Ignoring for a second the snubs in the major categories, what is with only three songs being nominated for original song (you can go through the awards on Oscar.com, just no list)? And they snubbed SPRINGSTEEN in the process. Don't get me wrong: I love those songs from Slumdog, but how strange!

Don't tell me Eastwood's song got nominated over SPRINGSTEEN?

I can't wait to hear /filmcast next week after this week's episode :lol

The real tragedy is that everyone doesn't have work off today for Jenkins Appreciation Day.

Have you seen The Visitor? Fantastic flick.

Really well deserved nomination, but Mickey better get his trophy.

Goddamn it. I haven't seen a single one of the nominees for best picture yet because none of them are out in Japanese theatres yet, none are on DVD/Blu-ray yet and I don't want to pirate them.

I am particularly looking forward to seeing Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire, though.

I really enjoyed Ratatouille, it was cute and funny and definitely well-done and entertaining.... but a masterpiece? Really?

Yes a masterpiece. It had a lot more going on than being cute. It's one of the more adult Pixar films, and by that I mean it's themes are for more mature people. It deals a lot with gray morals and it does not have a perfectly tidy ending, happy sure, but bittersweet. It deals with identity issues, accepting that you have faults and getting over yourself.

People should'nt prance around this thread saying others lack taste as if they are the all seeing authority on whats good or bad.

If you think other movies should win, fine, we're happy for you. I personally think TDK was the best movie of 2008. Doesnt make it so

my picks as i watch the video for noms:

- amy adams/viola davis (either one)
- heath ledger (hard not to give this to philip seymour hoffman though)
- no pick for best leading actress. wasn't wild about any of those that i've seen
- same for best actor. haven't seen several of the films though
- unimpressed with all the directors here, really. fincher certainly didn't do much with b.b., as much as i love him.
- martin mcdonough, in bruges.
- john patrick shanley, for doubt
- haven't seen any of the foreign nominations
- wall-e easily wins best animated feature
- the best picture nominations are a joke. a JOKE.

in general these just emphasized for me that this has been a very middling year for film, at least as far as my experience is concerned.

I really hope that Slum Dog doesn't win best picture. It was a poor man's City of God.
Best picture should go to The Wrestler in my opinion but seeing as that didn't get nominated....

Mickey Rourke should be a lock for best Actor.

This is why you include Wall-E in best film. It's competing with Bolt and Kung Fu Krap.

*sigh*

...and if TDK isn't going to get a nod then I guess nothing from the comic book realm will for a very long time.

....AND, if Slumdog Millionaire wins then I predict a GAF meltdown.

Maybe not, but it was the better film out of the current nominees. The only two films I would put close to it were Frost/Nixon and The Wrestler.

I'm pretty sure Milk is a much better film, actually.

I didn't even know Milk was out yet.

I guess of the nominations Slumdog should get it. Ask me Rourke easily gets best lead.

Where is Springsteen?

Not a lot of surprises, not big nominations for TDK, but who expected them ? :(

Almost every major prognosticator expected them.

And yes, there were a lot of surprises.

I don't. Aside from the performances which were great you could have inserted another time piece film and it would have fit in it's cookie cut shape. It wasn't a bad film though.

It sucks that Ledger is a lock for Best Supporting because of his death, IMO Michael Shannon and Josh Brolin are more deserving. Heath should've won for Brokeback Mountain.

Well, TDK won a couple of awards in the season, but I'm pretty sure that a lot of people expected it to get shafted in the Oscar nominations :(

I'll be rooting for Slumdog millionaire and The Wrestler, I supoose that Heath Ledger will win, but who knows at this moment.

And Penelope better not win her Oscar -_-

Well, I think he'd be a lock either way. Shannon was fantastic, but I don't think Brolin is even the Best Supporting Actor in Milk. I would've much preferred a Franco nomination.

Ugh, I was hoping the Dark Knight would get nominated for Best Picture just to take votes away from Slumdog. Now Slumdog is definitely going to win Best Picture. Yuck.

Everyone thought TDK was a lock because it picked up nominations from all the separate guilds... except from the SAG. In hindsight, the SAG makes up half the Academy, so I guess it shouldn't be too big of a a shock that it got screwed by the Oscars.

It's too bad they don't release the vote count, it would be interesting to see just how close TDK came to being nominated.

I also forgot Gran Torino has nothing.

Which is strange, because the general consensus was that if anything were to knock out The Dark Knight it would most likely be Gran Torino (with The Reader and Doubt being less likely). An Eastwood nomination was becoming very probable too.

The only thing that saddens me is that they nominated Ron fucking howard again. Seriously, the most banal director EVER.

I never expected TDK to get a BP nom, but surely Nolan deserved the director nom if Ron fucking Howard clinched it for the third/fourth time?

forget Dark Knight for a second (this just seals that we will never see a comic flick nominated for best picture) but how in the f*ck does The Reader get in over The Wrestler?

This is exactly what Ive predicted for TDK for months now - supporting for Heath, and a bunch of technical noms. While I cant predict box office for shit, I do much better with awards.

Not surprised that TDK didn't get nominated it was a great film, but really didn't deserve it.\ That and Oscar gave the fanboys their Oscar a few years ago with Return of the King.

Never expected Wall-E to get a nomination, but I really wanted it to.

I'm hoping Viola Davis can win Best Supporting Actress, but it's looking like Penelope Cruz is a lock with Winslet out of the picture. I'm pleasantly surprised to see Melissa Leo - I was expecting Sally Hawkins to be nommed definitely. I'm kind of shocked that Revolutionary Road was basically snubbed besides Michael Shannon... and The Reader has gotten so much love, wasn't expecting that at all....

Leonsito said:
Wow at the Best Director table, Nolan really got fucked by ... "The Reader" :(

Next Batman film to be set in Berlin in WWII, Batman kills Hitler.

Well with the way AMPAS works, the Holocaust angle will just be canceled out by the comic book one.

People are asking if TDK can't be nominated, how will any comic-based movie ever be? Then I remembered that the next X-Men spin off is supposed to be about Magneto!

Comic book fans are going to have a movie about a Holocaust survivor, this is a lock for best picture!

In case anyone wasn't already convinced, there's a wide, wide gap between movie-goers/movie critics and whoever it is that votes for the Academy Awards.

The Reader? Really? At least put something in there that actually got decent reviews. :/

For the record:

Actors - 1,243
Producers - 454
Executives - 440
Sound - 412
Writers - 396
Art Directors - 373
Directors - 374
Public Relations - 369
Members at Large - 254
Shorts/Feature Animation - 330
Visual Effects - 264
Music - 235
Editors - 223
Cinematographers - 195
Documentary - 141
Makeup - 116
Total Voting Members - 5829

That's why the guilds are the most important part of the precursor season.

Ill be the odd one to say i am thrilled Button received 13 nominations. Although, i only really see 4 as a lock for the movie, mostly the technical/art stuff. Still though, a lot of great work was done in that movie. I want to see it again to see if i like it better a second time.

I think it will be between Penn and Rourke for actor, and Slumbdog will probably get best picture.

I just want Kung Fu Panda to win. That was the best out of all of the other movies I've seen that were nominated.

I think Robert Downey Jr gets best supporting actor, because he was a dude disguised as a dude who was playing another dude.
