PlayStation 5’s Classic Console Themes to Return After Positive Fan Response (no plans to create additional themes in the future)

My guess is they're looking at reducing the boot times involved with the themes. Substantially longer boot times that I'm sure don't make the rest of the engineering team happy.
I think they're actually going to convert them into a theme framework so devs can create general themes. They will be a part of it when it releases.

I didn't bother with them in the first place knowing they're time-limited. Definitely not going to bother if Sony brings them back as paid themes.

I think it's piss funny that Sony are taking something as benign as a fucking free theme away from their users. What a dog shit company.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Theory: They're going to re-release this with a grand rollout of other console themes.

Custom themes/Store themes will return.

They'll stack nicely in Folders when they finally add those too, right?

I honestly think it's about the boot time. You can't really have a dev team work really hard on minimizing boot time only to introduce something that drastically increases boot time. Years of hard work thrown out so that people can get a nostalgia kick that also devalues PS5.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony promises to return it and just never does.

If you're right, then shame on Sony and the Playstation team. Put your pride aside and give consumers what they want! Not what you like the PS5 to be.

Always have to be careful when giving customers "what they want"

I can't begin to tell you how many people I've seen "get what they want" only to complain about it later. People might like the themes now, but subconsciously feel like the PS5 is not as technologically sound as they expect because of the boot time.

I can't begin to tell you how much effort goes into reducing boot time on devices. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a major KPI for the team.

It's like people who complained at first about not having loading screens with tips and tricks or the subway scenes in Spider-Man Remastered. At the end of the day you need to focus on progress and not nostalgia. One only goes so far.

Why take away what people already have?

They were always temporary when they first announced them. I thought they would have been gone sooner.

I think they're going to rework them to remove the '30th Anniversary' splash screen, etc., as well as what T Three said

The boot time of the 30th anniversary theme was the amount of time it took for the animation and sound to play. They're not going to reduce that unless they reduce the length of the animation and sound.

The nostalgia kick with this was entirely optional. People who hate fun didn't have to use the themes at all. If Sony were worried about devaluing PS5 they didn't have to release it in the first place.

No, it's longer than that, the general boot is much slower. It didn't seem properly integrated. It was as if it wasn't a boot animation and instead an extra layer. As if the machine would boot up and then run this as a sequence.

Again, things might be optional, but that doesn't mean it doesn't come with consequences, sometimes unforeseen and unintended. It was just supposed to be a fun thing for the 30th anniversary and obviously took a life of its own.

They probably need to rewrite the sequence so it can actually be a proper boot screen and minimize how long it takes after turning the PS5 on or bringing it out of rest mode.

They did say they were temporary the day they announced them. Nobody should be shocked.

But, you're probably right about charging.

There was also a bug where you had to enter your passcode twice if you had that enabled. Or back out once and then back into the passcode and enter it. Either way, you saw the passcode screen twice.

Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow. Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.
While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we’re excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.

It's hilarious to me that Sony says they need to announce that they will bring it back after announcing that they are taking it away.

Like bro you maintain the OS, just don't take it away lmao.

OS builds are probably planned months in advance. Probably at least 2 months.

You have the current build that people are currently using, you have a release candidate, and you have a beta build. The release candidate probably by policy requires at least 30 days of QA and the beta build probably has a 30 day change freeze requiring no new additions before it goes into testing as a release candidate.

Note these are made up time frames to give context to why things don't happen overnight. They can fix something with an emergency change, but something like this? Yeah, I'm not surprised that they're not just rolling back the firmware update and it's already been removed from the latest firmware.

There was also a bug where you had to enter your passcode twice if you had that enabled. Or back out once and then back into the passcode and enter it. Either way, you saw the passcode screen twice.

Wow... I didn't know that. Even more reason why they would need to incorporate it properly. But that's exactly my point is that it didn't seem like a boot level boot screen and that the system was basically booting up twice.
