On paper, the GPU in the Xbox Series X is faster than a GeForce RTX 2080 Super.

At 12 TFLOPs, the GPU inside the Xbox Series X is a tad faster than Nvidia's GeForce RTX 2080 Super, and just a bit behind a 2080 Ti, currently the best graphics card for gaming.

Here's a rundown of graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia in terms of TFLOPs:

  • GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (Turing TU102)—13.45 TFLOPs
  • Radeon RX Vega 64 (Vega 10)—12.66 TFLOPs
  • Xbox Series X (Navi - RDNA 2)—12 TFLOPs
  • GeForce RTX 2080 Super (Turing TU104)—11.15 TFLOPs
  • Radeon RX Vega 56 (Vega 10)—10.54 TFLOPs
  • GeForce RTX 2080 (Turing TU104)—10.07 TFLOPs
  • Radeon RX 5700 XT (Navi 10)—9.754 TFLOPs
There are different ways of looking at this. Analyzing just the raw FP32 numbers, the Xbox Series X offers up around 20 percent more graphics power than AMD's Radeon RX 5700 XT. It's also nipping at the heels of the 2080 Ti by 1.45 TFLOPs. Other factors dictate performance too, however, such as the underlying architecture, memory configuration, and so forth.

There probably will not be a direct equivalent on the PC. However, it's a safe assumption that we will see both slower and faster variants in graphics card form. Given what Microsoft has just revealed, there is every reason to believe that upcoming Navi cards will be equal to and potentially faster than Nvidia's current top offering in the consumer space. At least until Nvidia rolls out its next-gen cards as well (Ampere).

You forgot the real metric

Are AMD TF different from Nvidia TF?

A TF is a TF, but how efficiently they're utilized can vary drastically. Think about what Vulkan did for performance gains back in the day, and RDNA2 is supposed to have features that improve performance dramatically too.

Fast forward 15 years, there'll be a sony branded glass encased chip on a desk with 60 TF and 5 of these stuck together~

What's the next PlayStation going to pack?

For what it's worth, nvidia is most likely sitting on the tech that is faster than a 2080ti. They're just trying to sell through their stock of RTX cards. And like the article says, it's really difficult to compare two completely different architectures (console GPU vs PC GPU).

a 12TF APU in closed system can be used 40-60% efficiently
vs.
12 TF GPU in a PC system

=

XSX APU = ca. 16-18TF GPU in a PC

=

XSX players are the new Masterrace
Yeah no. A 12TF gpu doesn't automatically become a 16TF gpu because you're comparing it to another gpu running in a different environment.

Yup. Devs can much much better optimize games for console. So yeah, Xbox is a beast.

I wonder what the price will be. Honestly, looking at the specs it's worth $1000+
of course it would never be priced like that.

The question is, will we actually see this power? Or is it just like that "Ps3 Is A SuPErCOMpUTER!" marketing crap.

Sure is. RDNA2 is AMD's 2080 Ti killer architecture.
What chip brah? RDNA2 is such a wide term and covers a whole spectrum of cards, from low to high end.
Some people in this thread are really delusional. If you think xsex is gonna have anything close to the 2080ti level of performance, I really think you need to seek professional help.

A more realistic comparison:

Don't look at AMD and Nvidia TFLOPS alone because they are apples and oranges.

And don't just look at one game, as many games tend to run comparatively better than one Brand or the other.

Also, don't judge a chip by It's last gen counterpart.

Alright, I look only at the Radeon RX 5700 XT, ok? That runs in boost mode at 9.75 TF. XSX is running at 12+ TF, so at least 23 % more powerful. That would put it at 59 fps min and 66 fps average, right along 2070 Super. Now add VRS (which the Nvidia cards have, the RDNA1 cards don't). According to Digital Foundry that's another 15 % performance gain on average. 68 fps min and 76 fps average. Which puts XSX slightly above RTX 2080. That is before any efficiency gains of RDNA2 vs RDNA or console vs. PC.

One thick to point out here is the fact that all 12 TF of the XSX is available while gaming (ie. calculated using game clocks). For discrete parts those high TF counts are calculated using boost clocks, and that power is not available when gaming. At least this is true for AMD cards.

That list is really confusing as Vega 64 has more flops than 2080 Super but gets beaten by a large margin in benchmarks.

If anyone wants to see how well PC hardware stacks up to consoles, the PS4 GPU is about equivalent to a 750 ti, so search Youtube for it (edit: it holds up pretty well). I think devs not bothering to optimize for PC CPUs is a bigger worry.

No it will have better performance

In reality Nv specification on paper doesnt reflect real TFLOPs because of the way core boost works on these cards. Many 2080ti are 16TF out of the box and 18TF when OC'ed.

But XSX GPU should be faster than 2080S (at least in raster graphics), 12TF will make it already fast and RDNA2 should bring even more gains than first gen RDNA.

PS4 GPU is basically a HD 7850 with a bit more TFs or HD 7870 downclocked (that is more accurate due the number of units).

If you look at video you will see a HD 7850 OC delivering same graphics as PS4 with similar framerate in multiplatform games (it is impossible to know about first-party yet).

Which chip? the one with 12TF of POWA brah

Can't wait until we actually see some games running on this thing side by side against various PC specs so that people can stop talking nonsense about numbers.

There is absolutely no point in comparing AMD TF's to Nvidia TF's.

Next gen gonna be an awesome time for gamers.

I don't care if the next GPU class will "stomp the XsX and PS5," at least consoles won't be super gimped this time around.

I am excited.

I have a mid-range PC and might be switching back to primarily gaming on console for the first time in years.

I am really happy if consoles will start pushing at the edge of technology once again. And dont forget, 12 TFLOPS on pc and 12 TFLOPS on console is very different. The optimisation of consoles is what makes them get in front of PC

I still wonder how much improvement RDNA2 brings to the table, there are talks about 20% boost over RDNA1, but that seems a bit of an overestimation to me

We're getting better than 5700XT performance in a console.

That's incredibly impressive that a machine that will likely cost $500-$600.

I wanna see an infographic of this. Help me, GAF.

pretty sure in terms of FLOPs the GC and teh Xbox were pretty close. the graphical differences you see between them is mostly due to the Xbox supporting more modern effects and because the Xbox used its HDD as virtual ram for some games, resulting in faster loading or bigger levels with less loading in-between (see Splinter Cell 2 and 3)

edit: I was wrong LOL... I thought I heard that somewhere but the GPU of the GameCube reaches 9.4GFLOPs and the Xbox's GPU a whopping 20GFLOPs :messenger_hushed::messenger_hushed:

Are you going to be ok? I'm worried about you :(
I'm fine. I'm just shocked at how can people actually believe this. I bet the whole system tflops is 12 and not the gpu alone. And since this is likely going to be apu [cpu and gpu in the same chip], they're saying it's 12 tflops for the gpu alone. I'm pretty sure this is misleading and false marketing. But fine. Just remember this post when in a few months you hear the cries of fanboys saying how Msoft has deceived them.

EDIT: I feel bad about the joke.

It's under selling , with cpu in account it's a 12,5 TF system 🤣
