Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy (Vita) launches on June 9 (USA), June 5 (EU)

Hey, so, eventually I was able to bring up a dungeon map with square button... not sure how that happened, since in the first two dungeons the square button did nothing, but this greatly mitigates my frustration with the game. I still hate the fact that I dragged around three useless characters for several hours, but this definitely seems to be in the school of "the first few hours are horrible and then it turns pretty good" design. I told you I'd give it a fair shake.

I'll just be happy if the maps don't disintegrate after you look at them like they do in Elminage.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it a bit more.

I don't really remember in operation abyss, but I remember in Generation xth they did, but you could look at them more than once and inventory wasn't a problem so...it was kinda like class of heroes, til you get acces to omega maps which can display any map in the game...

There are some areas where you can't view the map and need an item to view it, but that's only a few floors of one dungeon late in the game if I remember. Normally you can view the map at any time.

And that's why I'm the EXP kind of guy that digs EO games every now and then, instead of the other way around.

Yes! I can handle disintegrating maps on a certain dungeon. I agree with EXP>EO as well, Shizuka.
Speaking of EO, not to get too far off-topic, but I was hyped for PersonaQ. That game really rubs me the wrong way. It's not as fun as EO and not as fun as Persona. I guess I'm an outlier it seemed to be praised a lot and it fell flat for me.

It would be amazing if EXP just goes ahead and sets up a localization department and sends all their games westward. I would have no complaints.

they might do that in a couple of years. arc system works and level-5 both have us branches now, and even idea factory does these days. the old giants like sega and konami are retreating from the traditional space while smaller companies are kinda-sorta filling in (although asw still relies on aksys and level-5 still relies on bandai-namco and nintendo).

i doubt it would be the sort of thing that ifi, atlus, nisa, aksys, and xseed are though. to varying degrees, these companies have permanent staff in major departments. i think nisa is the most established with a production department, a localization department, and a multimedia department, meaning they do all the translation, editing, box designs, and trailers/websites themselves, where some other localization companies contract out a lot of that work or at least some of it. my assumption would be that localization would be contracted out from experience to some folks, that qa would be done overseas, and the game would be released digitally with maybe two or three guys in a small room are effectively the us branch of the company, handling actual game submissions, pr, and accounting.

Do not really see that as happening since having talked to Chikami-san he has stated that he is not interested in making such a large company as things change way too much when that happens. And they seem to be in a happy medium currently. As they prefer to focus on making games they want to, over focusing on making money, which dictates what kind of games get made.

Yes, but I would definitely file that kind of thing under the category of outdated gameplay design elements Jeremy was talking about in his preview.

His preview wasnt even that good to begin with and comes off more as a person who should not be writing on DRPGs.

Hope you people are happy. After seeing this thread so many times I caved and bought the Limited Edition from the NIS store.

Still not very far into Demon Gaze. I've only beaten the first dungeon boss so far.

Asides from the massive box you will have to find a place for, Id say its a fair price considering you get the artbook and soundtrack with it. Game should give you a decent amount of playtime too so you would most def get more for your money than say an action game that you beat within 7-10 hours lol.

Sorry if this question has been answered already.
Will the story be the same if I choose classic mode or will the be differences?

Story will be the same, the difference is that the game will use the original artstyle as found in the Generation Xth / Cross Blood series.

Its an odd way to think about it, but the original game system for the character portraits think of it like a paper doll and when you changed equipment it showed up on those character portraits. Could make some pretty stupid looking characters thanks to that. Though the art style of the classic mode is hit / miss with those who were not familiar with it.

Yeah, someone posted pic(s?) in that now locked Dungeon Travelers thread. Was kinda funny and surprising to see what you could do.

Finally put in my pre-order for the Op Abyss LE last night. Looking forward to diving in and getting the artbook.

Nice hope you will enjoy the title. Game is pretty straightforward so the only thing that folks will have to get used to will be more the item creation / breakdown. But once you do it a few times it should make sense.

Im not sure how many parts are in the classic mode though. As I didnt bother using it as went through the PC games on that mode. But for folks new to the series should find it amusing if they dont mind the older art style.

It allows for a lot more customization options when creating characters though.

Jeremy is one of a couple reviewers whose opinion I respect on games as our tastes in games and enthusiasm for what makes games great are similar.

I just saw the review and it feels weird. actually I am a bit annoyed, considering he takes etrian odyssey with high praise, saying it's the contemporary drpg and this game is 80's...(I am annoyed because I know it's not just him).it kinda remind me of people saying ''world of warcraft are the grand father of MMO'', I know it's not the same thing but it's just as stupid...

Etrian odyssey is a good serie, but to be honest I felt they are the one behind on certain point. (mainly gameplay/exploration speed), but we see they're trying to give option to speed up things with their latest title...

I didn't find the menu archaic, the crafting is really easy to use compared to the original game Generation xth:code hazard/breaker on pc or similar game Wizardry xth/Class of heroes 1.

there's a lot of complaint that I don't really understand... :S

In short, if you liked Demon gaze I am pretty sure you'll like this game. You'll maybe enjoy it even more than demon gaze.

I feel the same way about Etrian Odyssey. Generation Xth and Etrian Odyssey first released around the same time, about a year apart, and it's my opinion that a lot has been done with the Xth series to keep it up to date, whereas EO is the series that intentionally keeps things "old school".

Don't take these as knocks against EO, since they're just my opinions, but combat and exploration always feel slow, drawing in the map isn't fun for me, and the skill system can be annoying because it's hard to know which skills are worth getting first. That's why it's weird to me to call out Operation Abyss as being intentionally archaic. Especially when one of his main gripes is limited spell usage early on, when it's not really any different in EO with a tiny mana pools. I don't know what "niceties" EO has that Operation Abyss doesn't that would make him describe it as horrible and compare it to F2P mobile games.

I don't want to come off as some zealot defending Operation Abyss, but those preview impressions come off as misleading to me.

The F2P thing was honestly bizarre. It's especially odd because a I recall, Parish generally had a favorable opinion toward Class of Heroes 2.

I don't know how he feels about other games outside of what's in his OA preview, and I always hate questioning someone's opinions, but I just feel like the preview unfairly misrepresents the game in a negative way.

The way he namedrop Etrian Odyssey is similar to many reviewer namedropping MH when reviewing hunting action game; conveniently use a bigger (arguably better) game as comparison without knowing what they are talking about.

If anyone wants to buy the LE now's a good time. 5% or less in stock.

What preview/review are we talking about?

Edit: Found it.

Outside of DQ9 and I guess 10, what Dragon Quest games had A.I. driven companions? Based on what this guy is saying the game doesn't actually sound archaic.

This is why I stopped reading preview/reviews for dungeon crawlers especially from gaming sites. Most of the time if it's not an entry level title like EO it's too old to be enjoyable or something along those lines.
