Overgrowth - Weird combat game made by some guy for PC

Don't turn this into a "omg furry I hate this game" thread. From what I can see, the animation is pretty godlike and it looks like this game is shaping up well. To enter this thread only to deride it because it has anthropomorphic animals (like, I dunno, Epic Mickey or something) means you aren't looking at what makes the game enjoyable.

Tried out the first game (Lugaru) and thought it was alright. This looks so much better. Can't wait, may pre-order.

uh...the animation in this is godly. It's seriously better than most shit that bioware and Bethesda can do. No sarcasm. With the right funding, these dudes could become a serious developer one day.

I honestly love far out and weird stuff like this. It really inspires me to become an independent developer myself.

Preordered.

They already are a developer to be reckoned with. It comes down to thoughtfulness, constant community communication and a dedication to create something rather unique. Makes them triple A in my book.

I don't care for anthropomorphic characters at all. I'm okay with other people liking them but I find them unappealing. But I'm getting Solatorobo and now it's looking like Overgrowth is turning out surprisingly well. I was surprised by Luguru when I got the first Humble Indie Bundle. The combat definitely was interesting. So I'm keeping my eye out for this game.

From what I've seen, it looks like the bulk of their development has been developing their engine, not actually creating the game. They have some cool tech, but I would be surprised if this game came out any time soon.

Yeah, we hear about art and storyboarding stuff going on behind the scenes, but it's hard to say how much scenario stuff has actually been put together from the weekly updates they give us. I'd rather they take their time on the fundamentals than rush to put out the game, though. Their programmer (singular!) has put together some truly impressive stuff in extremely short spans of time, like advanced blood physics and active ragdolls that look as good as Euphoria.

Beyond the bunny people I find the idea of playing a game like this with a mouse and keyboard weird. Will you be able to map inputs to a controller in a way that makes sense?
It's based around movement with WASD, camera control with the mouse, a jump button, a crouch button, and left/right mouse. Sounds like something that you could very easily adapt to dual analog via Joy2Key or Xpadder if there's no official controller support.

Looks great, except for the manbunnies. They're weird, it's not like Starfox or something like that, these are really creepy for some reason. They'd be ok for enemies, but for the main character? no thanks. Will wait for a human mod.

Ah well. Nobody complained about Bloody Roar.

I'm really liking the look of this! No idea why the thread quickly dissolved into an argument about furries; I think the half-realistic/half-stylized rabbit characters work in the same way Rango's art direction worked. Besides the fact it isn't *that* kind of furry, I don't know why people make it their solemn duty to bring up other people's stupid but mostly-harmless internet fetishes in anything remotely related.

Downloading the demo now to get a proper feel for this, I'll post back in a bit after I have.

There's a demo?

I got Lugaru with one of the Humble Indie Bundles and thought it was super weird. Seemed like maybe it had a lot of depth, but was extremely poor at communicating it to you and was super difficult otherwise. I think I made it about 4 fights in before I was tasked with facing too many enemies, and often ones with weapons.

I remember hearing about Overgrowth from the Moddb podcast back when they were first doing it, and one of the founders of the site seemed to have a lot of faith in the Overgrowth project, saying that these guys were "the real deal".

It definitely looks impressive, I guess. Hope it's easier to play than Lugaru was.

The only thing about Overgrowth that gives me pause is the price. $30 for an indie alpha is a bit spendy. Nay, it's downright decadent.

If I'm not mistaken, Wolfire wants you to think of it as a regular $30 pre-order with the alpha as a bonus, rather than a Notchware type of thing. They also seem pretty industrious compared to Mojang.

You also get the editor you can see in the alpha change videos.

You are wrong for not buying the NS2/Overgrowth bundle for $30 from a long time ago.

cor, I like the jumping animation. I hope he works with someone to turn this into an action RPG or something that can actually be considered a game rather than big open fields of combat beta testing.

I was playing one level where I was coming down a hill to face three enemies at the same time. Given how vulnerable you are in this game, actually managing to kill all three of them on my first try was one of the most intense feelings I've had in a videogame in a while.

Terrible thread title is terrible.

I am honestly blown away that there has been heated discussion about the dislike of the character models.
What ever could it possibly mean.

The dragging is awesome but............how does it affect gameplay?
Tenchu Style Stealth?

I'm assuming in the future this will be a fleshed out game with buildings and architecture to obscure enemy view, thus you could go around for whatever mission as an agile ninja bunny who can jump stories tall and hide bodies as he stealthily knocks them out.

EDIT:

And with that I just convinced myself to preorder.

I have fallen in love. The animation, combat, and art are all fantastic. There is something very eerie about silent bunny people beating each other up in a beautiful world, and I love it.

I give major props to the programmer. What a talented and dedicated guy!

Edit: What kind of specs do you think you need to run this? I am really itching to play it.

Ah, why couldn't this guy be working on this instead? Oh well, I will probably get both after they're more finished... But a mix with the best of each would have been sweet.

Why would he want to go from developing his own awesome project to working on a project that looks by all comparison terrible.

I don't understand why one guy can make a body dragging system where it actually looks and feels like you're dragging a body, but dragging a body in a HUGE BUDGET AAA MAJOR GAME still looks and feels like you're pulling along a big paper doll with constantly glitchy physics.

Because that one has a samurai instead of the rabbits. Honestly, I love the bunny characters. It's pretty different from what we normally see.

People who don't like the rabbits in this game clearly never grew up with amazing things like Watership Down, The Secret of Nimh, and Maurice Sendak. Or have read Mouse Guard.

To be fair, not every developer has a demi-Carmack building their engine from scratch and perfecting entire feature sets on a weekly basis.

I don't understand why the rabbits have to be an issue at all. Do I particularly care or require an explanation for why anthropomorphized leporids are being used instead of humans insofar as the game is concerned? Not really.

This is as close to a new Jazz Jackrabbit as we're ever going to get. That's not necessarily a bad thing, either. This game looks fantastic!

I'm really interested in what the gameplay is going to be like in the final version. I just hope it still has the exploration and whatnot.
