One of the most annoying things in gaming. A lot of you wouldn't get it.

A lot of you wouldn't get it because english is your first language. But here it is

My selected language in the game is english, my language on steam is english, my OS language is english. Stop with this umshalt, leertaste bullshit.

Thanks

I get this too when I try to play some games in Japanese. Have Steam set to Japanese, have my OS set to Japanese, the game supports Japanese (text and audio), and still the game is like "you're playing from the US, so you probably want English, huh?"

A VPN fixes this.

It's not just games. A lot of websites are designed under the assumptions that nobody could possibly understand more than one language.

Youtube is by far the worst offender when it comes to this shit. I'm perfectly capable of reading and understanding English, but Youtube insists on translating video titles and even the actual audio (using shitty AI-dubbing) into my native language. If I set my location to an English-speaking country and my language to English, the reverse will happen instead: content in any of the other languages I speak gets translated/dubbed into English. It's utterly infuriating.

youtube does not do that for me, and i have my real location set as the region which often i cant do and have to put US in order to have things in the language i selected.

But you're right that plenty of things do this. I could write a book about my frustrations with microsoft over the years.

Even in consoles, some games lock your language to the language of the console itself. When i got my ps4 with spider-man, i set up my console in portuguese, and when i started the game, i was forced into the portuguese dub, without any choice to change it ingame. I had to change the entire language of the console to english.

I really hated that. Thankfully i cant remember any other game doing it, but tbh, since then, my ps4 and ps5 have only been in english.

who even calls it Umschalt Taste? I literally never heard any german speaker call it that.
I have always called it shift, ever since I was like 9 years old.

also, most keyboards don't even write it on the keys, they just have the up arrow symbol that is generally associated with the Shift key... so why the fuck do games not just have that icon there and have it be fully universal to begin with?

Exactly. And this game isnt even the worst example because at least it only says umschalt and leer. There are games that add the -taste to those keybinds. Umschalttaste, eingabetaste, leertaste.

It is so beyond me how things have a language select option, but then in a lot of cases just give you the language of your region instead. If i eanted that language i would have selected that language when you asked me to select a language.

Im forced to have my region as US in so many places like search engines because otherwise they'll be like oh here is the german wiki article to something you searched in english and on top of that doesnt even have the same word in german. We went out of our way to translate your search in the background to give you the link in the language you havent selected, you're welcome /s fuck off.
The xbox app was also notorious for showing my german stuff if i had my actual region selected. But changing the region should solve all my problems right? Wrong. Now i want to buy something and it says oh we're sorry but we wont accept your credit card.. so i always had to change my region every time i wanted to huy something and then change it back to have the language i want.

But why do you want to play it in English instead of your mother language?
Genuine curiosity.
Have you heard about people who live in other countries? There you go. German is not my first language just because i live in switzerland. And even if it was, i would still prefer english, for many reasons.

Explain this to me like I'm German

Ok, also,

I hope that helped.:messenger_peace:

YES. Age of Empires IV uses my native language and it makes it unplayable for me.
