I have to give a good review to GIFBrewery. For $5 you can easily create animated GIFs from .mov and .mp4 files. .wmv takes a bit more work and doesn't work as well (you have to download another 3rd party .wmv player) but it's still very useable. The app has definitely improved in just a couple months. You can now add texts on the screen, although it doesn't look that great. Apparently the next version will improve the caption rendering a lot so that is encouraging.

It's really great for making simple GIFs though. You can even add filters, and you can use coloring techniques to reduce the amount of colors the GIF uses so that it's smaller in size. I really like using it, and I definitely recommend it. When the caption rendering gets improved it will be very very nice.

I do a bit of web development for work and I'm getting anxious to move away from Dreamweaver. At my old job we used Visual Studio, which was great but that's not on Mac. Is Coda pretty much the go-to web dev app on Mac these days? I've been eyeing it for months now and the reviews on the app store are generally positive, though now there's a few more showing up from people saying they're outgrowing it.

Anyone use it in conjunction with Diet Coda on iPad? Is that a good combination?

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Good lord, run as far away as possible from Dreamweaver.

I love Coda 2 it serves my needs nicely and I even have Diet Coda but I never use it since I already have two screens at my desk. And if you are just now outgrowing Dreamweaver, you have a long time to go with Coda.

I was fooling around in Hazel for a bit and I can't believe I didn't notice the "colored label" actions before. I made rules like it was christmas haha.

1. Basically any kind of repetitive moving files around that I do, is mapped to a specific color (ex. I usually download, open and move files to a specific folder multiple times a day, so that's yellow)
2. Everything I color blue will get imported into a new note in Evernote
3. Everything colored green will be moved to Dropbox
4. Also a bunch of rules about automatic coloring for everything that gets dropped in the Downloads folder (ex. pdfs will get blue), which is what transforms the above rules from pretty neat to "I can't help it, my files are moving on their own!" levels

I'm scared to start looking harder into applescripted rules because I'm afraid my computer will become sentient and destroy me

I've got a huge bunch of wallpapers and I'm often looking for ones with a specific color. Is there an app to automatically group images based on their dominant color (or other criteria like size, or location if available)?

For the longest time, I've been looking for an app that makes OS X an AirPlay receiver. It isn't my primary OS, and I like listening to music while on my computers. My PC is out of arm's reach, and iTunes home sharing hasn't been the most reliable.

Finally, I stumbled onto something that fits my need, and then some. Reflector ($12.99) is the app I've needed for the longest time. It uses OS X as a receiver for my iPod Touch, and I was able to also mirror my iPhone 4S screen at the same time.

"And then some" is the additional features it has of going full screen and being able to record the mirrored screen. I don't think I'll have any immediate use for it, but I'm sure something will come up. Little cool thing I can do is change the colour of the iPhone or iPad template to black or white.

Added it to the OP under Utilities.

On another note, I remember someone either on this thread, or the other Mac threads mentioning a specific free app that allows me to stream any video format from OS X/PC to an Apple TV. I've been trying to look for it, and nothing's coming up. Anybody have an idea of what it is?

Double post!

Doing a quick Google search, apparently, iPhoto can do it, if you have it.

There's also Pixa ($30), which may be more than what you're looking for in both functionality and price. It auto-tags photos by the dominant colour.

By the way, is Java safe to use yet? I have a piece of software I need to use that requires Java, but I guess OSX had disabled it due to that recent exploit.

I am looking for database app similar to MS Access.
I tried Filemaker, but it is not relational db.

Edit: web interface would be also ok

Pixa looks great, thank you very much.

Another question:
I will get my Mac mini in two weeks and I'd like to use it as a server via DDNS. For my personal use, I will just enable Remote Login and use Transmit or SSHFS to mount the SSH connection in the Finder.

But what if I wanted to share some bigger files with someone? What would be the easiest way? I could copy them to the Public folder, but this would get tedious soon. Anyone know an app which allows me to share any folder or file and specify individual passwords?
Would be great if I could manage all shared objects in one place.

edit: OS X Server seems to be pretty nice. But it's not possible to simply set a password for a share point.. a user or group has to be specified.

My app of choice for reading manga. Opens in full screen by default and can go to next archive file after last page of current (which was the feature I was looking for most as I neither want to associate .zip and .rar with a viewer, nor wanted to open every single file via the contextual menu).

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that powerpoint projects created on Mac don't transfer 100% to PC if they are effects heavy, right?

I have to make a powerpoint featuring lots of effects and images, and I'm tired of having to go to my desktop to work on it. If I were to buy the Mac version of office and transfer the Powerpoint, I'm pretty confident that it would not be a perfect transfer and shit would be messed up.

It should be almost 1:1 when you make a PowerPoint in Office 2011 transfer that to Office for Windows (07, 10, 13).

Why would that happen? I have never had any issues, but I don't go crazy with effects either.

If anyone's interested, you can try the beta of the upcoming 2.2 update, which includes better caption rendering at http://www.helloresolven.com/betas/gifbrewery/.

Okay, thanks. I've just been burned from various times trying my powerpoint presentation on another version of Office or something and it not working correctly.

Small world. I emailed you recently about maybe making it faster to manually rewind the GIFs. I really love the app! :D

I hate the way iPhoto manages photos. Is there a better alternative? Preferably no more than $15 if it's not free.

Man the Picasa interface is pretty... rough. Has anyone tried Pixa as an alternative to iPhoto? $25 is a little more than I was hoping to spend though.

Jpeg Mini is kind of a scam. It doesn't preserve the exact JPG quality while lowering its size. If you compare the two images, larger quantization on jpg mini image is definitely visible.

Does anyone have any comments about the MacUpdate & MacLegion app bundles being offered now?

Is one a better deal than the other? Are they both good? Any of these apps not good? I don't have any of these apps so I am curious.

Unless you really need those specific apps, I wouldn't bother. There are free and/or cheaper alternatives to some of the useful ones in there.

Get both if you don't already have any apps on the list. Parallels, Devon, Prizmo, iStat Menus, DiskAid, Toast, Launchbar are apps that are well reviewed and recommended by the community

Or just go to the individual developer websites and download trials of each app to evaluate if you want them or not before purchasing

Whaaaa-whatt? Not spoken like a true Mac User. I'd have wagered you already owned at least 3 apps from those bundles. ;)

I'm really disappointed. I discovered today that BioShock (The original) is available for OS X, but it's only on the App Store and not Steam. Why is it not on Steam? Infinite is going to be coming out for Mac in the Summer too and I bet it'll only be the App Store as well. Is there a reason the company hasn't put it on Steam? I'd much rather buy it on Steam and get a good sale. MAS never has great sales like Steam does.

Can anyone recommend alternative to Itunes please? There was this great music player on Windows called MediaMonkey which allowed mp3 id tagging. Meaning all the songs I had in my MediaMonkey library, when I edited them in MediaMonkey it would automatically change the file ID3 tags of that mp3 without me going into the actual folder, finding the mp3 etc or downloading an external ID3 tagger.
This in essence meant I had a music player which could organize my library all in one!
Anyone know a similar program for macs?
or will I have to resort using MediaMonkey through wineskin type of stuff...??

Uh, iTunes edits ID3 tags. Right click or ctrl+click a song, then Get Info.
