MacRumors Says:

An anonymous source tipped us to an Apple Invitation-Only event to be held at 10:00 a.m. October 12 at the California Theater in San Jose. The invitation itself features red curtains in the background with simple white type in the middle stating "One more thing..."

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has often used the phrase "one more thing" at the end of Keynote addresses at large conferences to bring out new products.

iLounge is on it too

Let me get the speculation list going:

Best Guess:
iTunes Movie/Video Store, all current iPods already have hidden video functionality

Second Best Guess:
Exploiting Apple's new patent for instant play

Apple's own smartphone
iPod white cell - now you can keep all your music in your blood stream
x86 Macs early
Apple Home Entertainment Box
Apple Tablet PC
New iWorks Application Suite
New MacMini
Dual Core Powerbooks
x86 XServes
PS3 runs OSX

I'll go with iTunes Movie/Video store plus upgraded top end iPods (30 or 40GB and 80GB at current prices.)

And lol @ iPod white cell :)

I don't have anything against Apple, but this would be their first product that I purchase.

Interesting... it looks like it'd be the 5th Gen iPods + Music Video Store (I do not believe Apple will offer films or TV; not yet, anyway... plus it's curious that Apple haven't added any new music videos in over a month). The timing both does and does not make sense. It's odd to have a second iPod announcement/launch only weeks after another, but on the other hand why stuff all launches into one event when you can get the press going big on two seperate iPod launches?

While it could conceivably be new dual-core Power Mac G5s, it seems a bit much for what is Apple's most consumer-shy product (new laptops or a new iMac are cause for a big bash and a front page story; new Power Macs are a note in the Technology section).

Either way, I can't wait.

It will be the 5G iPods. "And one more thing..." is sort of a nod to the nano press conference. As in, we didn't tell all our iPod news there.

Plus, the other day there were very reliable rumors posted on all the Apple fan sites about iPod revisions coming this month. 40GB and 80GB 1.5" drives (80 GB is a dual platter). Probably some kind of video functionality, but not what we expect. Probably similar to how the iPod Photo was at first (video out on the dock).

It's being held at the California Theater in San Jose and not the typical Moscone Center, and the invite does have theater curtains, so the implications are there for a video iPod. More so since it's unlikely to simply be computer bumps with the Intel transition forthcoming next year; PPC is passe. There are further claims to support the video iPod rumor mongering, but we'll have to wait and see. Given Apple's aggressive product rollouts of late, a video iPod wouldn't be entirely unreasonable at this point.

I want a price cut on Apple Displays + dual core dual processor PM.

Seems like the main focus of the event will definately be iPod and Movies though.

The red curtains implies movies to me.

iPod Video is coming. If the person who got the Nano info right is correct, it will also have wi-fi and stream video to TV via a new Airport Express.

I would expect any video iPod to have a widescreen type of screen, as given the increasing popularity of the widescreen video format, and that the device would be designed explicitly with video in mind, it wouldn't make sense for it to be limited to the more standardized squared screens the current iPods have which is used just for displaying photos and interface menus. There's always that possibility, especially as a first-generation product and if costs take a priority, but Apple has been really pushing the video frontier this past year with H.264, ACD upgrades, HD integration across their production suites, and so on, so I'd expect Jobs, Ives, and co. to have the sense to make it wide.

IF this thing exists.

Apple planning launch of video iPod
The release of the iPod video is expected to be accompanied by a "major update" to Apple's iTunes music store that will include a significant number of music videos and other short video content.

Please, please let it come out with short films as well as music video! Preferably that new Pixar short!

on the other hand, I didn't think Apple would just add video function onto the iPod and call it a video iPod. I expected them to redesign from ground up for viewing video, it wouldn't be that nice on the current design.

Somehow I doubt they'll release One Man Band online nearly 9 months before it appears in theaters in front of Cars.

Short films are very, very welcome though. I would absolutely die to see a shorts market pick up in the US.

If they really announce an entirely new iPod (video, or even just a standard 5G), then they're pure evil. The Nano JUST came out, and a LOT of people bought it just because it was Apple's cool new thing. If they release another new iPod only a month later? Well, I'm sure those same people will still buy it, but they won't be happy!

Not likely, really. There's probably some overlap there, but most people that bought the Nano would've likely bought it for its size and existing abilities, namely music and/or photo viewing. Any new video iPod will likely be substantially bigger and more expensive, likely replacing the current regular iPod line, which is currently priced at $299 and $399 for 20GB and 60GB respectively.

Much like their computer hardware, the iPod line has diverged into multiple sub-brands, and it wouldn't be, nor should it be, surprising if Apple began revising the lines in waves. Point in case, if you just bought the latest iBook and Apple went out and updated their PowerBooks next month, it really shouldn't effect your purchase.

EDIT: For shits n' giggles:

Its thicker and wider than the traditional iPod.

Protected from the onslaught will be Sony's PSP. This device has the advantage of being both a video player and games machine. It also has access to numerous third party video's and software.

Sophie Lo, research analyst at IDC said "The video iPod will expand the market. At the moment, portable video players are a very niche product. Apart from Apple, companies like Creative will benefit from the release of a video iPod. It will hurt their (Creative's) market share but they will have a smaller piece of a bigger pie rather than a larger piece of a smaller pie."

According to Apple Insider The release of the iPod video is expected to be accompanied by a "major update" to Apple's iTunes music store that will include a significant number of music videos and other short video content. Apple, which had been updating the "Music Video" segment of its iTunes download service on a regular basis, stopped posting new music video content last month, leading to speculation that a major content update was brewing.

