Why not 3D? The 3D trailer seemed excellent.

yeah why not in 3D?

Because I never risk post-converted 3D - I'm yet to find a post-converted film which comes close to native. Obviously you can watch it in 3D if you really want. Maybe this is a first.

Also, Sent was working on a much more info-heavy OT than me, so here's his stuff for those that prefer those kinds of OTs:

I wouldn't normally but I've already made everything for the OT. Sorry, man.

That's ok. Feel free to use any of this then.

“This is not a super-brooding, super-dark, cynical summer movie. I wanted very much to do a movie that is aiming for a young audience. Adults can be, God willing, entertained by the big, beautiful, sophisticated visuals and the action and all that, but my real hope is that this movie allows for a new generation of kaiju and robot kids that fall in love with giant monsters.”

- Guillermo del Toro

PLOT SYNOPSIS
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end.

To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.

But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat after 12 years of fighting, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes--a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee -- who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Should I see this in 3D?
Yes, the 3D is very good!

Why not just use missiles and nukes?
Conventional weapons such as bullets, missiles, tanked proved too weak. It took too long (6 days) to take down the first Kaiju, and we had to resort to nuking it in the middle of San Francisco. Goodbye SF.

After three to four of these attacks we built the first Jaeger to confront the Kaiju as a defensive line. To cut them off and kill them.

Why two pilots? Why the dumb cockpit? Why not just remote control the robots? Neural what?

Why not just nuke the portal?
Spoiler
They tried that and nothing can go back through the portal. So the nuke just bounced off.

You can use a boat as a bat? Structurally you can't do that. And what about those helicopters?!

Isn't this just Evangelion/Transformers rip-off?
This movie is del Toro's love letter to the Kaiju and giant robot GENRE. Evangelion and Transformers also fall into this genre. Del Toro took inspiration from all previous works. As a kid he watched Tetsujin 28, Gigantor, Ultraman, Godzilla, etc.

In his featurette on the robot designs he said he made sure to take no direct impressions or copies from any other work.

Evangelion isn't the first and only robot anime/show. Big O, Eureka 7, Gasaraki, Gundam, Macross, Tengen Toppa Guren Lagann, Patlabor, Mazinger, VOTOMs, RahXephon, Escaflowne, etc.

Bottom line is that - No, it's not a rip-off. It's a brand new entry into the genre.

How do I pronounce Jaeger and Kaiju?
Yay-gur and Kai-joo respectively.

This movie is going to bomb.
That isn't a question.

PREQUEL COMIC

iIMHqLmoieJlA.jpg

If you want to learn more about the back-story of Pacific Rim I highly suggest reading this comic.

"Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero"

This prequel comic written by the screenwriter Travis Beacham (screenwriter). It follows the reporter Naomi Sokolov as she does research for an article titled "Why We Fight."

She talks to various characters about their history in the war. We learn about the first attack on K-DAY, how deadly Kaiju blood is, and the conception/development of the Jaeger program. Characters in the comic include Stacker Pentecost, Tendo Choi, and Dr. Jasper Schoenfeld (who first had the idea for giant robots).

The 3D was pretty good. Didn't detract from the movie but it wasn't at Avatar levels. This was RealD 3D btw. Don't know if IMAX 3D is technically different or not.

FWIW, after seeing the trailer in 3D, I can say that it seems as though it's going to look un-fucking-believable. Unless of course they did 3D differently in the trailer than the full movie. Anyone here see 3D screenings have impressions?

It should be noted the VFX were rendered in native 3D whereever possible.

Also, surprised this wasn't in the OP:

I watched the trailer in IMAX 3D on a full size IMAX screen (of course it did not fill the screen). It was pretty amazing.

This movie has so much potential, I hope it can live up to it. Really want to go see this but will hold of until the reviews start pouring it.

Wild card of the summer. Some think it will flop, others think it will be a smash hit.

I look at the competition and what stands out is that there really isn't much in the blockbuster sense. This will be great summer escapism for people.

I'm guessing $65m opening and $175m overall

Hype! Let's do this! Together!

Also, I'm fairly surprised that my city will get the first viewing poster. It shall be mine!

Yeezy reminding all of us that behind the pompous attitude and leather jeans he's still a giant fucking nerd like the rest of us (just look at what Kim got him for Father's Day), I love it.
