The Allegory is a great site. Glad to see it's still around, I need to put it in the OP.

And maybe that, too.

I love Soejima, but he's still not quite up to that Kaneko style.

Dug up a little bit more about Philemon from the characters section on this Persona 2 Innocent Sin super site:

I'm spoilering one of the sentences in the next section because I know some GAFfers are very sensitive to spoilers, although I don't think it's anything that will spoil the story:

Interesting. I always saw Philemon as an odd-one-out of Persona 1/2 and SMT, interesting to know they had a reason for him.

Also makes the "secret" at the end of IS make sense.

Also no one answered my "does the fusion spell keep all of them" question!

It does. Crisis averted.

But I need the answer key, still. >_>

Get it from Mu. Sorry I couldn't be around to answer your questions today.

Looks like you guys did just fine.

I've been playing off and on during my free moments. I'm pleased with the translation overall, although "Cuss High" still strikes me as awkward since real teenagers would never be so tame when insulting a rival school.

I'm up to Aoba Park, taking a break since I got lost in Giga Macho as usual even though this is my sixth time through the game. The encounter rate feels higher, probably due to the movement speed increase, but it doesn't bother me too much.

Ohhhhh. Right.

You can get the masks there despite screwing up the questions? What the hell do I need to answer the questions right for, then?

Also, I kinda wish the battle quotes were comically censored just as a tribute to Eternal Punishment.

I'm surprised Yukino is saying "shit" since she's a lot more tamer in the fan translation.

No no no, you can get the solving orb/answer key for combos there.
Sorry for the confusion.

Anyhow, here's a picture of the one Tamaki Uchida was based on:

Ooooh. Okay, well the contact guide at that fansite is good enough for me. :lol I just need to know what to answer at certain points for the masks again since I've lost the old fantranslation wiki. :(

For the customs, let most of them solve their own problems. One of the decisions is a trick though...

Well, she is an ex-gang member. Some things were a lot harsher in the FT; one NPC dropped the f-bomb when complaining about tickets to the Kasu High thing.

Okay, so the girl asking

affects nothing.

True. But she seems a lot more mature/etc. in the fan translation to me. *shrug* Dunno how to describe it. It isn't a bad thing, just weird seeing her doing that after the fan translation.

Playing the PS1 version and I don't know what's with this game but everything in it gives me quite a feeling of nostalgia for some reason. As if I had played the game long ago, but I only started playing it earlier this year. I dunno, maybe I'm just crazy lol

Anyway I'm at Mt. Katatsumuri and am given the option to either confront the enemy directly or take the mountain path. Guess I'll have to grind a few levels or get new personas because I can't beat the enemies when choosing the former, and I already tried taking the long path but ended up getting lost in there.

Hrm.

About 7 hours in and while I'm enjoying it so far, I kind of wish they did a little more with the port -- maybe something like the forma system from SMT Strange Journey, something to spice up the dungeon crawling. Or at least getting an item for filling up the map. A little tweak to just make the game more interesting. I'm sure it would be heresy to alter the game that dramatically, but it really does need an extra oomph. I recently played P2: EP, and maybe that's why I wish they did more?

Also, why the hell did they not keep Kaneko's designs? I like Soejima as much as the next guy, but come on. I would have loved it if they kept Kaneko's art and gave it an HD finish. Kaneko > Soejima.

That said, the game is still pretty enjoyable, and it's fun to see how it links to EP.

I kind of liked Maya more when she didn't talk...

Soejima did the faces in the original in-game on PSX anyway. They at least attempted to have it be a cross between the out-of-game Kaneko art and Soejima's.

I thought Maya made an awesome protagonist, but you have to admit silent doesn't fit her. It does fit Tatsuya.

Did not realize that. While the in-game faces aren't bad, I would've loved Kaneko's artwork splashed across my psp.

This is true, but I figure her new found silence and change in attitude is a result of what happens in IS.

I don't think Kaneko's ever done 'dynamic'(re: changing expression) art for a game. That's why SJ's portraits are all static. With Soul Hackers and Innocent Sin; he did the concept art, but all the portraits are more anime style so they can do more expressions.

I wish they'd do another Nocturne game that keeps his style intact, but that doesn't seem too likely anymore.

Hey, I've got a few questions if anyone can answer them:

1) Does anyone know why Amazon has P2:IS under review?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00523VFJU/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Was something wrong?

2) Does every physical copy come with all of the extra goodies like shown in the amazon image, or was that only for preorders?

3) I only played like... 2 hours of P1P... should I still buy this? Is it a better game?
It is a dramatically better game in every way.

The real question is, can you handle that it still doesn't play anything like Persona 3/4?

If you're cool with that, then you should be fine. The plot is fantastic. But the battles still chug a bit and the dungeons are weak. But the plot and the characters are fantastic.

I've found the dividing line is really how much people are expecting P3/P4. I personally am cool with P2. It doesn't drag NEARLY as bad as P1, so I'm not feeling like I'm playing a *crappy* 90s game, just a 90s game.

Wish I hadn't blown the plot for myself a few years ago, but the good side is, the writing holds up enough that I can still enjoy the plot even when I know most of the twists.

Also, it sounds like Troy Baker is voicing Michel?

