Parents 'waterboarded' daughter, 9, after she left bed to get a drink

Salt Lake City: A Utah couple used waterboarding as punishment for their nine-year-old daughter after she got out of bed to get a cup of water.

According to charges filed on Wednesday, the parents took their daughter into a bathroom with the cup, then bound her hands, covered her face with a towel and poured water on it for several minutes, leaving her unable to breathe.

The girl's stepmother told her at one point she "could die from this happening," charges state.

The child told police that the waterboarding had happened three times as punishment for things such as eating frosting.

Her father and stepmother also use belts and hangers to hit her, and sometimes forced her to do workouts such as squats or push-ups as punishment, she told police officers who were called to a hospital on December 3.

Police found injuries consistent with tied hands as well as other scratches and bruises, charges say. Two of the couple's other children also said the parents use things such as mobile phone charging cords and shoes to hit them.

The father "adamantly denied" using any objects as punishment, though he admitted sometimes using an open hand to spank them. He said the girl had got a drink after bedtime and they tried to put her in time-out but she wouldn't stay there. So they brought her to the hospital because they "needed help."

The father and stepmother were each charged with three felony and one misdemeanour counts of child abuse.

As for this topic, I read this, and I just have to hope that Grandma or Aunt Susan or whoever is completely awesome, and will make a loving and nurturing guardian for these kids. This is the reason why hospitals now ask "do you feel safe at home," while they're getting the details for your visit, and thank God they do. I can only imagine how many people that's helped. It may have even been the reason they started to look into abuse in this case.

I also find it fascinating that folks like these just take her to the hospital anyway. Did they really not know that what they were doing was wrong? Did they think they wouldn't get caught? It's just insane.
