I discovered the truth to this ages-old debate a while back. Hot dogs and tacos aren't sandwiches while submarine sandwiches are, and it's because the sandwich lays on its side, while the dog and taco remain upright. If you pile shit on in a way that requires the food unit to remain upright lest it all spill out, it's not a sandwich.

But open faced sandwiches?
