Picture I took a couple years back, didn't think anything of it until I saw it full screen. It doesn't even come close to capturing what I saw though. I took a wrong turn and came across three feet deep water for miles, couldn't find it again to save my life.

I have a pretty similar photo to that, Grand Teton mountains?

I have no idea, but i'd guess they actually "came down".
Maybe the softer rock went down in time (with the wind and the water) leaving the harder one up, like that?

Likely a river there thousands (millions) of years ago that cut the rocks to those shapes.

Which is why they are thicker on top and skinny on the bottom.

Think you mistook this thread for the funny one.

Also, i can't believe so many people didn't notice the typo in the thread title, it's like the 1st thing i saw when this thread was still new!

Guessing here, but for a long time, people on the east coast did not believe the claims regarding the size of the giant redwoods and sequoias being found in California. This photo was probably taken to try to prove the size of these trees. Eventually, they cut one up and shipped it back to the east coast as proof.

If you've never made it to see the General Grant or General Sherman, they are truly awe-inspiring.

California Redwoods .. Sequoia trees. There are entire forests of trees like this all through northern California. Some even big enough to drive a car through! Most of these giants are several hundred years old.

Haha, history repeats itself.. (I'm from the East Coast)

Truly amazing picture though, looks like I need to plan a trip to CA. Thanks for the info and thanks to alphaNoid and Arjen as well. :)

Reminds me of this:

But I think that area is flooded now.

I was driving around Yellowstone at that time, so that's definitely a possibility. Such unbelievable landscapes over there. Definitely a place to visit before you die.

I'm strangely fascinated by these weapons. They're so awe-some, huge. Something straight out of Metal Slug.
