Perfect Dark (N64) appreciation thread

Even though I'm bummed out about how the new Perfect Dark looks, it got me to pull out my N64 and play the original. God damn, forgot how great this game was. This was before Rare lost a huge chunk of their talent. The smooth gameplay, the look of it, the music, the atmosphere... it all came back to me as I played the first level at dataDyne headquarters. I was fooling around with the game and I never realized you could play the game with two controllers (two analogue sticks turns the controls into a Halo-like set up). I tried it out and it would actually work very well if the analogue sticks on the N64 weren't so crummy. As it is now, it's a cool alternative that's there for people who can't stand the GoldenEye style controls.

I think it's pretty pointless to make a sequel to Perfect Dark when none of the original team members are even around anymore. But whatever, Rare.

Man, that game was awesome. It was truly Goldeneye to the next level. It was so ambitious and mostly achieved it all. I was never that much of a frame-rate worrier (until this gen, that is ), so everything was great. I loved Goldeneye, despite not beign a bond fan (the game was just plain good!), and to have the same game, x10 with a new character was great.

The weapons were fantastic, the levels were great, I loved the story (as cliched as it is). the graphics were blow me away, as was the sound and ai.

High lights:

Animation (hit locations and stuff - not replicated as well since, I reckon)
The weapons (just the way the controls were great - a to cycle forward, A+Z to cycle back - all had really cool secondary functions that you could set off as a once off, or swithc over entirely). Notables: laptop gun, and the auto lock-on robocop pistol.
The levels and difficulty (just like GE, the way they would change depending on the difficulty - the villa level, where you were sniper on easy, but the decoy on medium/hard!)
Mulitplayer: Brilliant execution...so many options, modes of play, and bots that were fun to play against! (note, I had never really played PCFPSs, so capture the flag, and other modes were great)
Challenge mode was genius - the challenges were a lot of fun and introduced teh differetn weapon sets and modes well - great how it was extremely playable on 1,2,3, or 4 players). I remember some of the levels being so hard to finish!
Lots of player setup options and player stats.

Man, there's just so much to that game (vehicles, mines you could throw on peoples faces, co-op, antico-op, motion blur, matrix level)...it was truly a huge upgrade to goldeneye, and that game was amazing as it was (made sniper popular, random guards, hit location animations, no weapons or ammo just 'lying around', mission based gameplay, stealth)....

Argh...I could go on. Man if there was any game that would make me get an XBox it would be PD.

It's out of my possibilities to understand how anyone could like that game.

From the stupid story (excellent beginning till the aliens appears), the stupid characters (OMG, Elvis is alive !), the horrible framerate (made me to throw up and feel dizzy) and the fact that this game had to be as awesome as Goldeneye...Well, too many things.

But since this is an appreciation thread I'll say what I liked:

1. Music.
2. The first 5 misssions.
3. The awesome Chicago stage.

I loved Perfect Dark. There was so much you could do in that game. And it kept track of everything you did in multiplayer. And remember the Farsight?! The gun that shot through walls? That made matches funny as hell. Only thing i didn't like about the game was the lag that it had if you put too much bots or explosive weapons in a match. Why don't other fps games have bots?! Is it that hard to do?

Awesome game. Would've been perfect...hehe...if it had a better framerate and the levels after the Chicago area would've actually been good. Still liked the overall map selection in GE more, though. Still, ahead of its time. Disarms, combat-boost bullet time effects, awesome gadgetry like the Laptop Gun, Farsight, and camspy. Great, but bullshit cheating AI for some of the Sims...fuck perfect sim. Yeah, fuck that cheap shit.

Sure, people appriciate Perfect Dark now there's a shit load of hype for the sequel.

I fucking love it though, probably the only game (apart from Goldeneye) I've gone through and completed 100%, and Perfect Agent was bloody hard.

I guess different people are into different things. Personally, I love sci-fi stories over spy stories/action hero stories, so I loved the premise of Perfect Dark over Goldeneye. I loved everything up to the Chicago level (datadyne, airforce one, villa), but I also loved the aliens coming into it...having to rescue 'Elvis' (Who sounded disturbingly like Grover), infiltrating the underwater complex, Area 51 to get into the alien ship, and eventually infiltrating the alien ship and taking out the aliens on their home planet did feel epic. So it's crazy, but crazy is fun for me. And coming from SNES and it being on N64 was a big deal for the game to have full speech (which was MUCH better than StarFox64 - I remember going gaga over the ending in Starwing on SNES, when fox spoke!).

Man just remembering such levels like the carrington institute invasion, especailly after learning the place as a training area/level hub made it particularly eerie (rushing from room to room to save your buddies was great). Remember the carrington institute website? Brilliant.

Oh yeah, teh gun challenges were AWESOME aswell. Man, I want to go play it all over again.

My favourite weapon: Tranquilizer. I loved messing people up with teh rapid fire blur, adn the oneshot injection was hilarious (followed by the one shot kill crossbow). It was awesome against the bots too...tranqing a bot up, so it was wandering around aimlessly was great. Was the key to finishing that near impossible challenge in the multiplayer villa level (AWESOME LEVEL) where you had to face a perfect elvis bot in a game of king of the hill (2-player).

Remeber also:

Fly by wire rockets (fun on villa multiplayer).
The extremely annoying N-bomb (especially when it was set to proximity- fun to be had on complex).

the only thing I really missed was that the pistols were so much faster (coupled with dual wielding), license to kill (one shot kills) in multiplayer was no longer fun - it was all we EVER played on Goldeneye - pistols, license to kill. However, in PD's defence, the weapons were so fast and powerful in general that it was practically one shot kills anyway).

Man, I loved licens to kill, pistols. No other FPS up to then felt as realistic.... you'd actually be scared to run into a room, because you could just die.... you could actually lay cover fire by firing down a corridor....having a one on one gunfight in a alrge room felt real...one mistake, and it was all over (running out of ammo in your current clip)....no ridiculous leaping all over the place...

besides graphics+framerate, and maybe sound quality, i cant think of a single thing to upgrade for a possible remake. everything else was perfect imo, PD was just so far ahead of its time. Me and my buddies played PD religiously well into the dreamcast era.

I think i have somewhere near 30,000 kills and im ranked 3rd. And thats not with meatsims either, we used normal-darksims every single match. A dark fistsim was the best one, hed fuck ur ass up in a hurry.

Framerate is actually a little better if you leave the hi-res option off. The option doesn't make it look even all that better. But still, yeah the game's framerate chugs sometimes.

The story wasn't the best but I never really played this game for the story.

:lol @ the picture above. The gamer on the far left is very clearly checking out Joanna's ass.