Sources have also recently reported sightings of a new Apple wireless device, which is similar to Apple's AirPort Express wireless base station, but also includes a video out option. However, it's unclear if the long-rumored device will coincide with the introduction of a video capable iPod.

Apple recently introduced an ultra-thin version of its iPod called the iPod nano. According to well-placed sources, the company has modeled to sell 3 million of the players each month during the holiday shopping season.

On negative publicity surrounding the recent launch of from the iPod Nano, analyst Lo said, "How successful the new iPod is depends on how they market it, and on the availability of content. I don't see the iPod Nano as being an issue."

Invitations to the launch of the device have already been sent to key media outlets with Apple set to spend the next few days spruiking the launch.

On Tuesday the iPod maker began distributing invitations to analysts and members of the media for a special event scheduled for 10:00 a.m. October 12 at the California Theater in San Jose. The invitations simply read: "One more thing..." In recent years, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs has used the phrase "One more thing..." to indicate a surprise product announcement towards the end of his keynote presentations.

In the invitations themselves, Apple provided no hints as to what announcements it plans to make. However, recent information suggests that Apple will introduce its iPod with video capabilities. The special event will be the second held by Apple in less than five weeks. On September 7th the iPod maker dazzled the media with the introduction of its ultra-thin iPod nano.

Not sure I believe that. I can't see it being bigger than a standard iPod, unless there's a high-end movie-focused iPod.

EDIT: I think video-out would be a nice little app, though, especially for proper TV/movies.

you can't tell by the picture that it is bigger though. if it is the nano's clickwheel for example, that would make it about as wide as the existing ipod (little wider than the nano). and it wouldn't be that much longer than the ipod. remember, those shots supposedly aren't clickwheels of the same size as the regular ipod.

though I don't like the 90 degree rotation of the clickwheel. :(

It's not the size of the clickwheel but the general proportion which makes it look bigger.

The design also isn't ideal, because it's uneven to hold and the clickwheel is a monstrous waste of space.

That screen comes nowhere close to PSP's.
you don't know that. we know nothing about the actual screen (contrast ratio, resolution, etc). I would say the quality of the photo/nano screen is very comparable to the PSP aside from resolution.

however the PSP also doesn't have 80GB of space for storage. it's nice to hold 2-3 hours of video on a PSP depending on if you have a 1GB or 2GB mem stick. but that is nothing compared to an 80GB drive. can we say multiple seasons?

An 80GB video player with all my music on it would change my life...

I want this to be true so bad... I love my PSP, but it is a games machine with limited storage for multimedia.

This would be a true multimedia machine. My photos, my music, and my videos always with me would make my 1hr train commute the greatest hour of my day.

I just want the wi-fi thing to be true.

Streaming music and video from your iPod wirelessly to any TV or stereo connected to an Airport Express would be such a nice set-up.

While the October 12 event will disappoint Apple watchers eager to see the fruits of Apple's labor on its fifth-generation iPod, it has become apparent that Apple wants to avoid detracting attention from the new iPod nano, which carries high margins and which Apple expects might sell up to 10 million units this holiday quarter. While full-size iPod sales have been depressed for the better part of the year, especially in capacities beyond 20GB, Apple's bigger priority at this time is halting the skid in both Power Mac and PowerBook sales.

this takes me back to the music event with everyone (including thinksecret) saying that it would just be the moto rokr. everyone said nothing else (specifically video ipod) would be shown. then they unvieled the nano.

I can't believe they would make a huge deal out of just a computer bump or even the intel migration. this is something bigger.. especially with the "One more thing..." tagline.. almost like they are feeding the expectations. I doubt apple would do that for a speed bump.

Neither can I, but ThinkSecret's record is in general pretty bloody awesome.

AppleInsider on the other hand says that they're producing video iPods right now to ramp up for launch, so we'll soon know who's right :-)

thinksecret wasn't 100% about the music event. they debunked the video ipod (correct) nut also debunked the nano (incorrect).

we'll see. I just don't believe they would make this kind of fanfare for speed bumps (as i already said)

Hmm. Can Sony get owned by Nintendo and Apple in the same month? Maybe Microsoft will also unveil Halo 3 befor the month is over.

It's new Powerbooks.

Intel Powerbooks? Or do you think they'll be bringing out more G4s?

Frankly, if they'd drop the prices of the current line of Powerbooks by a fair amount, I'd be all over them. The top of the line 17" is probably worth about half of Apple's asking price. I want an Apple laptop, but I'm not paying top dollar for outdated technology. I could get a spanking tablet for that price, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a significant Powerbook price drop in the near future.

It really is not. Especially the one on Nano that has that has that slight bluish tinge. Their color reproduction is weaker, backlight lower and they are 16bit color screens. They should really put some better screen if they come out with video ipod.

Some people are speculating it's a tablet PB with a touch screen so that you can use INKWELL!

Other people think it's Intel PB's early. Can't wait till next week.

Thats awesome.

I was so close to buying one, have been holding out for so long. I have a feeling I'm gonna jump on one as soon as the new versions are released.

If it's Intel PB's early, I am going to have a very, very hard time not spending a bit on my bonus on one.

If its early Intel Powerbooks, put me down for one - overnight shipping.

I would, however, suspect that they would release OSx86 before launching hardware that depended on it.
