Photoshop Problem... Likely a Simple Answer

Lately I've had this problem in Photoshop CS... When I try to save for web, the colors that result are different shades than what I've created in the program. Dark blues look very faded for example.

I have no idea what might have caused this. I thought it might have been some Color Profile issue, but I've had no luck.

Any ideas?

"Save For Web"... any file type that can be utilized through that method: GIF, PNG or JPG.

"Save As" and then picking the type I want results in the same problem.

I'm not sure if this is the correct answer, but when choosing colors, make sure you are using "web only" colors in the pallette/color picker. Otherwise, when saving for the web, i think it'll just pick a similar color.

I've never had this problem before, though. I've saved so much for web and this is just a recent issue.

Web only colors should only be an issue if I was using hex colors within HTML and was using Photoshop to come up with a design, at least from what I remember.

Post the original and I'll see if I can replicate what's going on.

er...and an example of the FUBARed output. What I'll do is see if I can tweak the "Save to Web" settings and see if I can get the same FUBARed output.

I just threw this together because this problem seems most obvious with blues.

I can't really post the original because what is shown within the program is a more of a navy blue, while what is show in the save as window (and the resulting file) is a more faded color.

But here is the image that results if I save for web: http://img19.exs.cx/img19/600/simple1.jpg

When you do "Save to Web", look to the right and there should be a box that says "Colors". Set it to something really small like 2 and then back to whatever you want (mine's set to 256) and then see what happened.

Photoshop uses a lot more colours than any file types can handle. That's what I've seen in my experience. Some ways around it.. I don't know, maybe adjusting the light/dark levels in the hue/saturation menu manually will register better on the palet of the file type you pick.

No change in the blue at all, The Shadow.

As for the post above me, I honestly have never had problems with things this simple. I mean, the sample image here is only like 8 colors at the max and it's still not saving the correct hues.

If worse comes to worse, I guess I can dig out my package and uninstall then reinstall and see what happens...

I had a problem like this when saving to web with PNG files in Photoshop 6.
The colours would shift to a darker shade. Saving to web with JPEG or GIF would be fine, just not PNG.

I never did figure out what was going on, sadly.

I had this problem in Photoshop 7, not in CS though.

ITs your colour settings, when you start photoshop it asks you to choose a color profile, as when you're working, it will be different than what you save.

My problem was my stuff was coming out DARKER than my working files, some simple tweaking of which colour profile I was using did the trick.

Change those around and see what happens.

Bugger. Can't get it to do the same thing. It probably is a color profile setting though, like the above poster suggested.

Yeah, as I said in the first post, that's what I thought it was... but nothing has really worked. I set the image to Adobe RBG as well as my general color profile. There's been no difference...

I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling and see what happens.

Thanks a lot for your help so far, I really appreciate it.

i've had the problem about three times in the past four years. The first two times, it was a conflict between PS6 and Illustrator 8 (9?) because they used the same profile. i had to close all both apps, delete my color profile in the a system folder, then let each app recreate a profile.

The last time it happened, i couldn't find a fix to it. i tried everything i could find. i reinstalled PS again over the previous install, and everything was fixed. Not the best way to do it, but i knew i'd be reformating my hard drive so it didn't really matter.

While we're at it, what are the main differences between Photoshop 7 and CS? If there are enough changes and improvements, might be worth the upgrade for me. :)

Faster than 7. Way faster.

I've only used it at my University a couple times, but from the looks of it there's no dramatic changes in tools. Filters, maybe, jpeg compression.. you could find that out on the website, probably.

I just notice filtering takes a lot less time, and bootup takes much less, too.

I fixed it.

In save for web, I right clicked the image and this menu appeared.

It was set to "Uncompensated Color". I changed it to "Windows".

Problem solved.

Thanks for the help and comments everyone.
