Haven't seen much music elitism in this thread. Just some ignoramuses claiming Umbrella isn't the greatest song ever made, and some smart, enlightened, surprisingly well-spoken folks (me) telling the truth. Very sympathetic, all in all! You can thank me through personal messages or with Chablis at my door (preferably at 11 degrees).

I admittedly havent read the entire thread, but Ive seen several posts which seemed to be the music equivalent of "I only watch films from the Criterion Collection, anything else is trash!".

I only watch films/tv shows that don't involve time travel. If I do, I bitch and moan.

Haha had to say it. You're one of my favorites of the GAF Losties.

Radiohead isn't terrible most of the time (though the Harry Patch song was so mindbendingly awful it was an insult to the man's memory), they're just kind of boring.

Anyway, pretty happy to see the Mountain Goats make the list (twice!).

Meh, just let it go. It's just taste.

Kind of.

I don't expect to convert people when I get into arguments, but I think there is some objectivity to music.

In one thread I said Radiohead was better than Linkin Park
and muse
and I think that is a true, factual statement. A lot of it is taste, but you can't really say the Beatles were shit, either

Musical taste is a weird-ass thing. I don't even listen to new music really, just Tom waits, Bowie-iggy-eno-reed and dylan and stuff. I do like Joanna newsom so so much, and I definitely like wilco...but I guess those aren't exactly cutting edge :lol

Maybe not cutting edge, but you do like Newsom, who is so very easy to hate, at least voice wise. I love her though. I'm all about the story telling.

Just for the sake of dragging up an argument from the last page, go listen to the DFA remix of "Paper Planes" and tell me it's not a complete disaster almost entirely because it's missing the gun shots and cash registers. They're a critical part of that song's perfection.

No way dude, I love that remix! Is it okay if I post a copy I recorded from my 12''? I mean, it's a pretty obscure track.

EDIT: Never mind, it's on the Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack. That actually makes it's last.fm page somehow more entertaining.

I think Strawberry Jam just threw me off so much (in the best way possible), music-wise because it was so different from anything I'd ever heard. MPP is good, but it's like I expected that whole "holy shit this is fucking awesome" (bluntly) feeling to kick in again, when it just didn't.

How many people's first Animal Collective album is their favorite, so far? I could be way off.

Basically the fact that it fucking came out 7 months ago. There's no time to put it into perspective with the other nearly 10 years of music that's come out. I'd have less of a problem with this if it weren't such a ridiculously overrated album, but hey. :)

While I don't entirely agree with the 'everything is subjective!' idea, it's ridiculous to think that there are a handful of current musicians out there that are The Greatest, or The Beatles of Today. Just doesn't exist, especially since I've been listening to music from all over the world in the last decade.

PS I got into Animal Collective a few months ago and I'm seeing them live next week!

Feels is my first and my favorite. Grass is such a perfectly weird pop song. I was part of the hypetrain when MPP came out, and I listened to it to death. I don't think it's going to be at the top of my list at the end of the year, because it really doesn't have the same replay value as their previous albums. Although the awesome pop melodies are there, the sound of the album is so forcibly twee, grating, and cracked out. Taste makes me cringe.

Heh, even in this list Pitchfork's hate for Muse shines through.

Never understood how you can rate songs/albums or compose a top list of music released in 10 years. Isn't music something personal?

You could say the same of any other medium, but lists are fun so we keep doing them.

Music is not personal; there's no way any form of communication (any form of art) can be personal. There's no such thing as a musician or listener who has not had their taste shaped by influences.

But doesn't everyone have their favourite bands in a genre, how can you review a band's album if you don't like them or when they are a favourite? How do you rate music, what do you compare it with? ( In case of Pitchfork, it's probably Radiohead )

Does anyone actually care for reviews of music, don't you just buy what you like?

Not to mention that most critics have their head stuck up so far up their own arse that most of their reviews are terrible to read.

Well, a good publication assigns reviewers who are somewhat neutral, yet knowledgeable, to their subject. There's an interview with a couple of Artforum (one of the world's most credible art publications) reviewers in the book Seven Days in the Art World, and they said something like that they don't review shows by favourite, friend, disliked, or artists they find unfavourable.
A reviewer is comparing their subject to everything before it. And almost all sources of music are reviewed in some way, there is no avoiding it. Unless you digest absolutely every release (pretty much impossible), there is some factor that is censoring what you don't listen to. A source doesn't have to be explicitly reviewing something to be assigning some measure of value to it.

I agree that most critics are terrible, but not all. Reviewers like Pitchfork who overlook thousands of albums a year, but take the time to give every album by The Killers a poor review, are a waste of your time. But good publications, like The Wire, do exist.

I love the Wire and consider it kind of safely untouched by the Pitchfork crowd (and they have tons of undiscovered, truly independent music), but they just as guilty of writing abstract reviews that don't really tell me anything about the album. ;-)

You do not have to love a work of art or a style in order to criticize it, but you need to understand its attraction for someone who does... Criticism has no significance and no importance if it is not accompanied by understanding -- and that implies the comprehension of at least the possibility of love.

my favorite album of theirs is MPP and my first album I heard was Sung Tongs back in 2004. I saw them in support of that album and they played only two songs from it, the rest was from FEELS. before MPP, Feels was my favorite.
