1. What's so great about Million Dollar Baby? By all accounts, it looks like a LifeTime movie on the big screen. 
2. I dunno about you guys, but seeing Don Cheadle, Jamie Foxx, and Leonardo DiCaprio in the "Best Actor" category makes me feel kinda strange. I remember when none of these guys acted worth a shit. :-|

1. Nice to see Jamie Foxx there for Collateral.
2. Odd to see Alan Alda there for The Aviator. Didn't he do the same thing he always does?
3. What's so great about Finding Neverland?
4. Very nice to see John Williams' nomination for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, as that's one of the most innovative scores he's ever done.
5. Aviator's nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay were expected, but:
a. Best Picture: The Aviator has four producers listed in the credits, and Academy rules say that only three producers can receive the Oscar. This is why Charles Evans is in court with Michael Mann right now, suing him because he claims Mann hijacked the project that he'd developed for twelve years. When The Aviator won a Golden Globe earlier this year, it led to Evans rumbling with a security guard who was instructed to bar him from participating in a photograph with the other producers. Bad karma for that.
b. Best Original Screenplay: John Logan had an absolutely ridiculous contract to write the screenplay for this movie--the producers couldn't demand a rewrite from Logan; Scorsese, Mann, and everybody else were forbidden to hire writers to rework Logan's submitted screenplay; and if Scorsese reworked the screenplay himself, he had to go uncredited. Moreover, Logan was supposed to use only public and multiple sources for material, but one of Hughes' biographers is alleging that at least some of the material for the screenplay came from his book, and nowhere else. Bad karma for that as well (putting aside the question of whether a screenwriter should have that much control over a film).
c. Best Director: see 5(b): who knows why Scorsese agreed to have his hands tied with that screenplay, but there it is. He deserves an Oscar at least once in his life, but I'd rather see it go to him for a film for which he has more creative control, not a "hired-gun" film. This may be the time, though.

I still can't figure out how Jamie Foxx's role in collateral can be classified as a supporting role, he had more sceentime and probably more lines than Cruise.

There aren't any real rules behind what defines a role as "supporting": a supporting role is pretty much whatever the studio says it is. He was probably pushed as a supporting actor in Collateral so he wouldn't have to compete against himself for his role in Ray.

Passion of the Christ is not a great movie, but it does deserve the Oscar for best makeup. The job they did on Jim Caviezel's body, especially his back, throughout the movie was amazing.
Jamie Foxx deserves both acting awards. He was spectacular in both roles.

Is there any doubt as to The Sea Inside taking Best Foreign Film? I'm really happy to see Clive Owen and Natalie Portman got recognized for the awesome job they did in Closer, they picked up the Golden Globes but they deserve the Oscar recognition too. It's too bad Before Sunset can't beat Sideways for Best Adapted Screenplay, but at least it got the nomination.

Am I the only one who's completely jaded to this whole process? Aside from a general distaste towards trying to determine which film is "better", I'm sickened by all the pagentry and bullshit that goes along with the Academy Awards. I'm all for honoring filmmakers and actors and whoever but does it really have to be such an overblown event? Ugh, maybe it's just not for me. I guess the awards are really more aimed at people who watch Entertainment Tonight and like to discuss all the "star" gossip. It just seems to me that the original idea for the Oscars now takes a backseat to entertainment and fashion.
I know I'm definitely in the minority and I'm sure no one wants me crapping on all the super fun Oscar hoopla but it gets more and more absurd every year. I'm honestly considering not watching this year. Ah, who am I kidding?

As for GITS2: it's origin is Japan, isn't it? Maybe that disqualified it from domestic best animated film. I dunno.

As per Animated Film, the real mystery is just how in the hell Shark Tale got in there in the first place. While there is little love for the Polar Express, it at least has its Effects to fall back on in the voters' minds, and it did, since it has 2 Technical nominations. You have to wonder if Dreamworks' celebrity marketing of the film may have paid off not only at the box office, but also with the academy. I can't think of another reason that it was picked over the better Animated Films, simply by reviews, such as Ghost in the Shell, Polar Express...hell, I think even the oft dissed Home on the Range ended up with better overall reviews than Shark Tale.

I completely ignore the red carpet bullshit and instead concentrate on seeing that people who put their neck on the line get rewarded for it. Every year it's the same deal - there are those who risked a great deal and finally get rewarded for their efforts and then there are those who are sorely overlooked.
The only thing I care about is that there really are people out there who sweat the small stuff and sometimes they get rewarded for sticking it out with an oscar nomination.

Why the hell is Tupac: Resurrection even eligible for Best Documentary? According to Box Office Mojo, it opened on November 14, 2003.....and left theaters on December 25, 2003. It wasn't even showing at all during the 2004 calendar year so why the hell is it nominated for Best 2004 Documentary? How is that fair to the other documentaries that were legitimately released in the past 12 months?
