees absolutely no reason to give me my month or my money. Seemingly buying a year subscription in Nov 03 and not having it run to Nov 04 is not considered theft to them.

Lesson of the day for me: stick with the credit card renewal. I still wonder how the BBB would have handled a complaint over $4.17.

yeah, it sucks that the guy told you it would run out on its own.. but you cant expect to stop paying for the gamertag and have MS just keep it on hold for you when you decide to start paying them again.

That's messed up... MS should be more understanding. I know the TOS says you have to actually cancel your account, but it's a bit ridiculous to send out the hounds (collection agency) for nonpayment on something you didn't specifically renew.

funny, i went today to renew my account.

i had the 2 month free trial that came with halo 2.
it expired 2 days ago.

i picked up a year card with headset at least a month ago but forgot to enter it in till today.

seems my account was charged to my card already and i could not find a way to refund that and use the year card.

anyone know if i can get a refund and just use this card.

i know in a year i'll have lost it if not.

I hope I don't have to deal with these bastards when my free 12 month trial expires. Actually I don't expect to since the credit card I signed up with is dead, so I don't see how they can bill me for another year

You will have a problem because although I assumed it was going to not renew at the end of the year, I also had it activated with a webcertificate and since they couldn't get the money from it they considered it as me trying to dodge the charges.

cancelling is such a hassle too

back in I guess it was january of last year I got a 2 month trial

played some Crimson Skies played some CvS2 which annoyed the hell out of me (fuck all you goddamn droppers out there)

anyway I just dont play online enough to warrant spending 50 bucks a year on it so I called to cancel

what should of taken a few minutes turned into 45 minutes of me going "I don't want Xbox live any more" and the rep going "BUT! ZOMG XBOX LIVE HAS (insert something here)" "I don't want Xbox live any more, just stop trying to sell me it and cancel my subscription." for a good 30 - 45 minutes

so f'ing annoying

I believe you can cancel thru the dashboard now. Well it looks like that on mine but I haven't tested yet.

It's about damn time if true. I was really pissed off by the hassle of having to cancel too. I'm not retarded, I didn't call MS because I was unsure if I wanted it canceled. I didn't need some schmuck going thru his checklist of ways to get me to reconsider.
