PGR3 Review Thread

WOW I promised myself I'd never be so easily swayed by one review, no less one from 1UP, but I'm impressed. A flawless videogame!? Sweet!

Honestly, awesome games like this would swallow up all my free time anyhow. I know now to continue avoiding a 360 purchase.
 
I played the game and it was by far the closest thing to a killer app the 360 has at launch, but a fucking ten?

Let's all come back to this thread in two years and ask ourselves if this is one of the top five or six videogames of all time.
 
i want to download the hardware roundtable on 1up because it's skipping every 3 seconds. Anybody got a link?

Well...when a new console launches, games tend to be overrated...especially when it marks a new gen like this. So it wouldn't surprise me if people look back in two years and say "well, maybe it wasn't 10/10 amazing, but still damn good!" or something. Always been that way, with some exceptions. But I'm still sure it's a great game. :)

Halo and M64 were 10 games at launch, this industry and majority of people still regard it as one of finest gaming entries in history.

Wait for GS score anyway

in order for a 10 PGR would have to be the GREATEST racer of all time, bar none.

I cant imagine even the greatest racer garnering a 10, therefore this is bullshit either way you cut it

So you're saying you think PGR3 is on the same plane of significance as M64 and Halo?

Because if that's true, then you've definitely been completely engulfed into the 360 fanboy camp. No fucking way.

No it doesn't. 10 stands for genius, not greatest of all time. Thinking in absolute is very limiting, hence comments like "It's not perfect" is abitary and asinine in hindsight since there is no focal point in real world to make such a obtuse comparitive statement.
 
Microsoft needs some killer apps...so that's why I don't trust these seemingly pandering game reviews. That reviewer didn't make such a great case for the game. It's made for people who like to be told what to think. What else is new.

Yeah, it's clearly gushy, but it doesn't do much to convince anyone not already sold that this game is incredible. Surely, it's a great game, but I really can't get over how people are willing to nod willingly at this flagrant "10" throw out there. If this weren't a console launch, you'd hear a lot more skepticism.

You're talking like every game is getting these incredibly high reviews. You need to look around.

I think it's fine. That's just the way launch games are and anyone intelligent realizes that and takes it into consideration. I mean Sonic Adventure was a 10/10 at many places but does it still hold up at that score? Not really, but it was absolutely amazing at the time.

that should be read as "video (direct-feed of the game), along with written reviews." we have the desire to do video reviews, but not the manpower at the moment.

PGR3 is really really good -- deserving of a 10 for some.

Well that'd make things a wee bit obvious, now wouldn't it?

It's clear and has been to me since I'd played the main games from the launch line-up that PGR3 is the only thing even close to a killer-app in this lineup. I have a feeling that journalists who've been close to this lineup for any period of time have all come to that consensus as well.

The reality is that every launch needs a killer app title in the minds of the journalist houses and the fanboys, and for every single launch journalists will rate one as the killer-app: whether it's deserving of it or not.

I'd say this call lands much closer to a Sonic Adventure sort of 10/10 than a Mario 64 or a Halo one. While it's certainly a great game, I think that we should all be much more resistant to this clear launch game inflation syndrome.

Yes I have played it, and unless there's some super secret thing about this game that makes it totally unlike every other racer ever made in the history of games, I somehow doubt that the experience changes so dramatically at hour 30 from hour 2 that any play impressions of this title could be misleading.

And how the hell does "deserving a 10 for some" justify giving it a 10 for all of us. If a game isn't going to be the cup of tea to 95% of gamers out there, it shouldn't even qualify for a 10. In keeping with the traditions of this language, you've implied that the game is deserving of a 10 for less than half of your audience.

Going by what you said, the game absolutely should have received a lower score. Or at least an indication of how good a game it is for the non-10-some out there. You know, most of the gamers, going by your statement.

I mean I'm sure in time all across the net we'll see reviews that we felt were seriously overrating games, but why are you forming this conclusion this second for a game I assume you have not put any serious playtime into?

Yeah, I did play it. And I was really, really impressed with it. By far the best 360 game of the six or seven I played last weekend. But by no means was it one of the best games of all time. I think it's a great game, but to call it a genre-defining game of genius is absolutely ludicrous.

I always thought that a review was supposed to present the opinion of the author, not the readers. Maybe it's a cultural thing.
 
Most great racers seem to get 9-ish scores. Add in a deep online mode (which PGR3 has, right?), and it gets bumped to a 10. I don't think the score is that unfathomable. The only question now is if PGR3 is truly great, or if it's a case of "it's good enough and it looks gorgeous".

So you played it in a weekend. Did you beat it? Play it for an extensive time period? I'm just trying to gauge your point here. My point is that I'm fairly certain this reviewer spent more time with the game than you and I, and that he might actually genuinely feel this way. Whether down the line this will be considered "overrating" is one thing, but why do we care? A great game is a great game. Does it matter if it's overrated if it's great?

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say... that a reviewer has to score games based on how he predicts his readers will feel about the game?

When I said the game is deserving of a 10 for some, I was referring to this particular reviewer and potentially many others. The reviewer stated very clearly why he felt PGR3 is one of the greatest driving games of all time. You think it's ludicrous -- good for you?

I agree with you and you're right. But I do feel like it does matter at least to the extent that my point is that I'm sick of seeing inflated launch review scores at every system launch. So it does matter to an extent in that context, but in the grand scheme of things, no it doesn't.

hey, you and me both. but it's just a pointless thing to harp on now, because it's not like PGR3 is somehow less great than really fucking awesomely great ;)

More specifically to keep slightly on topic, I've never liked the PGR/MSR games so I'm wondering if PGR3 would be any different for me.
