Persona 5 Review Thread

Play P3 FES, seriously.

Like in P4 the entire world is 3D instead of wallpapers (the only thing 3D in P3 Portable is the dungeons, the visually most bland and boring part of the game), the game actually has all the Anime cutscenes (which are awesome and are completely cut from the Portable Version), bunch of extra content similarly to Golden for P4 and a 10 hour epilogue on top of it.

The only thing Portable offers is full direct party control (unnecessary because the tactic system Works well enough if you actually bother changing tactics which doesn't take more time than direct commands anyway) and the option to Play as female Main character which is best done as a second playthrough anyway.

Boggles my mind that people recommend Portable over FES for newcomers, they lose Out massively when it comes to presentation (like Most of the game taking place in an actual, breathing 3D world instead of static pictures) and the Anime cutscenes when Portable is much better experienced as a second playthrough by its very Nature.

Amen. Also you can turn some Personas into awesome weapons in FES. Converted Thor into Mjölnir and kicked so much ass with it.

Calling the handful of small, simple backdrops in P3 a breathing world is being exceedingly generous.

I do agree that the presentation is better but I do not think you lose much and that as an overall product P3P was more enjoyable. For me it flowed better, played better and I liked the addition of the boy/girl select.

Either way, it's a faithful, comfortable experience on either platform and the way people drop gasps and awe over conversation with it have always confused me.

P3 and FES had anime cutscenes. P3P didn't. Which is a pretty big reason I get these games honestly.

I more than agree with this post, but so many people are use to this series being portable especially if they started with P4G.

I couldn't get into P3P at all, this post just convinced me to try FES though before writing off Persona 3 as a whole.

Definitely! I asked myself the same question with Persona 4. Changed my life lol.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.

Yes, yes, and yes!

Playing the previous games is not required to enjoy this. They're standalone stories.

Hey question... sorry if this is redundant.

My wife is not a HUGE gamer, but she is knowledagable about all of it and loves the medium. She loves Mass Effect, 999, Professor Layton ect. a lot. I'm not sure if she would be a big JRPG fan, but she's obsessed with Japan and its culture (studio ghibli ect).

Would she like this? Is it bad coming into the series at #5?

THANKS!

Well this answers one of my Q's thanks!

I hope the huge number of Persona newcomers I keep seeing ask about this game are planning on posting their impressions in the OT.

Newcomer impressions about beloved media give me life. :p

You can, it's a 99.9% standalone story.

Edit: damn, I must have had my tab open for a while.

It's definitely not. It was one of the first pieces of concrete info Atlus revealed about the game.

Oh, cool. I didn't play my first Persona game until a month ago, so I missed most of the lead up to this. I'm not sure what's been revealed and what's a secret.

I'm also already 28 hours into the game, which makes me want to be extra cautious.

Arguably 2/3rds of the total game time is managing your character's life and schedule while living in Shibuya.

In some ways, it's the closest you can get to a "an exciting year living in Japan (plus demons)" sim game.

Her enjoyment is as sure a bet as they come. The game can also be set to crazyballs easy if she's only in there for the story and isn't into the battle system.

Grrr, so jealous. Been waiting for new mainline Persona since I beat P4 on December 24, 2008, and nobody in my city is breaking the release date because the only small game stores here sell retro shit, so I'm stuck waiting until Tuesday. :( I've been following this fucking game since that 2013 stream when we got the chair teasers lol.

Awesome! Ok thanks for the explanation. I'll be picking this up.

I never said BRSxIgnition failed, I said we as a community failed.

It's a reference that actually has relevance to Persona 5 itself. On top of that, we cut out every single OT that referenced the delays because all it would to is bring up hostility and shit up the thread.

Just had to say I was introduced to the series via P3P, went on to platinum P4G, and still prefer Persona 3. While the simplified navigation is not why it's my favorite entry, I actually think it has its own cool look that I would guess holds up better than early PS2 persona environments. Would have appreciated the Anime cutscenes, but the music, tone, and story is still on point.

I know it's hard for some of you who played FES first, but it really should be just as fine as an entry point.

If your wife likes Japanese culture then she may LOVE persona 5. Takes place in
Tokyo, Japan
and you adhere to the daily life of a Japanese high school student. Where you can
hangout with your friends, get a part time job, spend time at the arcade , go fishing, rent DVDs
play retro games, exercise, do launtry, get lost in Tokyo,
and if you want, start a romantic relationship, oh and do the actual dungeons to progress the story, I guess...

The games are run on a calendar system where you have a set amount of time to accomplish what you wanna do on which ever day.

sorry, but, imo, while a genuine 'professional' might indicate they'd personally prefer a game to be portable, they certainly wouldn't criticize it, or rate it lower, for not being so :) ...

She went into detail about this on twitter. While she really enjoyed the game, there were things that bothered her about it, and she thought that perhaps she would not have been as bothered by those things had she been able to play on the go.

That's why she mentioned it in the review, and why she put the caveat in there when she started to talk about it.

Don't worry about spoilering those, they're well known and will even be in the OT.

Sitting down in front of a tv for a long session feels drastically different than bite sized experiences on a portable, and it certainly feels different after coming from P3P and P4G, and a trend of jRPGs moving to the vita in general.

I thought this was an extremely reasonable issue for her to mention, and I'm saddened to see so many people single her out and get hung up on it for a miniscule percentage of a score that is added to a massive aggregate.

Don't care for the score and I mean sure it's certainly an ok opinion but I don't know if I'd call it a reasonable issue . I mean like how would/should they have fixed it?

The Switch is basically the only machine that would have realistically managed to handle Persona 5 without compromising heavily on what the game is on the PS3/PS4.

Seems really unreasonable to me to put the lack of a Switch port on the dev team and hold it against the game when likely the Switch itself was still not finalized when they were already finishing up Persona 5. Like maybe I'm wrong but to me it certainly feels like the dev situation at the time wasn't prepared to handle the introduction of a Switch version.

So I don't know it comes off as mega unreasonable to make that part of the criticism towards the game when there's a real chance that this wasn't some kind of decision but more like a result of how the timings on all these things worked out.

I started playing then I am reminded that this is Persona game.... what seems like hours of intro and dialogues before the RPG part starts

And the main character's starting persona in P5 is named Arsene after the famous fictional thief.

On a tangent, the most recent TV series of Lupin III had a very stylish opening.

Holy crap, my desire to get into Lupin after seeing the Ghibli movie is only magnified now. Where do I start?

Sounds great!

Something I've been meaning to ask.

Wasn't the one of the main reasons the game was delayed from the initial February 14th release date to April 4th was because the inclusion of Japanese VA?

And yet, said Japanese VA isn't included on the disc and is for all intents and purposes a downloadable update later on?

So then what would have been so different to have this game release back in February to have a Japanese VA update in April. Wouldn't that have effectively did the same thing and not have the need for a delay in the first place?

Unless it was delayed for another reason entirely. I'm just trying to understand if they were releasing the product on the hold up of Japan VA being included in the English release yet it still being an a day one update, then what difference would it have made if they just simply released the Japanese VA as a free DLC instead?

These questions just set P5's release another month.

By coincidence, the fiscal accounting year for most companies ends with March.

A lot of high profile games this month are technically part of 2016's reporting, and Persona comes out right when the 2017 forecast starts.

Not saying that's a definitive reason which was never explicitly stated, but hmm.

April 4th is the first Tuesday of the next fiscal year. The delay was just a business decision, it's pretty obvious.

The delay was stupid and is made even more frustrating by the stock being shipped out so early and street dates being broken leading to those waiting for the 4th holding on for literally 0 reason.
