Pachter talks about AdBlock

The latest episode of the John and Garnett podcast, music started playing on Garnett's PC when he accidently moused over an ad while he was looking something up.

It's not that much different than this, although gaf doesn't look as shitty.

Are you kidding? NeoGAF's front page ad is NOTHING like that one on IGN. NeoGAF is just an evolution of a normal banner ad. The IGN one is like putting a TV ad on a newspaper.

I think if AdBlock really is that big an issue for Content Creators, they need to be extremely careful with the type of ads they allow on their content. Ad creators are the ones who pushed everyone into using Pop Up blockers, AdBlock, NoScript, etc. because of not only quality of use problems with the ads taking over focus and auto playing as loud as possible noise, but also for security reasons.

I don't think it is very fair to ask users to put their systems at risk.

I mean, that's fine with me. I don't really watch YouTube gaming "shows" anyway, especially Let's Plays. The only thing video game related I watch on YouTube are griefing videos, and they definitely don't ask for money in return.

Yeah it's just too bad that the entire world doesn't revolve around you and your needs/habits.

It's really easy to justify using AdBlock when the benefits of an ad-free experience outweighs the couple of cents that would go to the content creators. Unfortunately, a lot of people think this way, so it's like how no single raindrop is responsible for the flood.

Wanna know where much of the viruses and malware come from?

Yeah...

From religious sites.

Ontopic:
I don't have a problem with the ads on their own most of the time, but more with the implementation.

Nearly everything is in damn Flash and this trend doesn't seem to end.
Can't things be done in HTML5?

It's a resource hog, even on high-end PCs.

I have at least 20 tabs open the majority of the time. I just feel Chrome puffing for breath when ever tab uses Flash.

And I notice Flash crashes a lot more often when I disable Adblock Plus everywhere.
That's problematic because I buffer Youtube video's in 1080p to 100% since my internet connection is garbage, and I need them 1080p doe.

This is why the direct-to-consumer movement has been so important, not just in the gaming industry (and things like Kickstarter), but in other industries, as well. The problem we're facing is that the internet has been completely privatized over the past decade and consolidated into the hands of just a few key players. So now content creators are being pitted against their own readers over a few cents in ad hosting revenue. It's gross. I feel absolutely no compunction about short-circuiting a minor part of that system by using AdBlock. It's an easy decision.

Unfortunately, a lot of people think this way, so it's like how no single raindrop is responsible for the flood.
I refuse to grant ads any sort of "ethical imperative." While I understand that this is a way to fund content creators/hosts, why should readers bear the brunt of the guilt over that? Redirect the ire at internet service providers and the giant media/advertising conglomerates that put content creators in precarious financial situations in the first place. Consumers should feel no guilt about using AdBlock. The guilty parties here are the major service providers (like Comcast, ATT, etc) and advertising managers (like Google).

Pachter always sides with businesses over consumers, so his position is no surprise. Consumer rights only matter to him insofar as they might lead to more profitable business practices. Otherwise, he couldn't care less about end users (who he regularly refers to as "entitled").

This has been cooking for quite some time. GT has been posting surveys asking if we are using adblock, they were moving away from videos to written text etc.
