Yes but a lot of it is the CPU and ram drive both next gen consoles will have. Games are being held back in scope because of under powered CPUs. Upping the CPU side 4-5x times will give developers lots of potential to do much more. The super fast ram drives to help with load times will be incredible and get us spend more playing and less watching load screens.

I don't mean to sound like a Sony fanboy, but in my opinion as long as PS5 isn't significantly less poweful than Scarlett they're covered. They have super talented studios and they haven't been afraid of introducing new big IP's this gen. Sure Microsoft had some nice games at this year's E3, but nothing I would call a system seller.

and if Sony doesn't have hardware for Raytracing, these would basically cancel eachother out, and even give the Xbox an advantage whenever a game uses Raytracing...
it is kinda weird that Sony didn't say if their syetem actually has hardware to help with it, since that's a pretty big deal if they don't... Raytracing without specializes hardware is very demanding, everyone who tried running RTX enabled games on GTX hardware knows this.

That's address in the biography, it's suggested they used the space issue as the public reason to avoid controversies or giving Nintendo a black eye, but the truth is Square and Nintendo's engineers could not hit the performance benchmark square wanted, and the PlayStation could (in fact they were one of the first devs Sony allowed to code to the metal for PS1, even though at that moment in time Sony was very worried about such practice. Square actually helped them rewrite part of the API for better performance, using the tricks they found during ff7 development). The square president at the time made the call to abandon all n64 testing and development (remember square invested heavily in SDI workstations thinking that would lend itself to easy n64 development). Reading it all is super fun and fascinating.

Devs working on the same game for both systems say PS5 is more powerful. Specifically it was said to be "definitively more powerful". To me that indicates somewhere in the range of 20-30% more. They wouldn't bother to mention it if it was anything like 10%.

You see now this makes sense and I think that would be a smart move on Microsofts behalf, howeverrrrr if history is any indication that won't probably make them the console sales leader. PS3 released a year later at hundreds more but was outselling the cheaper Xbox 360 world wide almost every single month during its lifetime.

I'd be very surprised if Scarlet isn't demonstrably more powerful than PS5. Microsoft is committed to it (Phil doubled down on this after the E3 presser), can eat any loss per console they choose and can charge a very high "premium" price point with their 2 console model (affordable and "monster eater") strategy. I just don't see them losing the power fight. They want that title very, very badly after this gen when being underpowered hurt them so badly.

Yet PS3 got its ass handed to them in the USA which is why the final world wide sales numbers were almost even in the end. It's not even close. Sony doesn't want to repeat PS3 vs 360 NPD ever again.
On the ray tracing from, has either specifically said their next gen system will support it in hardware? I know the latest directx will include it, but that won't get the same result as a GPU that has it baked in.

Tech doesn't stand still, the sooner these console launch, the sooner devs will start heavily investing in ray tracing research. The sooner that happens, the sooner the while industry sees a massive switch, from future engine designs to education of employees. That switch makes raytracing not just a gimmick or fun trick, but the path forward. From there the systems after ps5/xtwo will have massively benefits from all that investment. All that happens if you wait till 2023 is you push the dev investment and industry switch point way further down the line.

Worldwide numbers don't concern me as much as the sales numbers in my country. If Sony can avoid a repeat of the 360/PS3 NPD, they will. Not to mention Wii/PS3. Only reason 360 was such a huge hit with 3rd party devs was it's dominating success of over PS3 in the west. No way Sony let's MS launch $100 cheaper out here.

I am going to put on my tinfoil hat and put this out there: What if MS actually only has plans for one sku at launch and they have been purposely leaking the 2 sku rumor with one uber powerful sku to misdirect competition? What if Lockhart IS the launch sku and Anaconda is actually their codename/plan for mid gen? Could MS just launch with a somewhat weaker and significantly cheaper console with Gamepass being their hook? Nintendo has shown repeatedly most powerful is not needed to be top dog.

