this is what happens when an entire country spends a decade plus normalizing torture, through state-media collaborative propoganda efforts pushign multiple wars, through mainstream TV like 24 and the West Wing that glorified abusive state power to great critical and audience acclaim. Jack Bauer was a national hero who tortured people on the reg for pretty much the entire decade.
during the first decade of the War on Terror i was in public college, mostly art classes, so i was around more artsy types, and it was kind of a culture shock to go to my non-major classes. there was an Intro to Communications class that was my first w the general population and on the first day they asked what people wanted to be. almost everyone wanted to be CSI, go into forensics, detective work, etc. they were inspired by Law and Order and CSI and perhaps even wanted to do good, to fix the justice system. really they had two career paths: work for the police/justice system, or go into public service, work for the deep state, the CIA, FBI, etc. this question was put to my friends at more technical colleges as well, who were pressured to going into aerospace/defense industry post college. everyone is kind of funneled into this system, and the media brainwashes people, enforcing certain behaviors, aggressively recruiting talent for this unaccountable, murderous, spying multi-tentacled invisible beast.
the media fosters a fetishization of authority, it glorifies state power, it normalizes state violence. the state sets an example to some degree, so if people see the state getting away w shit, odds are they will feel no moral quandry w doing so themselves.
