Persona 5 Review Thread

Guess Who

Banned
Now, I need to know one thing from those who are following this game very closely/already beat it : is the tone more like Persona 3 (aka, deep, dark, sinister and depressive), or Persona 4 (aka, weaboo shit, idolmaster-y and everyone is happy) ?

I'm trolling ofc, I like Persona 4 too but I never quite enjoyed it as much as Persona 3 due to the overall tone of the game

From what I've heard and seen, it's darker than Persona 4, but in less of an "everything's gloomy and blue and a metaphor for death" sense like Persona 3 and more of a "wow this game deals with some heavy subject matter" sense.

It's dark, but much in a much more 'real' way than Persona 3 ever was, judging by feedback on this kind of question thus far.

Woah......dat meta.

Never played a persona before.

Need to dust off my PS4.
You'll have an amazing ride. In persona you won't be playing a game. You'll be meeting new friends and taking a journey with them... And you won't know how much you care about them till you end it and feel that emptiness they always leave behing...

I'm frequently puzzled by Jim Sterling's taste. I'm mega hyped for this game but after so many great and LONG games I've played recently I'm holding onto this one for the future. I'm glad to see it's amazing as we thought it would be.

It's confusing considering you'd expect a review on the Jimquisition to be written by him, but it wasn't. It's Laura Kate Dale and that's written at the top of the review. Still baffling that apparently the game not being portable (read, every new game not released on Switch or 3DS, so not a fair criticism) seemingly was enough to drop the score a lot given the praise and relative lack of other complaints she had. Oh well.

Assumed permanent, as Japanese version still has it 6 months after launch.

That boost from glorious reviews.

Well they sure have got me interested. I haven't turned on my ps3 in a long time though.

Point taken I only briefed it. Took for granted he wrote it. I agree with you thought it not being portable should not have bared so heavily on the review score.

Yeah no problem, just a little funny is all. And yeah, I am not one to rag on review scores being incongruous with the actual text, but 8.5 does not match the level of praise she gave it so I can only imagine the lack of portability is the reason for the drop in a half point or so. I feel like this is only a valid complaint if the game was on Switch and functioned poorly in undocked mode, otherwise is it alright to dock a point or so from every new game that isn't made by Nintendo? I understand the feeling of something being missing after Golden, but it just isn't very fair. No big deal, but disappointing nonetheless, not gonna throw a fit over it like many did over BotW's review. Those complaints were more valid anyways, since they are reviewing the game for what it is, not what it could have been (on another platform entirely).

Edit:

I hate that this is coming out the same year as Zelda and Nier.

GOTY thread will be a BLOODBATH I tell you.

Yeah, I feel like some outlets should just refrain from Game of the Year lists, and maybe just make Games of the Year lists instead, lol. At least in this year, it's too much to decide. Even though I feel BotW is probably deserving of many awards, I worry it will dominate too much, everything deserves recognition. Funny how front loaded this year seems to be too, it's probably because of so many things being pushed over from late 2016, I worry people will forget all about Nier Automata by the end of the year, and if Mario Odyssey really comes out this year, will MO get more attention than BotW just because it'll be coming out closer to awards season?

Well said. I think as well the score , personally anyway , should have bared on the quality of game and not the desire of its functionality when it was never a proposed idea to begin with. The game quality is off the chain so it puzzles me to see such praise and then almost a harsh slap across the face for something never offered or promise concerning its origin. I would love to see it on Switch some day but I won't not buy it for instance because it hasn't been announced as such. I think we are both on the same wavelength In our personal opinions of that score and reasoning for it.

Seems like reviews had slown down probably because almost all outlets that got review code already put out their review.

We all know it will be Zelda or RDR2 if it comes out this year.

Yeah, it'd also be a bit more fair of a criticism of the series was traditionally portable, rather than having two portable adaptations years after the 3rd and 4th entries. If Nintendo released a new mainline Pokemon at some point (no Colloseum or XD) and it for some reason was never released on portable systems that'd be a little weird since it is a series staple, but Persona has never been primarily portable.

I can say if I made a game like this (or honestly any kind really), I'd be disappointed that someone docked it for lacking something that was never promised or even possible on the target hardware. I agree it'd be awesome to get an enhanced edition for PS4+Switch, but the game is what it is, and it's too bad that it seemingly got a score determined by considering what it never claimed to be. It is what it is I guess, just odd.

