Overall, is the Xbox software library just...

... about right? :)

Some genres are missing some killer titles, possibly turning off some picky gamers, but for the most part, the platform has decent and consistent support. Almost a pity Microsoft is pulling the plug on it in favor of Xbox 360.

It's definitely a more Western-oriented console than the competition, but the way the industry is evolving these days, it isn't as bad as it would be if the Xbox was released 15 years ago.

A nice touch is how many multi-platform games tend to end up better on the Microsoft machine.

Well I'd say your GAF username was well chosen.

I tend to agree with you, but I'm not going to get into the big debate as to why.

Instead, I'll just grab some popcorn, sit back, and watch the spectacle that's about to unfold.

Nope, i'm not touching this one

I don't think its exclusives are all that astounding aside from a few. It gets the best version of most multiplatform titles, so that's really the biggest perk.

Yeah.

Take a look at this month. Lots of PS2 gamers plan to skip August as far as purchases go, but the Xbox has some must have titles.

Hey, I didn't say overrated nor underrated. :D

I took a moderate approach, spoke truth as far as I'm concerned and this could be a nice little topic to end the weekend with a bang.

As for the people refusing to share their thoughts, you know, this is a forum, ideas and opinions are meant to be heard and debated.

Like what?

I don't think this month has any "Must-Have" titles that are exclusive to any platform. Hell, it doesn't have any "Must-Have" titles that are multiplatform. The only remotely interesting or popular stuff is multiplatform (Madden, Darkwatch, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, maybe BeatDown or something).

Generic opinion.

It has to be compared with other "first efforts" if you ask me - A2600, NES, Master System, TG-16, 3D0, PSX. In that company, it definitely holds its own. It's an excellent start.

Yup. This is why I don't have an Xbox -- I never really felt like the machine had enough exclusive killer apps to justify my time and money, and I can live without the few extra bells and whistles that most multiplatform games receive on the system.

Yeps. I'm with this guy. It's about awesome if you don't own any other console, and certainly makes a great secondary one, but it'd never be my primary system, nor my preferred one.

MOTO GP 3

Stating the obvious...it's akward sometimes...

;)

I think it's the best sports console ever created. The only sports game I think is missing from it's line up is Smash Court.

I've liked it the best, but I think it has to do with online multiplayer support rather than any sort of generic definition of best software support. It's obviously better than GC and lesser to PS2 if pure diversity is the standard.

Well obiously it can't match the PS2 in library in sheer selection but the Xbox library often has the best 3rd party version to the game out there to me. Plus I love Western/European games like Enclave,Buffy,Ridick,PGR1 and 2,the Halo series. The Japanese support could be better but its certainly not too bad,but then again I try to be open minded by liking games from all areas of the globe. Still its good to see the Tecmo and Sega support from the Japanese market overall, that played part of the reason why I picked up an Xbox early on-though PGR and Halo were the reason reasons more than anything. Xbox Live pretty much enhances their sports, shooters, and racers far beyond what their console competitors are doing with them online too.

Many here have short memories-on the eve of the Xbox launch I remember a ton of folks within this very forum saying Microsoft were doomed the minute Halo stopped selling, many of these nay sayers were Nintendo advocates.

For me the next best library out there after the PS2 library is indeed the Xbox one-thats not too bad for a company that is pretty much a rookie in the console gaming market.

That sums it up for me as well.

Eh, to me the only worthwhile exclusive is Ninja Gaiden. I can see the fuss about online but I'm also a PC gamer so the draw isn't really there for me.

Just in reply to rookie console software libraries, in no way does the Xbox library eclipse the PSX library for quantity, quality, and variety of games. For a rookie console, the original Playstation has one of the greatest libraries of all time. The PSX had a better collection than the PS2 and at this point I still prefer the PS2's selection to that of the Xbox. That being said, the Xbox has become a viable platform and I'm sure they will improve their position this coming generation.

Compared to PS2, hell, even to GameCube, I think the Xbox most definitely lacks width in its library. Exclusivity wise it's also the weakest of the three. Japanese support is a contradiction in terms..

If not for Sega and modability, I would have seen little reason to get one.

Uh, if you take out the Halo series, what's left are some of my favorite games this generation. Don't get me wrong, I like Halo but I love Panzer Dragoon, JSRF, and KOTOR. Those games alone made the Xbox a worthwhile purchase for me. Throw in some Voodoo Vince, Gunvalkyrie, and Dead or Alive and I'm extremely happy. Halo is like the icing on the cake for me.

