Paradox aquires White Wolf from CCP

Could be surprisingly decent. Like Crusader Kings but clan politics.
I don't know. The thing is, that not much open conflict happens in the World of Darkness. Especially on the Vampire side of things. Can't be a too exciting version of grand strategy. They should take the Skylines people and let them make a management game where you don't build the city itself, but infrastructure within an existing one.

It's been terrible, hasn't it? All-time great game in 2004 and... Nothing. What a waste of one of the best settings in gaming.

I'm with you, bro/sis.

Obsidian is obviously the best choice since they have absorbed a good chunk of Troika.

Thinking on it, the perfect scenario would be Larian developing and contract work from the Mitsodas to handle the writing side and general direction of the game.

Obsidian's pretty weak on the writing front ATM. No Avellone, no Gonzales, who were instrumental in Alpha Protocol and New Vegas, respectively. I don't really want a Bloodlines follow-up to be an exposition fest like Pillars was.

No Brian Mitsoda either, wasn't he fired by Obsidian awhile back or am I thinking of someone else?

I just hope, if it happens, that it will be again in first plus third person perspective. Engine something nice like Source 2 or Unreal 4. I don't want 2D thing like pillars or 3d isometric like Divinity.
Of course that will require decent budget, not sure if paradox can swing it.
Unreal 4 would make the most sense I feel like given VTMBs First/third person nature. I think they would be insane to try and revive Vampire in a manner that is tied to the Bloodlines game and not make the same style/genre of game, it's too passionately beloved, even if the audience isn't huge.

Necessary.

Wow, I had no idea CCP owned the Vampire IP. I thought they were just making the MMO...

This is great news. Paradox has shown a lot of promise with their business dealings recently, announcing great stuff and cancelling things that don't work out (RIP Runemaster).

I'm pretty sure this is a masquerade violation.

I hope everyone is retweeting this at Obsidian and Sawyer and the rest of the gang.

If they are going to do another Kickstarter after PoE, this is the one.

Call the Camarilla!

Oh man such awesome news. When CCP bought white wolf it was such a downer of ad ay even with them talking MMO. What they talked was way too ambitious for them to ever deliver.

Paradox at least gives me hope the IPs will be used. Bloodlines needs a sequel.

Oh man I can't get too excited about this, but it's hard. World of Darkness is easily my favorite rpg settings/rule set. I'd like to see a Werewolf or Mage game, or even something from the more unusual cultures/books like Wraith or Mummy. Hunter got a game, so why not?

-edit- Shit, I just realized the hunter game came out in 2001. Wow.

What's great about this is I have a feeling that Paradox won't make every table top book go through multiple approvals before the teams (that originally created it!) can publish new materials. I'm a backer of the Mage: The Ascension deluxe edition, and seeing how many times they were "waiting for approval from CCP for the next step" in emails was frustrating. I'd also love to see a new Bloodlines, or a good Mage/Werewolf/Changeling game.

They already said that White Wolf will work independently. So I doubt Paradox will get their hands in unless something flashy happens.

Funny thing about Bloodlines is that we've seen games built similarly see success in the modern market. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is structurally very similar to Bloodlines, in terms of overall hub-to-mission game pacing, combination of dialogue and combat, light exploration, hub side quests, etc. Bloodlines found a pretty nice balance (read: ultimately broken, but still fun) of table top role playing elements (conversations, skill trees, stats) while also being predominantly real time action driven in all your actual game functions instead of dice rolls.

You could almost take Bloodlines in its complete game design and dialogue as is, and remake it with a modern coat of paint, polish up the few rougher stretches of game (like those fucking sewers), and you'd still have an outstanding gem of a game.

Like, I think the template for a very faithful and similarly designed successor is there, without the need to seriously scale back or hinder the design, for the modern market.

Hell, I would even settle for a Bloodlines HD edition ported to an updated version of Source and polished up with some of the stuff that never got finished or implemented. I've gotten people who are "fairly" casual gamers way into Bloodlines and they still had a fantastic time even with it being busted, the game it's self holds up shockingly well on PC as far as character models go.

Get source film maker onto those Cutscenes and it would be magic.

The main trick yet to be raised for VtM:B getting a fresh new injection? The music. I don't know how in the hell they'll pull off an original score and mix of licensed tracks that will equal or exceed the original---very different soundtrack approach versus most games out there to this day. Gonna have to go into some deep cuts indeed for a contemporary take on it all however they slice it...

Here's a paragraph from the current front page of www.white-wolf.com

Tonight, the original saga of monsters among us continues! On October the 26th 2015, Paradox Interactive acquired White Wolf Publishing and the World of Darkness. White Wolf is based in Stockholm, Sweden, with a brand new team and a focused vision. As a separate company owned by Paradox Interactive, White Wolf is dedicated to bringing it’s gritty and mature brand of participatory storytelling to fans new and old. This vision will be realized in multiple digital games titles, across a full range of media and immersive live-action events.

The whole thing they wrote on there makes it's sound like the team at White Wolf is happy about this, and that's a good thing.

I really want a lighter EU/Crusader Kings where you play all the vampire clans against off each other from the original setting, or whatever setting the vampires are in right now.

Like hell would Activision allow doing anything productive with that game

If we really want to go crazy with it, I'd kill for a Changeling: the Lost or Promethean game, but that seems unlikely. It'll probably take a while to get anything that isn't Vampire.

Well, they are operating as an independent company under Paradox, sounds to me like a huge step up to what you read about the relationship between WW and CCP.

Vamprie is the safest bet. Just let them make a successful Vampire game and other franchises are sure to follow.

Truth. But these games do not have an amazing Malkavian Club Manager and the best haunted house level ever. Your move.

Woah this is huge news, finally White Wolf and TWD are going to be in competent hands.

Lets get a remake of that 4 Player Co-OP Hunter: The Reckoning game now pls.

Yes. Yes! YES!

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines is such a fantastic game. It was not only extremely disappointing what happened to Troika, but that White Wolf's properties were going to complete waste under CCP.

Didn't CCP shut down the fan remake, rather than Activision?

I'm rather talking about a commercial reuse of Bloodlines. You could always buy back the name rights and licenses (which sounds weird since they're are the franchise's owner as of now) but I get the feeling that most big companies would rather keep the rights to an unused product than relinquish them for a petty penny.

I've never played these games before but World of Darkness was my most hyped game when I was a kid. It sounded like my dream MMO with an open sandbox, a political system and brutal melee combat, all developed by the people that made EVE Online. I could never get into EVE, as much as I wanted to and World of Darkness was described as EVE without the spreadsheets. It was going to be perfect. I will never forgive CCP for this.

Sadly, they missed the time frame, where Vampires were In again and they could have sell a new game to woman. Many female roleplayers love the tabletop Vampire games, a new game would have perfectly target them and people following the Twilight fandom.

Hell yeah love Paradox interactive, this is great. Only fear is that whatever does get released will have $100 worth of DLC attached to it. But otherwise this sounds pretty awesome.

I have no idea why CCP acquired the licence in the first place, they accomplished nothing but throwing money into the fire with their failed MMO project. Glad it's with a competent studio for a change.

Hopefully the success of Human Revolution and games like it helps sell a Bloodlines successor in the modern market. If I remember correctly Bloodlines didn't do well at all when it was originally released (though it being busted on release probably contributed a lot too).

White Wolf is the best IP that hasn't given us a great game in over a decade. That really sucks. Hopefully this acquisition sees that change.
