Ouch, why does video playback in Vista stutters so much?

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
On my PC (3Ghz P4, GF6800) I could play just about any video in XP with no stuttering or frame skipping whatsoever, even in regular WMP, there was no need for any specialized optimized player. I could easily play 1080p WMV files, and 720p QT files

In Vista, even though the whole UI runs perfectly smooth, even smoother than XP I'd say - the video playback is anything but smooth. I have the latest Vista drivers from Nvidia but even DiVX videos of 640x350 resolution stutter quite a bit every now and then, and 720p videos are just terrible, no matter the format. I didn't try QT yet, all my observations are centered around WMP so far, with various codecs. Media Player Classic didn't fare any better btw.

Is this "normal" or should I look for better drivers and different video players?

As it is, Vista has rendered my computer half-useless. Not to mention various other weird issues, like the whole Itunes interface being slow as hell now, and some UI transitions while working in Flash being slow as *&%#.

I also have the same problem. I dont understand why it sucks so much. I also dont understand why WMP plays all my videos with strange lines and doubling or color problems when WMPclassic has no problems at all.

It's a video driver issue. Even the latest video drivers ain't perfect when it comes to video playback :-/ Just be glad you're not trying to watch a video with like an Intel GPU, heh. These issues will iron themselves out, but yes, they are annoying.

Early adoption FTL. Nvidia's drivers suck, and they don't even have 64-bit stuff available in anything other than beta. I had a lot of problems with drivers on one of the Vista RC builds, so I'm not looking forward to working with it until they fix the bugs and driver support. I won't be moving until at least SP1.

Oh, and Apple documentation on iTunes problems in Vista.

DAMN YOU INTEL!!!! I got a integrated intel graphics that they say they wont update the drivers for Vista which i find to be stupid. So i'm gonna have to live with this problem?

No problem here. AIW X1900 installed. Got prompted for the driver update. Downloaded and isntalled. Smooth as butter.

FYI...

Slickdeals.net has a thread discussing Vista Home Premium available to students, faculty, etc. for $66. I got mine last week though a similar deal but paid $89.
