Lol, I don't know what would be the best way to deter guys from quitting but the way they have it now is not optimal.
It would place all of the habitual losers down at like rank one, in the pits of hell where they belong, never to return to higher rank play ever again.

Honestly, I'm just salty because I ended my placement rankings with a 46 and I wanted to be higher

Honest question guys, how do you counter a Bastion hiding behind a Reinhardt on the payload? I was really struggling against a team that did this earlier today.

They should do it like in WoW's pvp where if you leave a match you get a deserter buff that won't let you join another game for 15 mins. So basically 15 minutes on the naughty step to cool off. That on top of the existing threats of suspension from competitive play.

D.Va? Raise ur shield, fly right up to him and let 'er rip? You'll probably die in the process, but you'll mess up their flow and your teammates should be able to seize the opportunity your sacrifice gave them.

sneak with roadhog to hook rein off so team unloads on him. or pull bastion and kill him. or. ult with tracer.

Went 6-4. Rank 47. What the hell?

Did you duo with people?

It also takes into account your performance in the games and who you were matched with, its not a straight forward "Win x get y" formula, it depends on performance, group strength, enemy strength etc.

You need to get to the side or behind, tracer or reaper to teleport behind, or i also like junkrat for dealing big direct damage to them since they are large easy targets

Once again, a reminder for the stupid idiots out there.

If you absolutely refuse to pick a support to help your team, at least protect the person who bites the bullet and picks a healer. Like seriously. They are there to help you. For the love of god, please at least pay a little bit of attention so that your healer doesn't get instantly double teamed by Reaper and Tracer every time they try to help you. It's really not that hard. Listen to the audio cues. Open your god damn ears.

Always interesting watching the growth of a new competitive scene having spent 5 years with LoL, hearing peoples concerns and hatreds about matchmaking, feels like being home.

Matchmaking will change some as they make it better but at its core you will always have

* Losses you didnt deserve
* Bad teammates
* Toxicity
* Some level of imbalance
* Days where you cant win
* That one champ that you wish you could delete from the game

This is the contract we all sign :3, there is no matchmaking in existence that will get rid of the "Human" problem, gotta embrace it.

I can handle toxicity.

I can handle stupid teammates doing things like not pushing at the right moment.

I can handle having bad streaks of my own play.

I can handle that I think Mei is a piece of shit that should be cut from the game.

I can handle having to carry my team the whole game and still losing.

The one that that I just cannot abide is getting penalized because of inconsiderate leavers (or people with shit connections). I absolutely despise that.

EDIT: Didn't we have this problem with Rocket League and leavers last year? I seem to remember that the solution was that once someone left from your team, you could leave without penalty as well.

I've never played Rocket League -- if there are ranked matches, do people harass other players into leaving if they're doing poorly?

The big fear that Riot Games and Blizzard have always raised is that if everyone can leave once a teammate leaves, people will harass the weakest links in losing games, trying to save their own rank by forcing a leave.

Did Rocket League implement this system without people abusing it?

Toxicity and losing streaks are things out of control; they happen in any competitive environment.

The issues ranked has are legitimate and fundamental; they make you question why are you playing that mode in the first place. Ranked is messed up because of two things: its level up design, and matchmaking (of placement tests). Leveling up is a very vulnerable system, and it is flawed. It takes a linear input of either a win or a loss (which is to some extent affected by average rank of opposing team). Linear input in a very complex system that is volatile, as it involves multiple players and individual performances, can lead to weird things such as winning streaks, losing streaks, back and forth i.e 50% winrate--it is very volatile but has a linear progression. And seriously, how can your skill level DROP in a couple of matches? Do you lose millions of neurons per match? What the actual shit? And I have yet to get grouped up with players of a higher ranking above 40, so the match making groups you up with a very limited skill pool that doesn't mean shit.

Secondly, that linear progression has technical issues i.e quitters who botch wins, so you have a higher chance of ranking down. And there are certain levels of play that break this system and makes it completely unpredictable, which is below rank 40. You get all the gold medals and good stats, but your consistent good performance has an inconsistent leveling up progression.

In my opinion, rank and leveling up should completely reworked up from the ground; it ignores a lot of metrics that determine your skill level. And the technical issue of quitters will fundamentally make this system flawed.

I can't remember what the difference between Ranked and just normal RL play was.

I think the system was if you left Ranked, you got a 15 minute penalty and a max point loss. If anyone else on the team left, they just got a loss. I didn't like the loss, but at least in that case there was a time deterrence along with the penalty.

I don't think there was any problem with that implementation at least.

The Lockdown trophy was supposed to be fixed, right? I just did it twice on Anubis and didn't get it. I was playing with my friend though and he got it.

They have to do something about solo queue. This is absolute insanity. I have never played a game that had matchmaking this frustrating.

had a good run on ranked volskaya. we rushed the point before they set up. basically the left side is always open. they did it to us as well. we did it again. now they tried to do it. we delayed them this time on point a. but unfortunately we lost the point. so we had to defend the remaining 4 minutes on point B. surprisingly did well. had to change from lucio to winston just for the health. managed to win.

