Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that there has been considerable acclaim for the PlayStation 5’s classic limited-time console themes.

To celebrate the brand’s 30th anniversary, the company released limited-time themes recreating the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 designs.

Limited-Time Availability & Future Plans​

Sadly, the designs will be leaving tomorrow, but Sony has noted that they’re working on bringing back these four themes in the coming months due to the positive responses. Further, they clarified that there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future.

Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow. Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.

My guess is they're looking at reducing the boot times involved with the themes. Substantially longer boot times that I'm sure don't make the rest of the engineering team happy.

It's been made clear that this was a special project made by one of Sony's team outside of the normal development process. If anything, this sounds like they are committed to keeping the themes long term. The code for this is probably not formally integrated into the rest of the OS, and it's unlikely they would allow this (previously unexpected) feature to hold up new releases of the OS.

Maybe I'm over analyzing this, but it sounds like removing this (as originally planned) and then reintroducing it sounds like a lot of work - work that would only be worth it if themes will be better integrated as a permanent part of the OS. Although they are not working on other themes right now, it's a step in the right direction and I'm happy to wait a few months to get them back to ensure it works cohesively with the rest of the OS.

Part of me feels like limited themes is stupid. You should own a theme for your console. They got schooled by their own PS4 themes because you’d get one just by preordering a game. Theory: They're going to re-release this with a grand rollout of other console themes.

Custom themes/Store themes will return.

I honestly think it's about the boot time. You can't really have a dev team work really hard on minimizing boot time only to introduce something that drastically increases boot time. Years of hard work thrown out so that people can get a nostalgia kick that also devalues PS5.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony promises to return it and just never does.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Sony's first-party studios employ some frightfully talented programmers, but Sony, the corporation, couldn't program its way out of a paper bag. Why this is remains a mystery to me.
