OS X El Capitan [OT]

Does the split view thing work like Windows? I have no idea how to use it...

EDIT: So apparently you click and hold on the green maximize button and drag it but that doesn't seem to be working.

EDIT 2: Never mind I got it to work. I forgot that I disabled "Displays have separate Spaces" in the Mission Control settings.

Yeah, kind of miss the brushed metal there too.

I bet in 5 years things will come back around and we'll be leaving flatland and heading for more pop-ey interfaces, just like they once were. Then people will tire of that and we'll come full circle again.

that picture makes my skin crawl.

Something happened this morning when importing the most recent pictures I took with my iPhone 6S. The Photos app no longer recognizes live photos. The live photo option is grayed out.

I verified on my iPhone the live photos are still live.

Sounds perfectly reasonable. You're still gonna have to keep your gmail for YouTube though, right?
Has iCloud mail been perfectly reliable? It's great that it supports Push on iOS. On OSX I think I have Mail poll my gmail every minute so it's almost as fast as Push. What's iCloud spam filtering like?

I'm just worried that Apple will change their email system again down the line. In the time I've had my Gmail, I've also had a Mac.co

I am going to have to keep it for Youtube, yes. I'm not shutting my gmail down. For the moment I'm forwarding all my gmail to my icloud to help with moving all my stuff over, then I'll keep it around for my AppleID/Google Wallet/Youtube/various other things. I have no idea what iCloud spam filtering is like, I guess we'll find out!

It's actually not a problem if Apple changes their mail system again, as far as I know if you had a @mac address, when they switched to @me and then to @icloud, it's all the same. For example, my email @me and @icloud goes to the same account, regardless of which one you actually send the message to. If i had had an @mac account, that would be there as well

Nonsensical lines and calling the same thing with two different names (I don't even know why they changed that, it was right in Yosemite). Come on, Apple. Translators are not that expensive.

To be fair, the "library means bookstore" thing will never not trip me up with romance languages :)

My Apple ID is a @mac.com address and any email to it bounces (probably because I let my subscription lapse before the transition to @me.com) and while I can change the primary email for it, I can't change the account name. :( I don't know if this will cause any problems for me eventually.

I remember the first time I saw the Aqua GUI.

My jaw was literally on the floor. It looked so incredibly good at the time...

I have to admit, I still have to get used to the new flat look.

I think Windows does it better.

Something is very off about the way everythings color composited after Yosemite, imo...

I remember when he revealed Aqua, that was pretty special at the time. "Looks so good, you just want to lick it"

Found something too:

German for "Fullscreen mode not available". But the correct word would be "Vollbildmodus". "Vollbildmus" isn't a real word.

AFAIK changing the primary email IS changing the account name

Why does their email domain matter? I've had apple email since .Mac and it still works. They have aliases and maintain the old domains. I actually find it handy. I use mac.com as my Apple ID, me.com for personal email, and icloud.com for online accounts. They all point to same account, but it allows me to sort easily.

You can freely use any of the three Apple domains interchangeably to log in. I do, anyway. Just login using icloud.com instead.

So I guess it turns out you can no longer empty the trash securely or erase free space in Disk Utility. I've read that this isn't needed due to some Macs being only on flash memory, but what about us with fusion drives or regular old spinning plates?

diskutil in Terminal still has secureErase freespace so you can use it. I had problems doing so with system running but it worked booted from recovery partition.

As for secure empty trash there's still srm in Terminal as well.

Well, I heard that the update is well more stable than Yosemite was when launched. I'm still on Mavericks and I'm happy with it. Is the upgrade to El Capitan a good idea ?
I have some old software I don't want to lose, what's the matter about old software compatibility ?

That's not the issue, I have no problems logging in using @mac, @me or @icloud. The problem is emails to the @mac account bounce and that's my account name and changing the account name to my primary email does not work. Nobody at the Apple Store could figure it out the last time I went to them about it.

Much like the last OS, this OS still can't stream video from my new MBPr without hitching up all the time. Apple support claims its a problem with the router yet my iPod Touch uses the same router and streams perfectly.