Lol I know you're joking but

P3 fans are really loud about P4 sheesh. Feels like I see more P3 fan/P4 haters than I do just P4 fans.

I really think you could take games just from the first few months of this year, and have enough to replace every GOTY winner since this gen started. That's just insane.

You're seeing wrong then. A lot more obnoxious loud posts about P4, P4G, and the various spinoffs through my entire time here.

Persona fandom in general can get pretty bad.

from review:

Honestly, I only have one major gripe with Persona 5, and it's a gripe that I'm not sure is unfair or not. A big part of my ability to invest as much time as I did into Persona 4 Golden was due to it being playable on the Vita, a portable system, and Persona 5 being locked to home consoles (PS3 and PS4) does somewhat hamper my ability to integrate it into my life. While I usually want to be playing the game's big sprawling dungeons on a TV, the slow intricate social life management sections of Persona are honestly perfect fodder for playing on the sofa while watching TV or on a quick bus ride to pass the time.

As someone who has spent a lot of time with the Switch recently, and who loved the hell out of the Vita during that year or two it was getting regular games released on it, I really did find myself at times wishing this game had some kind of portable version. It just felt like the social life aspects of the game might have been more at home when I experienced them on the Vita in P4G.

um, reviewer? you do realize that both p3 & p4 were ps2 games initially? & that it was only because they were so successful that we got the portable versions?...

iow, in answer to your question? yes, you're being completely, totally unfair. are you seriously going to criticize a book because it's only available in hardcover, & you prefer soft? :) ...

I've never played a Persona game and I hate games like Final Fantasy and most JRPGs etc - is this one of those games that just isn't up my alley?

I remember popping into the community thread a few times, and there was at least one omnipresent poster that was really quick to slap down anyone's enthusiasm for P3/P4 in favor of the "real" Persona games.

Though I guess that continual undercutting of opinions is par for the course for most anime fandoms.

I mean, that's very little info to determine whether you'd like the game or not. What do you not like about those games? This doesn't follow many of the genre's tropes like expansive worlds and fantasy settings, but it has turn-based battles and is very long and story-heavy. So, I dunno? Watch some videos and see if they appeal to you?

There's also another poster who was doing the same in regards to P5, undercutting it in relation to past games, but they've thankfully been mostly silenced with these reviews.

It's just not needed, really. They're all good games.

Well you see you might start playing it and you might start liking it or you could hate it. It goes either way.

What JRPG do yo not hate?

Honestly the only ones I've played and thought were 'ok' are FFX and Chrono Trigger. That being said, I didn't finish either and didn't particularly enjoy them - they just weren't awful.

The thing is I see a game rated so highly and it just tempts me in, even if they're not my style of game. The same happened with Bloodborne, which even though I can tell it's incredible, I can't stand the damn thing.

If you genuinely *hate* the genre, then P5 probably isn't going to be your cup of tea, but it depends on what specifically you hate about JRPGs.

If you dislike turn-based combat, then yeah, P5 isn't for you.

If you dislike anime/manga influences, I'd say Persona in general handles them in a fairly endearing way. It's not a bombardment of tropes like you see elsewhere. The series places more emphasis on character development and thematic dynamics than the average JRPG series.

Beyond that, I have a sneaking suspicion that someone who dislikes JRPGs probably won't be on-board for the social simulator aspects of the game, so that's another thing.

You might like the fusing Personas and demon negotiation aspects, but I don't know if that would be enough to sell you.

I wasn't really too big on JRPGs before I checked out Persona 4 but I think I enjoyed it way more than I expected to because of it's hardcore focus on story and characters and overall mood and style. Those games have really great atmospheres that kind of just..suck you in.

So do we all agree that P5 is probably the end of the hot streak? Zelda, Nier, Horizon and this all coming out in ~1 month window, nothing else this crazy good coming out in the next little bit?

If so, it's a hell of a way to end it, plus, it helps that it's a longer game too.

You might be right but for me it resumes in june with Tekken 7. But as far as RPGs are concerned I think you're right.

Cosmic Star Heroine is out pretty soon. Prey and Injustice 2 are out in May. ARMS should be out within the next two months. There's Wipeout Omega Collection and Crash in June. And then Shadow or War in August.

Your mileage may vary but May is Prey, Fire Emblem Echoes and Rime 3 titles I could see have potential.
