PlayStation 5 [OT] Taking Over The World One SSD At A Time

I wrote out a long (and respectful) response and decided to scale it back and say: time will tell.

I would love to be able to use my ps4 peripherals on the ps5 at least in the beginning. Why not give me the choice?

If they "had confidence" in the new dualsense they wouldn't force it. It would be so amazing and revolutionary that people wouldn't even want to use a dualshock on the ps5.

This is not about innovation at all, it is about forcing customers to do what they want them to do, period.
It's not about 'forcing' customers to do anything. It's about encouraging devs to go all in on supporting the new gamepad. It's also been the way consoles have worked for generations. There's nothing shady about it. Sony has their path, Microsoft has theirs. Both are valid.

May have already been pointed out but I wasn’t aware Sony had such large control over Spider-Man.

I was a hardcore MCU fan a few years back, I remember reading Marvel's history and I think it was sometime in the 90's they went deep into bankruptcy and had to sell a lot of their major assets off just to stay floating, X-men were sold of to Fox and Spiderman was sold off to Sony.

Although Sony themselves handled Spiderman very poorly in recent years, especially with Garfield's Spiderman, the MCU and Kevin Feige did a excellent job in re-inventing Spiderman and resurrecting him in line with his comic depiction, soon after the crazy success of Spiderman Homecoming, Sony decided to capitalise on its success and develop the Spiderman (2018) game which was another massive success.

Rumour:

It’s 4Chan but was right about the details sent out for SOP.

I looked at the leak, the same source is also claiming there will be a light hardware revision upgrade, as well as a teardown with Digital Foundry which will feature a rundown of the system as well as some new and unspecified features from the system itself.

The image is what I previously said that was gonna happen. And for the most part it’s correct and will be proven more so in the next couple of weeks. A tear down will come not too long after the State of Play, at max 2 weeks. The price will be revealed and preorders will be available this month. Now I’m allowed to give some more information. There will be more announcement in a couple of weeks. I’m not Sure if it will be a dedicated PlayStation event Or if it will be associated with the GamesCOM opening night live. But, more is coming. Sony still has a big multiplayer game coming close to the launch of the PS5. Some other tidbits I know is

- a slight hardware revision/upgrade.
- the major third party deals that Sony has secured. Such as locked off content exclusively for Sony that will definitely stir up some controversy. One in which that will be revealed in a couple days.
- the detailing/revision of Its services that will come soon such as PlayStation Now and Ps Plus.
-( I hid the secret Sony game somewhere in the text.)
I’ll be in touch

Funniest thing is that Sony could have bought Marvel entirely but just settled for Spider-Man... 🤦🏻‍♂️

Everything is easy in hindsight. Sony could've bought whole Marvel. Sony couldve invested in Epic games earlier. This is what business is. You take the best possible decision that you think is right given the current information. Marvel was dying at that time and nobody gave a shit about Iron-man, thor, captain America etc. Only spiderman was popular. Who knows, if Sony had indeed bought Marvel there might never have been a MCU and all and it wouldve burned to the ground.

I assume the 'controversial' locked down content that was being talked about for release over the 'next couple of days' was likely the announcement that Spiderman would be playable exclusively on the Playstation versions of the Avengers video game? Seems like that one HAS stirred up the hornets nest with people even clamoring to see if there's a way to SUE Sony for not allowing Spiderman to be playable on the other platforms?

Believe me, Marvel and Disney tried to put the screws to Sony and force them to give up their exclusivity last year as I recall. As a result, Sony is going to make sure they milk ANY AND ALL advantage that they can from the piece of Spiderman rights that they own. They know they missed the boat with the rest of the Marvel universe and they are NOT going to leave any dollars on the table if there is any way they can avoid it. ;)

From their Blog:

Which existing PS4 peripherals/accessories will work on PS5?

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
Sweeeeeeeeeet. G27 for GT7 <secured>

All this buzz from folks in the know about Sony firing off the checks. The Avengers having Spidey exclusive to PS isn't too shocking to me.

I'm interested to see just how..severe(?) the moneyhatting is. People seem to insinuate it's big enough stuff it'll piss off the Xbox fanbase, which I mean...Spider Man pissed them off(and PC), so I'd imagine this would make them go ballistic.

We all know Sony paid Square Enix to get that exclusive content, but what if Sony is literally funding the development of this?
I guess people would still be mad about it even if Sony was giving their own money to make it happen.

So the train has jumped the tracks to this thread? Awesome, count me in for sure. Choo-choo m0th3r-Fu(K3rs! :) I know the State of Play didn't have the info some had hoped but I have a really strong feeling that THIS IS THE MONTH for other information we need like the backwards compatibility, UI of the system and maybe eve seeing what the system looks like in action. I just feel it!

