Over 89 million units of Nintendo Switch have been sold in just 4 years and 4 months

Reckon it will outdo both PS4 and GB but suspect PS2 and DS will prove out of reach. Unless they come out with a pro that somehow still counts as just a Switch (which becomes less likely as years pass) or some sort of Dock innovation that extends the Switch's life...

Why is your graph different then?
Is not my graph, I got it from other thread.

It's different because Game Boy Color and Game Boy were diffrent portables. Even if it was BC and had a similar form factor and a similar hardware, GBC was more powerful, had exclusive games, and both had a generation long lifespan. So as happens with the other BC consoles and portables GBC is counted as a different device.

Some people combine GB and GBC into 'GB' as the one linked in the OP, but I think it isn't correct.

Amazing how memory works. I seem to recall people being cautiously optimistic about the Switch but that first page of that thread tells me I'm remembering another forum or something.

Manufacturer comparison (video game business only for Sony/Microsoft) Q1 2021 :

Revenue

PlayStation: €4,745 billion
Xbox: €3,137 billion
Nintendo: €2,486 billion

Profit

Nintendo: €923 million
PlayStation: €642 million
Xbox: Undisclosed

Pretty crazy, and well done Nintendo!

I like the concept of the Switch but I can't stand the controller and 720p is a little too low for my taste, so I don't consider myself the target audience (at least until Metroid Dread arrives), but of course I have one because my SO loves it.

At the end of this fiscal year it will be over 100 million easily

Strong line up with games like Mario party - pokemon - Metroid maybe it will accede wii life time sales

PS2 is safe imo, unless Nintendo dont bring out a new console for another 5 or 6 years, and it is Nintendo we are talking about here so that could happen i suppose lol.

PS4 slowed down a lot after ps5 release so it will probably happen somewhere in 2023
It slowed down because Sony stopped supply. It would have sold huge numbers throughout covid times if it had supply. The only positive is I sold my ps4 Pro when the ps5 launched for an insane price thanks to the massive demand. Ps5 was very cheap thanks to that trade in.

Switch is a great console. Love the flexibility it offers and different approaches to how you game. Excellent library of games too. It could very well end up being my favorite console of all time. I hope Nintendo continues with the hybrid format, it's the future for gaming imo.

Thank you for this! I fucking hate when people lump the GB and GBC together because they're a bunch of inbred morons. I mean, GBC was actually a bigger upgrade over GB hardware wise than the Wii was over the GameCube. In fact, Wii and GCN pretty much have the same exact hardware under the hood. So why don't these idiots lump GCN and Wii as the same console? Well fuck it, I'll be a dumbass as well and lump them together. From now on, the GameCube and Wii are the same console. Die mad about it.

BEAST

Will easily end up the number 1 selling console of the generation. Nintendo what Sony/Microsoft don't.

A price drop to $250 or heaven forbid $199 and that PS2 crown would look like slipping.

easy bronze medal. PS4 could catch a 2nd wind tho and give the Switch a run for its money for that final podium spot.

I got a Switch Lite recently because I needed a Super Metroid fix due to my post-Returnal depression and as an appetizer for Dread.

I haven't touched my PS5 since. It's just so cozy to play in bed and everything is ultra fast and simple. No bullshit. Got Pikmin 3 Deluxe as well and love it. Ingenious, cute, a breath of fresh air in the 4K Raytracing obsession world.

The Switch is an antidote to the specs wars and DF autistics. Just a pure game console with great games. It's all deserved, Nintendo.

I still think Wii could have sold so much more if Nintendo didn't drop it like a sack of shit. How the fuck did they justify stopping development on it years before Wii U even came out? Some serious mismanagement there.

Iwata deserves some serious credit for bringing in the Wii. He also deserves a lot of shit for allowing it to end with a whimper.

I could swear PS3 had passed 90 million, considering for how long it was on the market. Guess I remembered wrong.

PS2 is basically untouchable because the market has changed considerably. If I'm not mistaken, PS2 could still sell in countries where console prices have been prohibitive since the HD era began, and the Slim revision dropped in price to the point it was literally an impulse buy. Impossible to do those numbers without those two conditions, unless a place like China starts buying Switch in droves.

Still, expecting anything to reach PS2 numbers is unrealistic. 100-120 million in this day and age is a reasonable goal, and Switch is going to reach it pretty comfortably at this point unless something unthinkable happens.

Gaf predictions from 2020 are not aging very well.

Yep some crazy expectations there, only 9.1% of users think it will outsell 140 million
End of 2021 Switch should be around 105 million
With 25 million in 2022(Splatoon 3, Breath of the Wild Sequel, Open World Pokemon) that's 130 million
Just 20 million combined in 2023/2024/2025 will make Switch break 150 million

Not to mention the fact that PS2 had DVD playback. Like yeah, that's been a feature in consoles for 2 decades now and many gamers take it for granted, but it was revolutionary in 2000. You have to remember, back then, DVD players were a luxury item and ludicrously expensive. So here comes this machine that is not only way cheaper than most DVD players on the market at the time, but it can also play games. So it was a no brainer back in the day. It convinced a lot of non gamers and casual gamers (especially those with children) to make the purchase.

I genuinely believe that the PS2 is a huge part of the reason that DVD became the dominant format in the early-mid '00s. One is not complete without the other, essentially.

Kids rule this planet.
I bet there is stats showing that each day or maybe each hour or minute a new kid tries a Switch for the first time. The power of family friendly games. I barely touch any of the Switches we have in the house anymore, super disappointed in the console tbh, but the kids barely touch any other console.
