Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I currently own a Sony 55w905 TV and I'm very pleased with it, I mean when I'm gaming or watching a 2D or 3D BR or Netflix, I have zero complaints with my TV. Before that, I owned a Sony 46w3000 (2007 - 2013) and it was also a great TV in my opinion.

Since it's 2016 and I bought my 905 at launch in 2013 (so 3 years) is it worth switching to a 4K TV or should I wait for one or two more years ? On one hand, 3 years lifespan for a 2200€ TV seems a little on the short side. On the other hand, I am caught in a 4K hype. I can't make up my mind.

Is there a real difference between 4K and 1080p on a 55" screen (I can't go higher than that due to physical constraints in my living room) ? Like the gap from SD to HD or is it something more subtle ? What should I do ?

Oh, I use a Xbox One, Xbox 360, a Dreamcast and an Xbox. I also own a Xbox One S 2TO which I currently don't use and a bdp-s790 blu ray player and 3D BR was the reason I switched for the 905 since my w3000 still worked perfectly (and still is) when I moved it to my bedroom.

Should I go OLED or stay with Sony ?

Thanks for your input.

Looks like Sony just updated quite a few '15/'16 models for Gaming in HDR.

http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1478601062

Rasmus Larsen (Founder & EIC) from flatpanelshd.com contacted LG for an official response on their Game Mode/HDR stance. Hopefully he can get something concrete out of them. It's in comments at the bottom of the article.

Rasmus replied with LG's response.

"I just heard back from LG but nothing official yet. LG cannot confirm or deny that an update is coming at this time :(

They've promised me an update on the matter later."

where do you go to find out? Their main page? or did EBAY notify you?

I looked on my Ebay page. They might have e-mailed but I use a different address for Ebay and rarely check it. Look at the auction description and it'll say it's shipped and you can click.

I mean this goes one of two ways.. Either they really did put in their diligence and they can't swing it for some or all of the models due to hardware.. Or it's simply not cost effective for them to do the development. Obviously the second one can be pressured by public perception and pressure.

Hopefully that's the case.

I guess it's also possible that a subset of their models have appropriate hardware and they fear the backlash of updating just some of them. With some companies I'd say they could also just give no fucks, but in this case LG seems to have been listening and improving their displays to meet expectations, including input lag.

Well, that's not great, but atleast its better than the LG Customer Service straight out denying its in the works for their 2016 line-up. So eh, I'll take it.

Another response from LG customer support. I guess it doesn't mean much, but whatevs:

LG said:
Thank you for your email regarding HDR and game mode. I’m sorry for the delay in my reply.

I can only apologise for the disappointment, due to the time that HDR takes to process the information this really isn't something that we can rectify at the moment. I have no time frame to give you but it is something that we are aware of and are working on at the moment. I can do nothing to change your mind but I hope to be able to give good news to customers in situations such as yours soon.

Thanks! Yeah it's through my best friend who works at a certain electronics retailer, so I know it's not a scam lol. And 35ms is pretty good. Also great to hear about that HDR gaming update. I've currently still got my 52" 1080p tv, so 75" 4K HDR is gonna be amazing! Can't wait for Scorpio...
Oh dude, that is incredible then!!! Go for it :D You're going to love it! 75" is such a massive jump from 52", it's going to be insane!

Until Scorpio comes out, regular games upscaled look amazing on Sony sets, you're going to love it!

Hey so another question, this one regarding HDMI 2.0a and HDR.

So I read I need HDMI 2.0a to get 4k/60 and HDR. Now ive come to understand that "2.0a" actually refers to a device's HDMI port, not the actual cable itself. If this true/correct? If so, does that mean I just only need any HDMI cable with a speed of 18Gbps or more to be good for HDR? (Assuming my TV and AV Receiver will both have 2.0a ports, which they will.)

If so, will I be good for HDR on these 6-foot AmazonBasics High Speed HDMI cables from Amazon? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014I8SSD0/?tag=neogaf0e-20 Latest standard, 18Gbps, 4k/60, etc...

I got the two-pack version of those and they work fine with 4k and HDR on my PS4, TV and receiver.

Panel lottery is panel lottery. Having said that, though, the P-Series seems to have more instances of this issue.

How did you end up offloading your P-Series? Were you in the return window?

You won the panel lottery! Thumbs up!

I bought from Costco.ca. I had 90 days.

So as a general rule, are there any TVs in the 55-70" range that have respectable gaming characteristics, or do they all pretty much suck input lag wise?

For OLED's? Or any panel type?

Samsung definitely has respectable input lag.

If I go for a new TV it will be between the Samsung KU6300 or the Sony X800D. Wanted to get an opinion on if it's worth spending the extra cash on the Sony in my set up. I do not plan on buying a PS4 Pro, an Xbox One S or Scorpio. I will not be buying a 4k UHD Blu Ray player. I do not have the premium Netflix service. Uses will be to watch movies and sports on cable, and to play some regular PS4 and Switch. I don't upgrade my TV's very often. I have only bought two TV's in say the last 10-12 years or so.

Dude, for your usage you don't need 4k or HDR. What kind of set do you have now? I'd stick with that. Don't buy a brand new TV for a bunch of features you won't be using. Sports on Cable and blu ray movies are gonna look the same on a 1080p set. Hell, cable might even look worse as it's a 720p or 1080i signal.

