I"m glade tycho spoke on this subject because this whole fucking rouse Epic tried to pull off is a complete Joke.

Epic going to PS3 first was never about user MODs and Tycho basically called him on it, and he is exactly right. Epic thought they could be the first real system seller type game for PS3. They wanted to be the knight in shining armor to PS3 fans and wanted to come out short term exclusive on PS3 to try to win over the hearts and minds of PS3 fans. They figure hell no games sell well on PS3 so lets try this.

Then to cover their asses with the 360 fanbase they blamed MS for not allowing user mods and made sure to let everyone and their mother know it wasn't the fans fault, but it is MS fault for not letting them deliver free user mods to the 360 fanbase.


Well there whole fucking rouse backfired. Sony fans still didn't buy their game in great numbers, the PC version is fucking bomba, and 360 version is going to bomb to because no games that are ports that come out 3-6 months later sell like gangbusters.

All Tycho did was call Epic on the fact that this whole deal had nothing to do with Epics stated reason for releasing on PS3 first since mods weren't even available right away and you need other hardware like memory cards or flash drives to even get them.

Didn't the original Far Cry had great number on the original Xbox? I dunno, if the UT3 is really good the 360 userbase will still buy it, based on its quality and the Epic name (developer's of GeOW).

In a way, EPIC's sort of hosed themselves in regards to any real spat they were having with MS. With the dismal PC sales, and the small PS3 userbase, the 360 is the only real place they can make their money back. Which means they've subverted their own bargaining position.

I think my PS3 brethren are going to be very upset when EPIC ramps up the advertising for the 360 release, because they don't really have a choice at this point. They either make it a success on the 360 or their flagship title is a big old flop.

They really should have pushed it harder on the PS3. Sony should have done some serious co-op ads with them.

To be honest expecting it to be a big hit on consoles always struck me as delusional. Why console fans would suddenly hop on an iteration of a long running mostly PC franchise with no real single player mode is asking a bit much imo.

It's not really a defense of Xbox Live, but I know what you're getting at. The point is, if they're going to throw stones, be careful of your glass house. If I had to guess, I'd say PA would support mod content on XBL, and disagrees with MS's policy. Tycho is disappointed because Sony/Epic positioned UT3 as the rallying cry that would break (or at least weaken) MS's flank on the matter.

I think some of the context is being lost here. Originally, Tycho posted his thoughts regarding the UT3 PS3 mod situation. It was a bit reactionary, surely, but entertaining and pointed.

...and contained at least one outright lie, designed to make UT look bad. Not surprised that you completely glossed over that fact.

Rein was miffed by the public criticism and responded to Tycho with the comments included in this post.

Which is considerably nicer than just calling the lawyers, when you come to think about it. Thinking being the something Tycho obviously did not do.

PA is rebutting Mark's critique, just as he is responding to theirs. Tycho wasn't sitting around wracking his brain for ideas on how to be an attention whore. The reason he is fully on the attack is because Mark Rein called him out. Mark asked for this, so the kid gloves come off.

Tycho is being a childish little bitch, and has proven now that his only intent is to make Rein and UT look bad at any cost. Sniping at Rein for CCing his own writing, when he then goes and posts the whole thing publicly on a blog for thousands of people to see is just too rich.

Tycho going the extra mile and fabricating yet another outright lie (the whole thing about iPod transfers requiring a Linux hack) in defense of his first outright lie, well, that's just indefensible.

Tycho is going to the extreme to call attention to the main point: UT3 on PS3 was supposed to have mod support at launch. This fact was supposed to be putting pressure on Microsoft to soften their stance on user created content. Tycho was showing how it was disingenuous to make such a big deal about accessing the user created content, and then making it a pain in the ass to actually enjoy.

Tycho has no business calling anyone disingenuous at this point, when he himself is attempting to cover a lie with more lies. Tycho is throwing stones around in a huge glass condo of his own construction.

I think PA just wants a little more sincerity from Mark and a little less PR bullshit. Clearly the problem isn't with Epic; they're doing all they can, and should be commended for formatting and releasing the best content for PS3 users.

You are insane if you really believe this. Tycho's attack on Rein is obviously personal now. Tycho wants to be a brave critic of the gaming world, but goes off on a public hissy-fit when Rein calls him out for a blatently untrue criticism. Tycho can dish it out, but he can't take it.

The problem is with getting Sony to finalize the contractual agreement for use of their code (which really should have been ironed out during production). Instead Mark's defensive, because he can't really deny the main point: Sony/Epic is having trouble delivering on their promise, and that trouble validates Microsoft's policy rather than undermining it as intended.

So in short, Sony and Epic talked a lot of shit about Xbox Live being closed. Tycho reckons they need to eat a bit of that in light of this mess.

So, you are suggesting that Tycho has appointed himself the head of the gaming world's Karma Police? Wow, if that's true, then Tycho is a bigger asshat than I thought after this episode.

People. Seriously, reading comp? Tycho never disses mod content. He is, in fact, disappointed with the LACK of accessible mod content. He's on your side dude, really.

He's saying you shouldn't have to buy a fucking thumb drive and a PC to play user maps. You'd also be buying that equipment to play user maps IN THE FUTURE, because the PC tools necessary to make said maps can't create PS3 usable files. Yes, Epic converted a few of the best maps for players to enjoy, which is awesome. It's not what they promised though. At all.

Skimmed the thread. Mod distribution should have been worked out by Epic/Sony before the game, but they pushed the game out for the holiday rush. Rein was always coy about how the mods would be distributed in early interviews, mainly answering with "We're still working on the details." They're still working them out. Just put them up on PSN every week. If Sony can put up Wallpapers/Themes, Mods should be a no brainer.

With that said, how do some of you find the energy to go back and forth on a nearly daily basis?

The same amount of people that use and care about mods? Seriously, PA has a huge influence on the gaming community. That's why devs and publishers have a presence at PAX. Personally, I don't think they're necessarily tastemakers in the industry, but I think it's kind of a cultural touchstone for the gaming community, at least the more hardcore aspects of it (who, incidentally, probably drive a majority of the software sales in the industry, at least).
