Perfect Dark Zero details! :o

I agree with Odysseus here. The XBX is already saturated with semi-look alike FPSer graphics. I'm also sure that this won't change next-gen, (esp. w/XNA) I liked the Joanna renders because they were visually different, & imo much more can be acheived artistically & otherwise without adhering to this "photorealistic look."

Yeah, it seems like so many next-gen games that we know about are FPS games... We're even getting developers like Naughty Dog & Retro Studios, not traditionally known for straight-up FPS games, supposedly making FPS games next-gen.

:-/

I like a shooter as much as the next guy, but if a FPS is the best we can do with the new console technology, I have a tough time seeing the point.

Its rumored that Insomniac is developing a FPS for the PS3 as well, sadly.

I thought so too, but I was hoping I was just confusing that bad news with bad news that the new R&C game is a tactical squad shooter. :lol

I didn't read the whole thread so I don't know if anyone said this. I wish they would just remake the N64 Perfect Dark with better graphics, framerate and online support. I know most will disagree with me, but Perfect Dark is the best multiplayer experience I've ever had with a FPS.

Meh, the FPS is a full catergory unto itself, capable of sustaining its own subgenres like many other gaming categories. No need to instantly lump all future FPS games into the same pile just because they share some basic elements. RPGs, shooters, sports, racing, platformers, etc. can all vary within their own established ideas of implementation, as well as any other genre. And at this point, unless we've played this game ourselves, which only a few of the people who post here can claim, we know jack shit about this title. E3 is right around the corner, so I'm waiting to see what happens there before reacting in exaggerated manner.

Thank you for those all-too rare words of reason on the genre.

I think you're wrong. I'm sure that Rare changed Kameo to a female elf in green because they were afraid that the fairy thing was too gay for the xbox demographics. She's an elf now.

:D

No no NONONONONONO!! YOU need to open your EYES sir! She still has WINGS, therefore she is a FAIRY.

Because gung-ho shoot-the-shit-out-of-everything is so much more better...

I'd like a FPS where you can get through the game doing either.

voice of reason.

The genre peaked with Thief. Other developers are just wasting their time.
Voice of reason....i'm listening but I can't hear it.

Thief is hardly even the same freakin genre. Stealth shooters are entirely different from games like Thief.

Oh, but you misunderstand... the problem is that there still isn't a console based FPS that I don't play and think "I'd rather be doing this with a Mouse & Keyboard." They're playable, but no FPS this generation that I can think of really feels like it belongs on a console to me.

Next generation, I'm sure they're all going to be different from one another, but now that we've seen the actual Xbox 360 controller, I'm not sure they're going to PLAY much better... The genre isn't inherently awful, but it's a problematic one for me on a console, and I would prefer it if the majority of next-gen games we know about weren't FPS games.

I can play FPS games on consoles... I just would prefer to play them on my PC, so to see so many FPSes announced already for next-generation is irksome.

Jeeze, just wait until the Revolution comes out...if it does have gyroscopic controls, (basically confirmed) then it's gonna be an FPS wharehouse. And Racing games.

Heh, the Revolution will be the next Xbox? :lol

Oh, wait...I don't mean it like that...

It's still tough for me to imagine affordable Gyro controls offering better precision than a Mouse, but I guess I will wait & see on that front.

I'm not misunderstanding anything. As someone who, like many, started out playing FPS titles on the computer, I find that M&KB control is almost unassailable in its perfect and laser-like precision of control in the genre. However, starting with Goldeneye, I gained a healthy respect for console FPS controls and the unique feel that can only be given them if the game is fine-tuned correctly. There's a sense of tactile feedback in the best console FPS titles that simply cannot be replicated on any computer with the M&KB. It's just that simple for me. I can appreciate your take on things, but I can say that I'm glad I don't have your problem. There's just something about Halo 2 (multiplayer), man.

A friend of mine says he got a screenshot for this game (of course he said he wouldn't share it), but says it doesn't look as good as Halo 2. He also said that EGM was allowed to look at it, and thought the screens were a joke and laughed at Rare (who then had a little fit).

Of course this could all be BS.

Oh, I have no doubt that a mouse will always offer superior aiming over anything consoles have. I'm just saying, compared to an analog stick, the gyro will rule supreme. :p

Has to be BS. considering Xbox is essentially a GF3 w/ a 733 MHz processor, and Xbox 360 is a (dual? tri? what was the verdict) 3ghz PPC core w/ a next gen ati card. If it didn't look as good as Halo 2, then wow. Rare must suck at life.

Seeing how amazing Conker looks though, and how much time they've had to work on PD0, it should look absolutely stunning.

I fucking love Perfect Dark.

I hope they go for a goldeneye style FPS rather than just making Halo with Joanna Dark. Also, I hope the soundtrack is as good.

I'll admit that the mention of stealth has me worried. But then I remember that Perfect Dark and even Goldeneye had stealth elements, and they turned out great.

At any rate, the 360 launch has the potential to be mind-blowing.

Why can't they simply remake Perfect Dark ?

Yeah, why they did Conker instead of Perfect Dark I will never get. Maybe they will throw in a remake with PDZ. We should make that a rumour and spread it around ;)

I heard that Rare is remaking PERFECT DARK right now.

Yes. But whatever. IT TOOK DEM SO LONG BECAUSE THEY WERE WORKING FOR X360 ALLDE TIME.

Sorry, it was planned for the Xbox and the GameCube. They developed this game for 5 years!

They must already have remade the concept for like 5x times. It was first planned as a stealth game...

Yuck, stealth. Pass!

Agreed. I have a hard time with the stealth moments in games. It's simply not fun to be discovered and have to start all over again. Especially if it's so retarded you cannot shoot your way out of it.

I am looking forward to see PD0 though.

It'd be kinda cool if they included the original PD with PD0 as a bonus feature you could unlock. I wouldn't mind playing the first one again especially with a framerate that didn't resemble a fricken slide show.

I know that comment was obviously directed at the 'style' of the game.. but why the fuck didn't he mention the graphics? For fuck sake insiders.. that's what everyone wants to hear about. Geez.. Goddamn.

The complete selection of weapons and arenas from the first PD's multiplayer is what I'm hoping for, though I'm sure they didn't have time to include those...

meh, developers wont make particular games for a certain console based on its input methods or other such technology. They'll go where the money is.

Yes, it is obvious. The original context of what he was talking about was style (the cartoony/anime style of the old renders) and had nothing to do with graphical quality.

MS bought Rare as a long-term investment and didn't really expect to make benefit from acquiring them until the next generation. With Xbox360 coming out this year (right? or am I totally out of the loop), do you really expect their first huge Rare game to be on the Xbox when they're trying to shift focus away from the Xbox and onto their next system? Unless they plan on releasing PD0 in the next couple months... that's really likely....

we'll just have to wait and see. i'm pretty sure i'm right.

Strange, this is a next gen Rare game, he should have mentioned he was blown away by the graphics. The graphics should be like the 2nd coming.

Speaking of Rare's abilities, I just got my Conker preview code. It just continuously amazes me how incredible this game looks. This is the closest thing to a CG movie I've ever seen in a game. The way the lighting interacts with the characters is just about perfect. Everything fits perfectly together so nothing stands out.
Except for the shadows that are not really perfect for moving objects, Rare totally nailed this engine. Ken Lobb was right, this could very well be the most beautiful game on Xbox, ever.

Yeah it looks good, but I'm much more impressed by the lighting and overall texture quality. And also the drawing distance, like when you are on top of the barn with the water tank. Wow.
