OS X Apps |OT| Tame the cougar

whaaat... How did I not know this till now?! thanks guys. so 100% when I make an edit in ITunes it will also edit the original file?

Yes. iTunes also has its own database, and exports that to .xml for other apps to use, but the tags are put in the file header for compatible file formats (.mp3, .aac, etc).

Ah, I see.

That's what I was hoping iTunes could do, and I know that TuneUp does that, among others. It's what I liked about Windows Media Player, but half the time, it got the tag wrong.

My library isn't cluttered, but I don't like how I have them tagged. :lol

Is their a user-friendly app to manage audio and subtitle tracks of videos (of any file type)? Currently, I would only like to set the default audio track, but adding/removing tracks would certainly be useful sometime.
I hope I don't have to convert all my videos using Handbrake or something?

Does anyone use Coda 2? I am getting back into html/css coding and currently have textwrangler for a lightweight program. I heard that coda 2 is good and looked up some reviews, but the price tag is making me hesitate in jumping in.

I have Coda 2 - it's a great html/css/javascript/php ide. It has some code completion, is quite snappy, etc.

The preview window is quite good also and really shows how a site will look in a real browser.

It allows you to create a 'site', tell it the site's remote server (supports FTP, SFTP, WebDAV and Amazon S3), tell it the local file system location, etc. You also can setup version control for the site and the database connection to get some more functionality out of Coda 2.

All that being said, in the end Coda 2 is still just a glorified text editor with some added features built in to make web development/deployment easier. I still find myself tending to use the TextMate 2 alpha version more often then Coda 2. I think TextMate 2 is probably my favorite text editor currently on OS X.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

I use Coda2 and love it, but if the price is a factor you may want to check out CodeKit, it is only $25.

And actually both Coda 2 and CodeKit have demos available so give them both a shot and see which you like.

Great thanks for all the feedback guys! I will try out the demos soon once I get into the swing of things and make a decision then!

1Password is 50% off for a limited time. Just $25 now for both the MAS and website version.

I recommend purchasing from the MAS: http://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/12365/mac-app-store-vs-website-features

1Password 3.8 (from our website) and 1Password 3.9 (from the Mac App Store) are essentially identical. The very slight differences are pretty much just related to application sandboxing which, again, shouldn't make any practical difference in daily use.

We do have a detailed list of the specific changes, though, if you are interested in the geeky details.

I don't think I can stress it enough that there really isn't enough of a difference to make any appreciable difference. Purchase wherever works best for you.

Additionally, if, for some reason, you need to use 1Password 3.8 after purchasing 1Password 3.9 on the Mac App Store, you can email us your MAS receipt and we can create a 3.8 license key for you. The reverse is not possible since Apple doesn't allow any developer to transfer a license into the App Store, so in that regard you may get more flexibility from purchasing on the Mac App Store.

I already own 3.x. I got it from a MacUpdate bundle 2 years ago. Which basically means I have to pay full price for 4. Just to get iCloud support. Maybe a deal will come along for 4 in a year or so.

Does the MAS version have any drawbacks due to being sandboxed? I avoid the MAS whenever I can if I know there's a limitation because of that stupid system.

I think the only limitation is that if you use Dropbox to sync your passwords that you have can only store the pw file in the default Dropbox location instead of storing it in a custom folder. I'm not sure I explained that well.

Why does BetterTouchTool no longer have support for "Back" and "Forward" for gestures? As in, back/forward in Safari/web browsing or even in Finder to move back and forward through folders.

I need this!!! :(

Can’t you just set BTT to use the keyboard shortcuts cmd-[ and cmd-] ?

those are back/fwd for safari and finder.

is gimp still really the best image editor? it's so janky.

don't need anything too fancy, just something to do simple mockups n' stuff.
at minimum, i need something akin to ms paint. something on the level of paint.net would be just perfect.

Anyone else have problems with Better Touch Tool randomly not working? I have it set to start up with computer but sometimes it

1. Doesn't start up
2. Starts up but doesn't function (i.e. I can open the BTT app but none of my gestures will work) so I have to quit then re-open it
3. Starts up but doesn't function AND quitting/restarting app doesn't work (I will have to restart computer in this case).