Competitive mode just seems to be people quitting when it's not going their way, which completely fucks over the rest of their team.

Played 4. Won 3. Lost 1. Two of those wins came from winning the first round then having two people from the opposition side quit, meaning their team has absolutely no chance to pull it back.

I honestly can't understand why people bother playing online games if they can't just accept defeat once in a while.

yup, if you didn't place well above 50, don't bother solo queuing. You will drop even lower, it's impossible to climb.

This is simply untrue, at least on PC. I played 48, dropped to 45 or 46, and climbed back to 48 without much issue. I hover around 46-48.

Solo. One game the whole team quit. That's my guess as to what happened.

I know I've bitched about this but I really think competitive fucked with quick play's queues, before the update it would be rare as fuck for a team not to have one tank and healer, now it happens all the goddamn time. I've had to go healer because the last people to pick don't pick so many times since the update.

How come when the other team has a quitter in the last 2 minutes, you get a sliver of rank points even though you dominated the whole game but when the quitter is on your team, you lose half a rank or more? Am I just imagining this? Seems fucked up.

This is what I was talking about:

If they don't add a leaver penalty, it's going to get bad. You only gain about 1/20 of a level if someone leaves on the other team, no matter how late. So, if you're winning KOTH or some other long map, the losing team will just quit with one person near the end, essentially preventing anyone from leveling up.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, though.

"YOU CAN LEAVE THE GAME WITHOUT PENALTY"

*leave game*

Deranked.

The fuck lol.
The game will still count as a loss for you, but you didn't receive a "penalty." A penalty is a strike for quitting. For those that quit enough they'll receive a 75% XP reduction. If they quit further they can be banned from the season.
BN8AK1Q5NC9Z1467079584639.jpg

Because of the more serious nature of the mode, penalties are more severe. In Competitive Play, leaving a game early or stepping away from your computer during a match will make you ineligible to join a new game until the original match has been completed. There is an option to rejoin an in-progress game—however, failure to rejoin will result in a penalty.

Continued infractions will lead to restrictions on future competitive matches. As the violations start to pile up, Competitive Play will be locked for an increasing amount of time. Completing matches without incurring further penalties will, eventually returning the account to good standing. But repeated violations can also result in a ban on Competitive Play for the current season—including the forfeiture of any rewards.

You might have already known that and just been venting. Either way, it sucks and I'm sorry it happened.

Yeah this has been my experience. And moving up is very hard, even if I'm on a team that wins I only go up by like a fraction of a rank. And I still think it's stupid that there are fractional ranks. Ranks don't work that way! Ranks are ordinal numbers.

that's a lot of words and I hear you, but in the end they just amount to excuses that will slow your own improvement. If you're in the 35-40 range and are having a hard time improving, there are a lot of things you need to get better at. If there's one thing I know after playing MOBAS competitively for 5 years, it's that most people aren't as good as they think they are. You're not as good as you think you are either. You're not a 60 rank player trapped in the stupid penitentiary of 30 rank players and unable to escape or convince the warden to let you out for good behavior. You're a 30-something player that will get better over time if (s)he puts the work in to get good.

You have quitters, bitchers and underperformers at every level of play. People have bad days. People have off games. People sometimes play something to fit the comp that they aren't individually strong at and struggle. I had to carry an offensive Torbjorn on Hanamura, but I did carry his ass and stayed positive while the rest of the team flamed him before the match even began. Look for ways to improve the alkaline levels on your teams via being positive in voice chat and encouraging others to do the same. Spend your time looking at what YOU can do to carry more than your own body weight on your team. It'll be far more productive than tilting like all the other people around you. As has been said by one wiser than myself:

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;

Keep your eyes on the prize and man up. Moonmoon (the popular streamer that plays with popular streamer Seagull a lot) lost 9 ranks today and he didn't blame anyone along the way. Learn the lesson.

so you're saying you didn't really climb, that's the thing... Next week you will still be hovering around those levels more likely that not. It's just about coin flips of getting decent teams.... consecutively and even if you manage that you lose a lot of it by one stinker.

If you're on the level of someone like surefour, yeah you can solo carry most teams like he was doing on stream but that doesn't apply to most.

I guess my idea of a penalty is different from what blizzard intended. Dropping a rank from people on my team quitting seems penalizing enough. There is no hope when a person leaves on Temple of Anubis. Especially attacking lol.

You suggested anyone below 50 could only drop lower and not climb -- instead, I easily gained a couple of levels back to my appropriate skill level. If I become a better player, I strongly suspect I can gain more levels than my original placement.

There are more factors that can drag your ranking, so yeah, you're more likely to lose ranks than gaining. DCs, leavers etc.

I've had a couple matches today where we start with teams that look balanced but by the end of it we've got like 3 pharah's, a bastion and a genji. I swap out and try cover but there's only so much you can do.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Rank 50 shitters: "Don't pick torb!"
*lose first round of Volskaya defense"
*second round someone picks torb and we run down the clock*
*almost lose the flip to a torb as well*

I wish these bads would stop thinking that the pro meta actually affects games at their level.