Ehh you guys are right About Jarnet's current situation. But looking forward, especially as they say they don't update very often at all. It might not be a bad idea to spend a little extra to have some semblance of future proofing with true HDR WCG. It all depends on the price they're looking to spend though and how large of a TV they are looking for. The 40" 6290 is a phenomenal choice for someone who isn't quite ready to make the jump to HDR 4k quite yet.

My current set is a 32" 1080P Samsung LCD screen. 40-43 is about as big as I want to go. Most of my time gaming is on the PC, and my desk is 5-6 feet away from the TV. I'll have to decide if future proofing is worth the extra couple hundred or maybe I will just wait it out a bit more.

Hmmmm. See what kind of deal drops for the 43" 800D. If it's not compelling go with the 6290 40" for $300.

Just got a pro and these are my settings below. Does it look okay or am I missing something?

The tv is an LG OLED 1080P CURVED 2015 model 55".

Looking for some insight here to make sure I'm getting the best I can!

When I go to the PS4 video output info on the Pro it says:

Resolution: 1920 x 1080 - 60 Hz
Color Format: RGB
HDR on your TV: Not Supported
HDCP: 1.4

Is this okay?

Thanks guys!

Got my E6 in.

Input lag is fine in game mode. I cannot tell a difference compared to my older LED which was 32 or 34ms.

Ive got a lot of settings adjustment to do.

You could also check your RGB settings (limited or full).

So I checked LG's site:

65" C6 - 52.5 lbs with stand (41.0 lbs w/o)
55" C6 - 36.4 lbs with stand (29.1 lbs w/o)

Wow.

hhmmmm....My C6 finally "shipped" and. it says 55lbs on the shipment page..

man I hope they accidentally gave me a 65"er...lol. doubt it.

but it would make up for them placing a hold on my order, without letting me know, JUST because I messaged them about options regarding shipping address change. I understand why they would place a hold, but let me know Geez...If I didn't call to find out why it hasn't shipped...I could've been waiting God knows how long. They apologized, but no speed up delivery. Oh well...I still appreciate the Great deal in the first place.

I've been using the PS4 Pro all day on my E6. Honestly, the HDR input lag isn't that bad. I guess you get used to it.

Having said that, I haven't tried an FPS in HDR yet. Could be a train-wreck in terms of latency.

Oled people, what are you setting your color output to? Limited or rgb? I always had my og PS4 at limited and tv black level low.

Rest of the settings I left on automatic.

I set mine to full and everythign else to automatic. Works perfectly and the HDR in uncharted 4 set a new benchmark for me. I've never seen anything on that level video wise.

At that size range, I would look at monitors first. A perfect pixel 40"-43" Wasabi Mango isn't too expensive, compared to a 4K TV, you trade HDR (which is a while away from becoming mass adopted on the PC platform anyway) for lower input lag and Freesync, possibly G-Sync via hacked drivers. My advice, if you opt for a 50"+ monitor, shipped via crate or bust.

I can already tell you that you will enjoy it immensely, especially when you first get it because you are moving up in size significantly while hanging onto a major pixel density boost.

I've moved up from a 27" 1440p monitor to a 65" (US) KS800 With 2 months of extensive usage, I haven't had any input lag issues in or outside games, my k/d ratio in BF4 is exactly same as on the monitor. My 27" had 14ms input lag, I could not tell a difference while I was mirroring for a few days before putting the monitor away.

If you want to wait, TV's should compete better with monitors due to OLED prices eventually coming down and OEM's aware of input lag relevance but on the other hand, DP 1.4 OLED monitors are coming too...

I don't regret buying the TV, I love the move to the living room but eventually when it's time to upgrade in a 2-3 years, I'll look at monitors first, since PC and OTA TV have been my only inputs for a while. Large monitors are still mostly exotic Korean brands but they have been trendsetters in the past with 1440p models.

Ok but dont you have to match black levels? Full color would be black level high and limited would be low?

I didn't have to. It looked great at the default setting. The only game that was very dark was Infamous Last light but since I don't plan on replaying it I didn't bother calibrating for it. BTW, it looks like your petition is really gaining traction. Good job. I can't speak for others but I personally really appreciate it. I also hope we get a patch for the HDCP problem soon. I can't watch blurays until they do

Not exclusively. If you have The 4K setup with DIRECTV you can order and watch this 4K on any set.

Hello all

New poster looking for advice.

Didn't want to go through the whole thread so I'll just get right to it.

I have a regular PS4 and might upgrade to Pro one day and really interested in Scorpio which I will probably buy also. I also will be getting the Switch but that hardly will be 4K so...

Anyways.. I will first need a 4K TV. I will use it for movies and gaming. A lot of gaming. I don't want to buy a TV that will make me unhappy with my purchase and I also don't want to go way overboard if I don't have to so I need some assistance.

I love smooth motion and preferably no lag or choppy movement if you know what I'm talking about. Black being BLACK with beautiful colors. Little to no artifacts. All the cool stuff of modern TVs. I am also afraid of image retention/burn in...

Is LG OLED65E6V an overkill or is that something I should be looking at? I really like the image quality on LGs OLED UHD screens but I've also heard they have slight smoothness issues while panning.

I also like many of Samsungs TVs but they seem to lose a bit of the deep black and darker colors when viewed at an angle. OLEDs are better in that regards.

So.. any words of advice?

I thought that was only for UFC 200

that's great if that's the case..

but unfortunately my cousin isn't getting his 4K tv until this week. :(

would've been one hell of a UFC Party. :/

Fom what I understand, the LG OLEDs suffer from severe lag in hdr (67.5ms):
