How is this show overall? Does it sexualize the vampires excessively, or is it more in the Universal/Hammer mold? I never liked True Blood, but I liked the concept of Van Helsing.... Too bad it never worked in practice.

I've been avoiding this thread cuz I've been catching up on this show, to avoid spoilers... haha...

It's .... unexpectedly enjoyable. I came here after Jonathan Rhys Myers' Dracula, having been super disappointed by that, and then Penny Dreadful <3

I'm on the second to last episode now <3

Somewhat unrelated, but Eva Green is the star of the new Campari calendar.

Red suits her well.

Can't wait for this show to come back it's the only show where a DorianxChandlerxFrakenstien threesome is even a possibility. Also I can't wait for Madame Kali.

Just binged watched this show today and I really loved it. I think they did a really good job tying all these things together. I like that the show is fairly serious with zero campiness to it. Eva Green is just a great actress and the range of emotion she has shown is just outstanding. The seance scene was just riveting. It is one of the best scene's on TV this year easily.

I was really bummed they killed off Van Helsing because it shut the door on some variety on where they could go with the show.

Eva Green's possession scene is a genuinely bravura moment for any tv actor. My god she's astonishing. And whatshisface handsome is a genuine revelation.

Watched ep1... Wasn't feeling it... Does it pick up soon?

That would depend on what you weren't "feeling".
What the fuck does "pick up" even mean?
I see these questions in these threads and never understand what people want people to say.
Obviously people in here enjoyed it, so yes to many it "picked up" or had things that they enjoyed. But if you did not feel the first ep you may not feel any of it.
Watch more and decide for yourself.

The pacing is pretty languid throughout the season, but I'd watch the second episode before making a decision about whether or not you want to continue.

What about the possession scene, in which Eva Green sends every other TV actress back to babby school?

I didn't think the pilot was that interesting in and of itself, since it's playing up some obvious reveals. It gets significantly more compelling, I think.

The pace pretty much stays the same through the season.

Thanks! I will at least watch one or two more episodes.

I LOVE Penny Dreadful! Eva Green is really an amazing actress! She's so damn great at her role as Vanessa Ives, it's scary! No seriously, it's disturbingly good!

Aww yes, looking forward to season 2! Eva Green is a goddess.

Or play Mass Effect instead?
wat

Way to marginalize gay content. This isn't some Tumblr thing where thirsty fangirls are shipping nonexistent gay pairings. Chandler/Dorian actually happened. I think it would be interesting for that to go somewhere rather than exist as a random pointless episode.
