Once-hyped games that are now completely forgotten

I'll nominate another PS1 game:

one_ps1.jpg

I remember it being hyped to hell in magazines. Always brings a chuckle and a "Oh yeah, THAT game" when I see it in bargain bins.

Black & White

It's sad how Peter Molyneux was still relevant in the industry after Black & White.

What was wrong with Black and White? I was only 12 when it came out so I wasn't really following the hype or anything but I loved that game, even though it was a bit buggy. Even really like the sequel!

I remember the last GeoW and GoW games getting fair amounts of hype before their release and I can't think of a single person I know IRL that's played them (I've played the all the other games in the series).

I think most of you are missing the spirit of the thread. For me, this includes games that were hyped by the gaming press that were rejected by gamers.Bad games or games you just don't like don't really count.

Also, I loved this game and was happy it was finally released after all the Dreamcast/from the creator of Tomb Raider/will this game ever be released hype.

Galeon was another title that was suppose to be new and different and then released years after when it looked old and other titles sold its thunder. I think it hand a chance but the developer ran into funding problems. When the press saw it in 1997, it was different and had systems that other game developers hadn't thought of yet. They ended up delivering but just bearly. Also it received very little push from Altus. It was like they published it out of pity.

This one was somewhat hyped. Big budget, big names attached, some TV ads from what I remember, but it really didn't seem to make much of an impact. Not really surprising since it was a cinematic platformer that came out several years after the zenith of that genre.

The press loved this game. Just loved it. Hyped it like crazy. That game was in development hell forever. I think it started out as a Sega Genesis game. Then the CD consoles hit. For a time it was going to be an Atari Jaguar exclusive, then it was coming to the 3DO as well. It finally came out for the Playstation right before the Dreamcast launched and when talk of the Playstation 2 had started. It felt old. It was polished and had some great things about it but it couldn't compete with the likes of Crash or Mario 3d for the attention of gamers.

Remember this?

Yeah...

I don't know if this was hyped or not. I did buy it and could never get past the first screen.

Allow me to take you on a stroll down memory lane:

I don't think Floigan Bros. really was hyped. I know I was interested in it but it seemed to be a game that only Sega Dreamcast diehards even knew was in development. It was announced early. I think before the Dreamcast even shipped and then it disappeared and ended up being one of the last games to come out for it. I remember reading (and i can't find it so I might be misremembering this) that Visual Concept brought in some of the best adventure game developers to give their opinion of Floigan Bros. These consultants tore the game part. Visual Concepts ended up ripping the game apart to its core concept and shoving that out the door.

Brute Force and State of Emergency came to mind. Man, State of Emergency was pretty awful.

Street Fighter x Tekken? Darkstalkers digital re-release?

I am actually very careful for overhyped games. I knew it.. I shouldn't have bought Watch Dogs! Geez.. Well I guess, you always know it better afterwards, right?

Street Fighter X Tekken is the answer to this thread.

The hype in the FGC was extreme for this game, then it came out and it was utter garbage.

Resogun also comes to mind, but only when compared to last Gens Geometry Wars.

Gamers talked about Geometry Wars for what seemed like forever.

I'm going to have to go with Advent Rising. I bought that game day one, and I don't really remember if I beat it or not.

Lol at the Titanfall/Watch Dogs mentions. Really? Just because you don't care for a game doesn't mean that it's been forgotten. Get real.

The irony is because so many people have brought up those two games obviously means neither of them have been forgotten, which is the whole point of this thread.

It's been posted a couple times, but dark void is a great answer for this. It seemed to get a lot of hype on some podcasts I listened to then just nothing.

Most recent: Titanfall

Amazing how quickly that game fell off the mainstream radar.

ps4 owner i presume?

the amount of salt in this thread towards this game is unprecedented.

titanfall is the most fun i've had since counterstrike, and i play it every. day.

oh, what's that? so do thousands of other players?

WEIRD.

all time star-wars knights of the old republic

in recent times watchdogs and titanfall

But people are still actively talking about both Watch Dogs and Titanfall. So how can they possibly be forgotten? Just look at how many times both games are mentioned in this thread alone.

Seems to me both games are still active in people's thoughts, so neither of them qualify for this thread.

Maybe some Capcom 5 love, too?

I love this game. No one brings it up, it's not relevant any longer. I get that it had repetitive locations and the "can't shoot while moving" was a bit much for some people. It was a really gorgeous and fluid experience and provided some reference for Vanquish, so there's some justice in the world.

KOTOR is still regarded as a classic, and has even been released on new platforms recently.

Rise of the Robots was hyped and it was pretty good, but the shareware game One Must Fall is the one that stole its thunder. The shareware underdog versus the big commercial robot game.

Resogun also comes to mind, but only when compared to last Gens Geometry Wars.

Insanity.

Resogun is surviving just as well as Geo wars did, and just received an awesome expansion.

Both completely forgotten about 1 year after release, Sins was even the first episodic game from the internet era that i recall.

Lies I know of this game and I didn't even own it or the system it was one. As far games not spoken about it's pretty high on the people still mention it or at least that gif of it.

I know plenty of people that have, me included. But they weren't the last games in the series. GeoW Judgement and GoW Ascension both came out a couple of years ago.

Can't tell if you're being pedantic since these games are prequels, or if you're proving my point by showing that people have forgotten they existed.

What about turok 2? I was hyped for that game to no end but the final product sucked IMO and I quickly stopped playing it. Though MP as the raptor was kind of fun.

I don't think the series ever recovered after that.

Oh sorry for some reason I forgot Ascension and Judgement were made.

Nox is so good! To this day it's still my favorite Diablo-style loot crawler.

The solo campaign was great and customized slightly for each of its three distinct classes. It didn't take itself too seriously. It had a really fun procedurally generated mode that mixed Diablo and Gauntlet-styled monster generators. AND the multiplayer was insanely unique and fun.

I've never really seen much discussion for it though
