➻ BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

I thought the Theory score was beautiful, but I voted for my friend Alexandre Desplat [who is nominated in the category for both The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game] because I want him to win and, to be honest with you, I don't give a shit which movie he wins for. I texted a week-and-a-half ago and I said, "Okay, what do you feel is your strongest suit? Because I want to put some energy behind it." And he said, "I don't know." So I waited, and then when he won the BAFTA and a Grammy for Budapest, I wrote him back and said, "Well, dude, it's Budapest, baby!"

MY VOTE: The Grand Budapest Hotel

I laughed out loud at this. Sums up so much of what the Oscars are about. Every year I see people on the internet taking the results so very seriously, much more seriously than the majority of the voters. This is a great example of why we shouldn't.

The Oscars are what they are – industry awards voted on by thousands of people in the industry, most of whom probably have no particularly special level of taste. It's not especially different from something like the GAF GotY vote in that way. Why people would want to take the results of either very seriously, as anything other than a fun curiosity, I have no idea.

The opinions quoted in the OP don't even seem all that outlandish (though the racial stuff is pretty shitty), even if I might disagree. (I've only seen Inherent Vice at this point, which I liked a lot.)

I liked some movies more than others naturally, but altogether this got the be one of the most boring selections of Best Picture picks I've ever seen.

So, apparently in recent years the Academy has decided to supplement their army of retired housewives with your average YouTube commenter? Seriously, this is Ain't It Cool News talkback levels of stupid. "Brutally honest"? More like brutally stupid and borderline racist. These voters they quoted sound like immature, mainstream-slogging morons who all need good, firm slaps to the face. That "Chinese ****ing thing" quote for the animated category comes off as something a coomon, random drunk in a bar or a trailer park dwelling idiot would say when rambling about how they hate foreign movies. No wonder the Oscars are a neverending mess.
