Not to mention command&conquer, civ 4, age of empires 2, HM the original half-life since it spawned dozens of great mods like counterstrike, team fortress, natural selection. This list is peak "what was popular last week" taste

That's what pisses me off the most. Original Starcraft games isn't there at all. Neither are Warcraft 1 and 2.

It does feel like the people tasked with these lists don't have a lot of context beyond the last 5-10 years of gaming. Putting games from less than a year ago on a list like that is a little absurd.

Ultimately the greatest game ever released can't be something like BG3, you basically have to be into DnD to like it, it doesn't have the best mechanics, visuals, gameplay, story, etc etc, even if you do like DnD it's not the best in terms of mechanics or visuals, so how can you put it top?

I think the one that pisses me off the most is Metal Gear Solid 3 at 11. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but it's a great PS2 game that's almost certainly only that high because it got a PC port recently. I doubt it would be there if it released on PC in 2004. I'm not saying it shouldn't be on the list at all, but it makes it to 11 when there are so many classic and influential PC originals that aren't on there?

Ehhh...I think if the witcher 3 and BG3 came out the same year...BG3 wouldn't win that battle. Gamings' recency bias has gotten pretty bad.

Solid top 100 list, but i dont agree with the rankings.
I think Disco Elysium is a bit too high.
Minecraft should be a little lower too, i mean i get it its the most successful game of all time but that doesn't give it the right to be at the top just because of its appeal.
Persona 5 Royal should be lower, first its not really a PC game and second its not that good to be at the top.
Balatro is a prime example of look at me, im unique and not like the other girls
Stardew Valley is just a decent game what is this game doing in top 10 OF ALL TIME? lol
Outer Wilds is too low!!

The ranking system is unfair to old games, what is "Hotness" just because the game is currently hot doesn't make it good, Fortnite and Destiney are examples of this, at least they admit that factor being non-related to quality but i personally would reduce its value a little bit more.
Even Quality ranking is highly questionable and they didn't explain what exactly is Quality? How is Disco Elysium 1st in Quality, what kind of Quality are we talking about? just writing dialogue because as far as i know this is freaking Video Games and not books.
Quality should mean: Game Design, Level/World Design, Audio Design, Writing, Performance, Graphics, Art direction, all the package together, this should be quality.
So if you give me a lazy indie game like Stardew Valley or Vampire Survivors and put them as high some of the all time greats in PC gaming then you have some explaining to do.
As i said its a solid list for someone who bought a PC in 2024 and wants a list of games to buy, thats totally valid, i also agree with many picks, but MGS3? wtf is that even doing there? its not on PC unless you emulate it, i mean what are we doing here?

It's the best depiction of tabletop DnD in a video game, mechanics and all so to say you have to be into DnD and saying the mechanics aren't the best when nearly every RPG you play, JRPGs included, use it's rules on some level is honestly hilarious. There's a reason people are going nuts over it

There would be those in the BG3 and there would be those in the W3 camp. There is never a consensus on these things. But I do think BG3 is too new and fresh in everyone's minds to really put it up against a lot of games that have stood the test of time. And I personally thing BG3 is the best game of this generation.

Yeah but not everybody is into DnD so whether it's the best representation of DnD is irrelevant, you could make a representation of DnD in Roblox or Fortnite and make a clone of COD or something as well, it's just not the best game ever, also where is Valorant, Counter Strike, Doom shouldn't even be there, there's FPS games that offer what Doom does that aren't single player only, just from a technical point of view it's not even the best shooting game in terms of feel or visuals, and even playerbase doesn't touch others.
All of this stuff is subjective, but for arguments sake, i'd say if i was putting some sort of order to it, Minecraft is definitely number 1 and I don't even play it.

Ah! Don't take the list seriously. They do a top 100 list every year. I remember Dragon Age: Origins winning the top spot on the year of it's release and now it's number 94. They will do it again next year and it will completely change.

Writing a best of all time list for PC like it's a modern console that's only been out for 5 years is pretty fucking crazy lol.
Also some serious questions need to be asked. Is Halo 1 a worse game than "Pizza Tower" is not a question I'd have thought would be among them.
Console games ports like Metal Gear Solid 3 being higher than any Elder Scrolls, Total War or Deus Ex on a PC centric list is genuinely crazy.

Balatro in the all time top 10 is an immediate sign this list is short sighted. Sure, it’s fun and addictive, but will have exactly zero impact on PC gaming besides a few card game clones. Why not Dwarf Fortress, Age of Empires 2, Counter-Strike? Warcraft 3, a game that literally spawned MULTIPLE genres because it had such a genius map editor, not to mention evolving into WoW.
Not that I care all that much, but why make a list like this and just throw such obvious personal favorites and recency bias to the top?

I played BG2 a couple of years ago for first time on my retro games run. Played a whole bunch of crpgs for first time.

Bg3, Bg2 and Half Life 2 should be at least top 5. Destiny 2 is better than both Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines and KotoR 2. Kill me.

This is why so many modern AAA game miss the mark. Publishers show early builds to people that work for site like these and these clueless people give them feedback. I wouldn’t even give these people review copies of my game, you get better marketing sending early copies to twitch streamers.

These lists would run better if they encapsulated games as a series instead of its individual titles… IMO.
That will get rid of arguments such as Morrowind over Skyrim, or GTA Vice City over GTAV.