Couple Japanese RPGs, you mean? It's got a few pretty good western ones.

No I mean even with the western rpgs. The system has maybe what 6-8 rpgs total for a 4 year lifetime? And it's not like they're all high quality rpgs. Definitely the category the 360 needs to improve on the most.

The Xbox is my all time favorite console, and i've owned all of them, including the SMS and 32X.
Their exclusives are IMO better than what's found on the PS2, and i'm not talking about 'timed exclusives'. Ninja Gaiden, Halo, and KOTOR have provided me with more amusement than anything i own for the PS2.

Jet Set Radio Future sucked. :\

i found panzer dragoon orta to be a bit disappointing too. the sega games i was looking forward to play (otogi, jsrf, pdo) all disappointed me

the only games i really, really loved on the xbox are Halo 1/2 and Ninja Gaiden

Ok, I'll put the popcorn down and bite.

I was a Sony diehard gamer from 1996 until November 2002. I camped out to get a friggin PS2 at Best Buy on launch day in 2000. I loved everything Playstation. I've never really hated any console at all, I usually get around to buying all of them eventually when the prices drop. However, I thought Xbox was a big bloated piece of crap. I didn't know anybody that owned one. I had no desire to purchase one.

Then one night, just before Xbox Live launched in November 2002. I was poking around Gamestop and people in the store were talking about Xbox Live and how it was launching the next day. I went and looked at the demos. Played a little Ghost Recon and some other Live game I don't remember and decided to make an impulse buy. I had just gotten broadband the week before so I thought this would be the perfect thing to test it out. I bought a used Xbox, and a couple of Live games. Just a few months later in January 2003, I bought a 48" Widescreen Mitsubishi HDTV and a cheapo 5.1 surround system. I never really played my PS2 at all after that. None of the games were in DD 5.1. Very, very few of the games were in 480p and my TV didn't have a very good de-interlacer. Every PS2 game had that interlacing fuzz where it looks like someone has rubbed vaseline all over your screen and they just looked terrible compared to Xbox games in 480p. For the first time in my life I was a graphics whore. I guess shelling out 3k for a home theater setup will do that to you. You want to get the most out of it and utilize things that will take full advantage of it.

A lot of my friends felt the same way I did about Xbox. Hated it and had no use for it. Until they came over and played it on the home theater. Microsoft should have sent me a commission check that week because I sold about 12 Xboxes for them. The funny thing is, I didn't really miss the PS2 lineup of games at all. I didn't miss the JRPGs in the least bit. After Final Fantasy X, I approached burnout with them. I had been an avid JRPG gamer since the late 1980's. I think my first one was Dragon Warrior on NES. I felt the formula was stale and they were offering me nothing new. I quickly fell in love with Western style gaming. I thought it was fresh, new, and renewed my enthusiasm for gaming. Maybe some day I'll get tired of it and go back to Japanese style gaming, but not any time soon.

Xbox has a lot of decently good games, that are great for a good play through once and a while, but there isnt many games that i absolutly love and can only get on my Xbox....

the system REALLY needs some more Japanese RPGs ...and jsut normal RPGs in general, so many Action RPGs, not enough turn based story driven ones :(

oh and ffs i want a sequal to D&D Heroes....or at least i want another good 4 player game like that ! ...stupid other games only being 2 players :(

Xbox was a great secondary system (ps2 being my first) when I first bought it but these last couple of years it has become my main system. Just too many quality games to ignore and the type of games people say are missing from it's lineup I could do without. Bring on the 360!

Listen up pilgram, the XBox has the most acclaimed library of games on the planet. Project Gothom Racing, Halo series, KOTOR series, Jade Empire, Pyschonauts (built for the Xbox, Splinter Cell (bulit for the XBox), Panzer Dragon Otra, the Otogi series, and it has XBL.

This si exactly how it was with me.

Had PS2, played a few Xox titles and never looked back. I only break out my PS2 for my wrestling games.

KOTOR and Halo are also PC games.

mmm Clancy games...

i love me some Splinter Cell ! ...wish the story was better, and co-op was just as important as the main game. The game is so amazing though, great single player, wicked fun Co-Op, and a Multiplayer you cant find anywhere else!