Notes doesn't allow multiple windows of itself. So it won't let you do it. But you can put two of the same app next to each other if you can have multiple windows or documents open. Don't blame Split View. Blame Notes.

Actually I realized my issue is that you can only have two windows side by side. You can have two notes side by side but nothing else, I was trying to include Safari before. Bit useless when you have 27" real estate, but I suppose I'll just do notes on a regular desktop.

I still blame split view. I'm annoyed that you can't just have one window snap to the side. Lucky enough, Moom still works in El Captian.

System Prefs - Displays - little menu at the bottom for AirPlay Display. You mirror the whole desktop I believe.

can't reload individual tabs in Safari anymore?

fuckin bullshit

damn, i thought the El Capitan feature of streaming individual applications would work for NFL Redzone as well.

i think NFL is pulling some shenanigans to prevent me from doing this... will have to find a work around

I noticed that the current (3.6) Little Snitch kernel extension causes El Cap not to boot.

After I deleted it, the system booted just fine!

I hope there is an update soon.

Seriously, what the hell went wrong with the localizations?

In the Photos app, "Screenshots" somehow became "Vorschaubilder", which means "Preview Pictures".

When I first saw it introduced I thought it worked the opposite of how it does. I expected it worked like Windows 8 in that each side is a space itself rather than it being a single space with two apps. I thought you'd be able to have two apps and then swap each app out independently and even have the desktop as a space. I'm slightly disappointed since that would let me watch a video on the side while continuing work on the other side without being locked to a single app. But I still get a lot of use out of it anyway.

All my complaints would be solved with PIP though. Since I really only use it for videos. PIP would be infinitely more useful to me.

Yet they didn't bother to translate "Slo-Mo" into "Zeitlupe".

Interesting. Is there a translation for "screenshots" in the native language?

"Bildschirmfoto" is the most widely accepted one I'd say. It's also the German name of the screenshot tool in OS X.

I'm new to OS X and a former Windows and Linux user. I'm having a hard time with El Captain's window management system. The last version of OS X I used for more than five minutes was Mavericks so I've got a few questions and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Firstly, how do I change the fullscreen button to just maximize a window without fullscreening the application? I know if you hold the alt key and click it will simply maximize it, but is their a way to make this behavior default? I think this is how it functioned back in Mavericks, but I can't quite remember.

Secondly, when I click the maximize button it sometimes only maximizes vertically, but not horizontally. Is their a way to do both vertical and horizontal maxing?

Thirdly, does OS X have the snap feature where if I drag a window to a corner it expands to take up 1/4 of the screen. Or if I drag it to a side or the top it takes up 1/2 the screen?

Lastly, can I make the dock remain active on the desktop, hide when it's obstructing a window and when a window is maximized or full screened?

If someone could help me with those four things I'd really appreciate it. I picked though the settings, but couldn't find anything. I know my questions are about a mixture of features from Windows and Linux, but it's hard to let go when I've used them all my life and they feel so second nature.

There's already some new style content blockers in the Safari Extensions Gallery, i figured they'd be in the app store.

The Extensions Gallery shows both new iOS 9 style content blockers and the older JavaScript-based extensions. These are some of the new style ones:

Wipr
https://safari-extensions.apple.com/details/?id=com.giorgiocalderolla.wipr-desktop-4449XA862Y

Ka-Block!
https://safari-extensions.apple.com/details/?id=com.kablock.osx-UYW4V22L7E

Roadblock
https://safari-extensions.apple.com/details/?id=com.obiedcorner.roadblock-WE58FS6Q6B

NoThirdParty (blocks er'ything!)
https://safari-extensions.apple.com/details/?id=net.NoThirdParty-AK3JVSZ85V

The ones I've tried all seem to have a trouble with youtube videos that start with an ad. The content plays after about 10 seconds or not at all.
Also, can't find one with a whitelist.

Purify have stated they're working on a mac version.

I thought I downloaded and installed El Capitan, but I guess it was just 10.10.5 that I had updated to yet.

When I open the App Store now, it says El Capitan is "downloaded" but I don't see anywhere to install it?

Check your applications folder. There should be an "Install El Capitan" icon with an arrow and the OS X "X" branding.