Devs might not be saying more powerful based on TFlops count, but on things that help development (bandwidth, tools) instead of raw power (trying to think like a dev).
I don't see room for much power difference this time, each brand customizations to the APUs might be what devs are talking about.

20-30% more powerful? This I doubt. We're likely looking at a power difference of the PS5 holding a steady 60fps in multiplatform titles whereas Scarlet sometimes dips into the mid to low 50s.
Well, people buy consoles for Multiplattform titles. If they look, run and play best on the Xbox console, people will buy this. But we will see next year.
Also, you can play almost ALL your Xbox OG, Xbox 360 and all Xbox one games for FREE. Also, MS has game pass at a very competitive price.
They have so much value compared to Sony. It's not even a contest.

Almost ALL turns out to be a limited selection of titles, still you have quite a bit to choose (if you already own those titles), but like with other claims about Xbox you are over exaggerating hence the conclusion. You keep quoting GamePass and it is a fine service then you note the fact you need to pay for Xbox LIVE Gold for MP and with PSNos you can download titles and do not have to pay for MP and the value proposition perspective changes...
It is a fine console but one that released 1 year after PS4 Pro at a $100 higher price (somehow it is represented as this punching above its weight underdog monster) that is now a year closer to its successor(s) than the competition.

There is potential in this. Smoother frame rate, better texture filtering, and higher resolution and AA (maybe through downsampling) could really help some PS3 titles shine quite a lot more...

This tells me two things;
1) i have more disposable than previous generations
2) it's harder to find a solution that matches the ever expanding set of possibilities and requirements consumers have.
I predict the success criteria for this generation, which seem to be around hardware grunt with a smidge of service, will have flipped heavily by the end of it.

I still think exclusives matter provided they're top quality. Also there are a lot of important factors you've missed:
- Price. Yes XONEX is the most powerful console right now, but it's not a coincidence that Sony keeps releasing limited editions of standard PS4's and that Pro's rarely appear in official sales.
- Sony will finally offer (PS4) backwards compatibility in their next console.
- Where your friends are. I'm a SP guy so I don't care, but many people like to play multiplayer and they wouldn't move to a different ecosystem if their friends wouldn't do the same.
- Game Pass is not going to be keep appearing in incredible 1$ offers forever. Microsoft is only doing that right now to build a large userbase. With that said I definitely think Sony needs to step up with PS+ or offer a similar service (PS Now is different and not worldwide afaik).

Good point. I think the main things behind the power difference will be a combination of TF and the custom SSD.
If devs are saying there's a difference there must be something to it. We're light on info so we have to go deep into the wording, lol.
Generally, I would say it doesn't really matter much, most people are already in their lanes.

Unless the PS5 has Bloodborne 2 and PS2/PS3 BC from physical media I think I'll pass at launch. They'll both outclass the XboneX and PS4Pro so I don't much care for how powerful they'll be towards one another. This won't be another xbone PS4 power to price snafu like this gen's launch was.

The source is here. If Sony pulls this off without letting MS know the actual specs, keeps it cheap and manages to do a summer of Fall, that's going to be some good meltdown.
I'm more interested on what next gen games from Sony will look like. That halo cut scene was disappointing if that was what next gen xbox is showing what it can do, but a part of that is that I don't know what technically would make that scene next gen. Microsoft and Sony needs to make sure they show us the differences in power in a an over the top manner to show the power differences between this gen and next. That Spiderman ssd thing was a good start but they should have shown something like that in a press conference to us gamers.

According to Phil Spencer (as per that Colin video), we're not going to notice next gen by the visuals like past gens but by the added features. A bit of an odd thing to say, either Phil has little faith in his system or he's accepted the fact that MS are rarely the ones to push the visual envelope. Diminishing returns or not, games should still look noticeably better.
As always, I'll be looking to Sony and their tech wizards to show us what a next gen system can really do.
