The guy who normally names these things must be on the crapper.

FALLUJA, Iraq (CNN) -- U.S. and Iraqi forces have begun a push into Falluja as part of an all-out assault aimed at driving insurgents out of the city.

U.S. Army troops have crossed "the line of departure into the northeast sector of Falluja to secure a foothold in the city," military officials said.

The U.S. military is calling the assault Operation Phantom Fury.

CNN's Jane Arraf, embedded with U.S. troops on the northeast edge of the Falluja, said that the forces cut power to the city before the start of the assault.

Military officials told Arraf that the Army had achieved one of its initial goals --clearing a path through insurgent defenses in the northern part of the city. Insurgents had set up strings of homemade explosive devices capable of causing heavy damage.

This one is going to likely go down as the messiest engagement of the insurgency.

I was just about to bring the thread about the real meaning of "Phantom Menace" back up, since there was that whole brief exchange on the definition of Phantom. It's hardly a Phantom Fury when we're just going straight in and blowing stuff up.

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
Phantom:

1. Something apparently seen, heard, or sensed, but having no physical reality; a ghost or an apparition.
2. Something elusive or delusive.
2. An image that appears only in the mind; an illusion.
3. Something dreaded or despised.

Fury:

1. Violent anger; rage. See Synonyms at anger.
2. Violent, uncontrolled action; turbulence.
3. Furies Greek & Roman Mythology. The three terrible winged goddesses with serpentine hair, Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, who pursue and punish doers of unavenged crimes.
4. A woman regarded as angry or spiteful.

Conclusion:

We're sending women on their cycle to take Fallujah?

I mean what's more dreaded or despised than an angry/spiteful woman on the rag?

Fury
2. Violent, uncontrolled action;

I hope the soldiers aren't taking the operation's name to heart...

Who picks these names anyway? They've been awful during this entire Iraq ordeal. "Phantom Fury" certainly doesn't make me think of anything the 'good guys' should be doing.

I think the name is not bad-we're creating the grand illusion that the leveling of a city and the associated litany of war crimes and atrocities that goes along with that act is somehow just another battle in the global war against terror.

To that end it's starkly accurate and not propagandized much at all. That being said, it chills me to the bone and makes me want to curl up in a fetal position and tell myself that this can't be happnening.

yes, and Billy Zane was FANTASTIC in it.

I'm going to have to say that The Phantom was the worst comic book character ever. And a bad comic book character needs to have an even shittier movie.

Billy Zane was pretty good, yeah. But couldn't save the movie.

US and Iraqi forces have reached the center of Falluja. Iraqi commandos (and they really are commandos from the footage I've seen) are hitting sensitive targets like mosques and similar and they are true soldier. They are damn near fearless and busting into targets with force yet aren't anywhere near as equipped or prepared as US forces.

US dead has been officially listed as 10.

Let me guess, they found a note on the mantlepiece that said:

Dear Americans & American Puppets,

We knew you were coming & decided the option of "slipping away" would be advantagous to our aims, you really should consider the idea of not announcing such operations on CNN & other global media weeks before you undertake them, loose lips sink ships and all that,

Cookies & Milk in the fridge if you feel peckish (Best before 29th Oct 2004)

See you around,
