A few years ago Russel Brand got banned from BBC because he sent abusive 'joking' voice mail messages to the guy who played Manuel on fawlty towers, who is an old man. I really like Russel Brand but even I had to say fair play.

I don't think it's unreasonable for the same to happen to PDP.

Why shut it down when you can make money? Column A is the personality saying vile shit + people defending it. Column B are the people calling it out and doing a teardown of the personality/defenders. Both exist on the same platform, both raking in views.

Advertisers can't completely abandon it, too much money left on the table. There's no end.

Pretty easy. The major services (Twitch, Youtube) just need a good report system for it. At the start you will need a ton of man hours to manage that, but after a while when people know they get banned right away (and you need some additional info to sign up, like sms confirmation) it will get less and less.

People can click report. System will look at the few minutes before and after report, parse the voice. If racial slurs detected, move to top of the line, otherwise bottom to manually check later. More reports, is higher position for manual check.

These are Google and Amazon we are talking about, they can come up with a solution and have the resources.

Honestly, or of all the kerfuffle, the main problem is this, at least for me in terms of defending PewDiePie:

- if he said: "yo, my n***", or "n*** you crazy", or just used the word to address someone, it'd be a mistake and rude but with an apology, and recognition I'd be cool with letting it slide. I wouldn't call it necessarily racist.

- however, saying n*** instead of asshole is racist. There's I'll intent involved and the word is used as a slur. The guy is swedish and this shouldn't be the first insult that should come into his head. In fact, he shouldn't be using the word at all in this context. What's next on the list: gay, retarded, disabled?

Screw PdP, there's nothing to defend here. Even if he's influenced by people online constantly using these insults, he should be fighting against it with his reach and influence. Instead he just perpetuates the cycle and makes it worse.

Youtube and Twitch are pretty much the only viable platforms for content creators (with Facebook coming up)

They're businesses, and as such they can decide what does and doesn't go on their platform. People upload a million videos every day, but there can be some serious vetting and moderation - say if a channel has so many subscribers or views, then they get looked into (save them looking at everything immediately) as well as solid reporting systems.

You knock out a platform for this kind of content, it'll disappear

My 14-year-old daughter likes PewDiePie - among other YouTubers - so we're going to be having an interesting conversation about this at some point. Should be a fairly straightforward chat though, as she can grasp what a fair few people seem unable to understand - that "nigger" is an inexcusable thing to say, and using it does make you a racist prick - but I'm a bit sad she's been let down by someone she enjoys watching.
