Only two controller ports is the best because....

....it seems that if they put 4 controller ports on any console they will not realese a multitap( like GC, DC and Xbox)

And why would I need a multitap if it has 4 ports from start, you ask?

Beacuse it is not enough! Some of the most fun I had with gaming has been with two multitaps on ps1 and ps2.

Micro machines v3 on ps1 was so much fun with eight peolpe! And all the sport games, like pro evo is great. In NHL and NBA game you can a whole team and not change players( 5 players with one multitap) and that is not possible with other consoles.

Now it seems that some games don´t make more than a 4 player version (like mashed) just because only ps2 support it.

So I am afraid for the next generation, if sony listen to all complains about lack of controller ports and make 4 ports, do you think their is a possibillity they make a multitap anyway? I will be sad if not.....

Oh please the existence of 4 controller ports does NOTHING to prevent a multi-tap from being released.

Worst argument ever.

Goldeneye should have told Sony that 4 controller ports was a good idea.

Halo made the same statement.

I doubt Sony even cares that people play 4-player multiplayer games.

It's all about online, baby.

On a more serious note, I have to say that I don't like the idea of "two controller ports are better because then i can buy two multitaps and seven controllers."

You're right. It's better.

Yeah in a way it is. And in a other way it is not...

Football or micro machines on one screen have a certain bit of charm and unmatched fun I think.

I want both alternatives

How about no controller ports at all, just a receiver which up to 16 controllers can send their signal to?

"We're Sony. We don't care. It'll still sell."

What about the idea of one controller port because then I can buy four 3-port multitaps and 8 controllers?

Well, history has proven me right eh?

Of course it does not technically prevent a multitap to be realesed, but no one seems to think their is big enough market for it. I´l bet that if ps2 had 4 ports we would NEVER have seen a multitap for it.

Oh so your entire argument is a hypothetical one? That sucks mang.

hypothetical? dreamcast, gamecube and xbox are not hypothetical examples

And ps1, ps2 and Saturn for examples the other way around, too. What else do you need? I

I entered the thread to suggest the same. Wireless controllers should become the standard, so why not an internal receiver for multiple signals?

And this could mean an even sexier console design. :)

Hopefully next gen systems will have bluetooth and ability to conect with as many controllers/peripherals as the game requires.

Controller ports are SO 20th century...

Actually, I recall from GameCube's E3 debut that the Tiberon guys were chatting about Nintendo considering releasing an 8-player multitap (possibly wavebird-based), and they were thinking of supporting 8 simultaneous players in one game of Madden.

But then Nintendo remembered that none of want to play with more than 4 people at once, and used that to help shape their strategy to lose marketshare as quickly as possible.

*tear*

I thought that was an intelligent thread by someone who would have finally realised that 4 controller ports is useless because more than 2 player splitscreen sucks.
More than 2 players = go LAN or online.

Next gen processing power + Hi def TV (almost garaunteed to be 40 inches or larger) = better splitscreen experience.

Besides, I never had a problem with the chop fest that was 4 player PD even on a crap 27 inch TV.

Who has talked about splitscreen? My examples of great games with more than 4 players is not splitscreen games.....

Have you never played Bomberman (Saturn version supports 10 players in one single screen) Micro machines or any sport game?????

$10 says PS3 will have only two controller ports.

I'll add the 10 into the pot, but also had another 20 and bet you the controller will be exactly the same....only in a more stylish, white color, this time around.

I know there is games that cool with 4 players. And especially BombermanS.
What i meant to say is that it's a minority. And if i was making a console, maybe i would decide not to put 4 controller ports and simplify my motherboard design and maybe getting my costs a little lower. I would produce a multi-tap as an extra options that you buy if you really need to for those couple of games. It think it's understandable if futur consoles does not support 4 controller ports. If it saves me even just 20$ on the price of the hardware i'm all for it.

I doubt it'd save you 20 dollars. Hell, I doubt it'd save you 2 dollars.