I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to think it will happen eventually. They finally got Catherine out of their system, why not hope they're ready to turn out a proper console follow-up to the original franchise that makes them money?

...I mean besides Persona :p

ARTBOOKS

There are two artists responsible for Persona 2. Kazuma Kaneko is responsible for those wonderfully stylized character designs for Persona 2 (as well as for the majority of the older Megaten games). Shigenori Soejima did the "bust-ups" or the in-game art for Persona 2, before taking over character design duty for the Persona series and other Atlus games (Persona 3, Persona 4, Trauma Center, Catherine, etc.) His style was a little different between Persona 2 and Persona 3; the re-release of Persona 2 seems to be trying to find a happy medium between the two.

Which is correct. The portraits in P2:IS PSX are a lot "smoother" and more anime styled. While here they're a bit pixel-y/rough around the edges (I guess due to uprezzing from 4:3 to 16:9?) and less smooth/anime. It's noticeable.

Holy shit. They weren't kidding around with the theater. :lol Second option in there starts you in a battle against a level 40 enemy. Been using the defaults personas and weapons? He can block block block and then promptly reflect your attacks. Insane.

Also I continue to suck with the casino in all SMT that feature it. :(

Do you remember which rumor you passed for the Casino?

Okay, I tried my first Persona game - P3P - on GAF recommendation just last year, and I LOVED IT! Just a great JRPG, imho, so I decided to go with P2:IS on release... Well, it took me a while to get into it, but I've got maybe 15 hours into the game now (level ~ 22 - ya, I'm slow!) and I'm starting to feel like I'm understanding the systems. I got the rumour mechanics pretty quickly so I've been doing a lot of OCD talking with every character I see, and I've been keeping notes on the responses I sus out for getting the demons to give me cards or make a pact with me and give me items so that I can sort of balance the dungeons between card acquisition and level grinding. However, I only just replaced my original maxed out persona's with some newly called, more powerful ones and then ran off to the abandonned factory to grind them up a bit...

I've got a couple questions I'd like to ask:

First, how important is it to ask demons you have pacts with for information? I haven't done that yet, but I've noticed that when you're at the Detective Agency you can view information on rumours from demons, so I'm wondering if I should get on that and go regrind some pacts with lower demons to get good rumours I may have missed...

Second, should I be switching persona's frequently? Is it worth returning them in the Velvet Room for the cards and items you get? I don't need to see or use ALL of them - I'm far more interested in the story than being really completionist with the collecting - but I don't want to get stuck because I haven't earned high-level persona's either...

um, I think that's it for now... It was a slow build but I'm hooked on the characters and story now...

Demons will give you rumors about the dungeons you are in and are often the only way to reach secret areas (like the employee room in the factory) or they talk about the ultimate weapons.

And you should switch Personas when their levels start lagging behind your character's, even if the new P's stats are lower, it pays off to have better spells.

To kinda piggyback on this question, if there's a demon rumor available in a dungeon, can I just make a pact with any demon in that dungeon and ask for information, or will I need to find a specific demon who will spill the beans? I'm in Cuss High and haven't been able to get any info from demons so far.

I had trouble with the casino the first few times I tried it. I spread the rumor about the slots being easy to win, so I always bought 100 coins and then played the slots until I ran out.

After I got Pixie to rank 8, her luck stat jumped to 99, which brought Tatsuya's luck stat up to 60. It may have been a coincidence, but the first time I played the slots with the rank 8 Pixie equipped, I ended up getting 2000 coins somehow. I still don't understand how it happened, but I'm not complaining. I need to go back and spend some more time there.

Well, Poker is the only one that was available, AFAIK.

"Rumormonger Toku-san

It seems they offer real gambling at Mu. The rumor is that poker is the easiest game to win."

Also attempted the first movie at the theater. It's easy at level 5 provided you know what to say/do for cards (got 20 Tower cards, FFS. Insane) or Yen since if you do it right after Sevens you're too low in level for Pacts (but hey, 1000+ yen a pop isn't something to sneeze at).

But if you do get a contact wrong... whoo-boy, you're going to be dead. Maya was the last one standing against forgetting the demon and doing 3 damage a pop on hard with her guns to where she couldn't deal damage fast enough. :(

I'm sure it's possible to beat the first one at level 5, with the right Persona and equipment set-up, but I'm not yet ready to take that on it seems. Maybe I need to gamble at Mu so I can know the answers or was that only for Fusions?

were that always so :) . while it's true much of the time, i'm finding quite a few of the 'upgrades' (i'm in the mid-20s now, & have been getting every persona available, except for some card ones) aren't really as useful (even when maxed) as the ones i'm letting go. particularly when it comes to single target vs group/area spells...

also have to say, without auto-combat, this game would be extremely tedious sometimes, considering the size of some of these dungeons. &, speaking of extremely tedious, why the necessity to 'confirm' when choosing who negotiates, considering you can just back out? really don't get that one...

i'm definitely having fun, but i think the early persona games, more so than any other megaten games i've played, epitomize the concept of 'acquired taste' :) ...

Because you can use two-three of the characters in a negotiation. See: Tatsuya and Michel(le) contacting a pixie.