Sublime Text. Unlimited Free trial.

Take it with you on Windows or Linux if you want. It's all you'll ever need.

Also, CodeKit is more of an automator, not really a text editor. Great to use with any text editor, but at the same time not really worth the money!

Does anyone know of a good bookmark manager?

I'm starting to get annoyed with my bookmark situation, so I'm thinking a full app might be able to fix it. Currently it's just a mess of a "temp" folder, Evernote, and a bunch of tabs open that I don't touch for weeks.
Chrome integration will be nice, but I'm open to anything. Really just looking for a graceful solution.

I actually used it some time ago for the multi-browser sync, but fell out of it quickly. My bookmarks just got even messier.

For now I'm basically delegating to 100% Evernote bookmarking, which hurts. Delish looks nice but it's wayyyyy too expensive for what it is.

So Coversutra, which I've adored for a long long time, is ceasing support.

Anyone have any good iTunes cover art/shortcut/last.fm apps?

If anyone is looking for a good free Twitter app with advanced features like mute lists etc, the current version of YoruFukurou (Night Owl) is very nifty. A lot of features and customization options and from my time with it the best free alternative I have used so far.

Took me a bit to realize that changing font size was tied to the default system shortcut (cmd+ and cmd-), and at first it went over my head that Growl notifications would directly use Notification Center if Growl is unavailable, but it's all good now.

Better Rename 9, also known as A Better Finder Rename 9 is currently 95% off on the Mac App Store ($0.99 instead of $19.99).

That's a fantastic price. I have Name Mangler already, but anyone who has cursed and sworn at having to rename a bunch of files to fit a new, different pattern and not wanted to write a shell script should look into it.

Man, Airmail is the best dedicated e-mail client I've ever used. I didn't even like Mail, Sparrow, Mailplane or Unibox, but Airmail works. It has just the right amount of features vs. clarity and actually looks like what an OS X app should look like in 2014. Bye bye, in-browser Gmail interface.

Interesting. Does this use/sync gmail tags, or are the tags just used within this program?

My main issue with Mailbox is that it does not use gmail's tags, it makes it's own. Have they changed that?

I don´t know if it has been mentioned before but Readkit Is the best RSS reader by far. I love it and I use it on a daily basis.

EDIT: Airmail is a fantastic e-mail client Computer. I use it too and I can´t go back either.

Once Google bought Sparrow It was time to find a new email client and Airmail is by far the best one out there. I've been using it for months now. I am running into some minor bugs, but they come out with new versions quick enough and there is the beta branch as well.

I also use Readkit but since I'm always reading stuff on my browser (Chrome or Firefox) and I have limited screen space I often find it more convenient to just open my Feedly bookmark. Too bad because Readkit is actually well-made.

Does anyone know if Parallels licenses are transferable? I don't want to buy a license for my 2008 MacBook if I can't transfer it to my inevitable 2014/2015/2016 MacBook.

Doesn't matter because Parallels finds an excuse to charge for each new update every year.

Besides I prefer VMware because it doesn't fuck up your machine

Parallels Desktop for Mac licensing policy said:
The Parallels End User License Agreement states that you may use one copy of the Software activated by a license key on a single instance owned, leased, or otherwise controlled by you.

http://kb.parallels.com/en/112971

They explicitly confirm in their support forum that one can indeed transfer a license to another Mac, if Parallels is uninstalled (and deactivated) on the old Mac: 1, 2

I'm going to wait until the next release of OSX to see if they can salvage the disaster that Mail has become. If it still sucks balls when working with Exchange sources, then I may pick up Airmail.

Of course it is. You'll be fine transferring. I never uninstall the old one anyway. (I always set up a new machine by restoring from a clone of my old one anyway.) While they ask you to uninstall from the old machine first, I don't think there's any sort of check in place at all. I've had it installed on two machines at once and had no problems.

Citation needed. Parallels is amazing.