Yeah, they would be upset regardless. I get it. I mean if you couldn't play Thor or Iron-Man for example, except on the Nintendo Switch or something. Yeah, I understand the angst. But that's business. The same kind of thing applies to true exclusives to one console or the other as well when it comes to third party games. Just part of how the game is played.

For the most part they are biased expect for one or two of them.

Again there are reasons they get to fly out and get the scoop on the new Xbox hardware and reasons I would never divulge on this forum or in PMs.
This has made me very curious, I don't want to put words in your mouth but my guess is that there is some serious politics going on behind the curtains between DF, Microsoft and/or Sony.

Sony has the contract of Spider-Man in video games. Untill the contract expires, they have full control of the character. They don't need to pay SE, SE is the one begging Sony to allow Spider-Man in their game to secure more sales at least on the ps4.

What's the big deal about SOCOM? I'm a medieval fantasy/Sci-Fi/Horror gamer meself, so this just looks like a Call of Duty game to me in 3rd person.

It was one of the early and good co-op shooters. I think that it benefits mostly from a lot of nostalgia though. If it had continued on it probably would have been replaced by Call of Duty and other shooters anyway but because it didn't...people are kind of sentimental about it. I don't know today how there's be much room for yet another military FPS either, but maybe we'll find out, if the rumors are true! I'm not huge on FPS games myself and was never a SOCOM fan as a result of that. Maybe it had some other magic I'm not aware of that made it really special?

Have people noticed that Ghost of Tsushima has the same rain as TLOU2.The rain physics are manipulated different. But the wet clothes, the lightning & reflection on the wet surfaces. Look very similar. It's as if they are using the same rain system.

Looks like Sony ICE (Initiative for Common Engine?) team is integrating everything from assets to different rendering techniques of the many Sony team.

This is what having a centralized world wide studio has helped Sony studios to bring out the best looking games release after release.

I was actually confused about the ICE team as I didn't really understand what they do given the name and since the Sony first party studios didn't even use the same engine.

I've been watching a lot of Mark Cerny's talks and presentations recently and he spoke about the formation of the ICE team, it was initially devised by Shuhei Yoshida and it's aim was to facilitate the developers to create games on the new generational hardware, such as the PS3 which was difficult to programme and develop for. Over the years the ICE team lead by Mark Cerny and others has basically collaborated with developers and studios both first and third party and given them the guidance, tools, information and skills needed to get their graphics engines as well as games up on running on the new Playstation hardware.

It's actually a very cleaver idea and explains why we've seen so many stunning games both visually and in terms of gameplay on the Playstation, especially since the first Uncharted game. These kind of strategies are extremely effective and we can really see it pay off with all these amazing games Sony has been revealing and releasing.

Yeah I remember the ICE forming because the PS3 was a bitch to program for so they started up the ICE team and filled it with the best and cleverest programmers and coders to try and share all the knowledge of developing on the PS3 to different studios as they unlocked the system themselves and developed the software tools and libraries.
Like Sony's PS3 tech support team for all dev studios. Obviously with the PS4 being so easy to code for they shifted ICE from just tech support to full on connected developments.
N-ICE!

Sony literally moving gaming industry forward. Not sure about Microsoft though.

Many devs have been saying that the key to great looking games next gen will be PRODUCTION.

I'm guessing the ICE team will be a key for Sony Studios to share asset production as well as rendering technique to not only save development time but to make the best looking games possible.

Horizon Forbidden West's underwater assets looks to be lifted from Uncharted 4. I wouldn't be surprised if the Ghost of Tsushima's technique for the moving foliage and grass is the same implementation in Horizon 2 albeit improved.

Exactly. I remember at the time it started up it was seen as Sony trying to keep up/catch up with Microsoft since most people theorized that MS had the best and easiest developer tools, etc. That of course, didn't turn out to be entirely accurate. Still, I think the ICE team was really a critical part to Sony's success back then and even now. Thru that sharing of knowledge and technical know-how they also expanded and let it be a feedback loop FROM developers. So the work of the ICE team ended up helping to SHAPE Sony's development tools and even the hardware strategy. That gave them what they needed to design the PS4 into the massive success that it was, especially for developers. It will be fascinating to see how the PS5 benefits from all of this and if they were actually able to evolve the hardware much further given all the feedback from their customers the development teams. I think the early evidence from what we've heard is VERY positive. Will be fascinating to watch as the generation progresses!

Number one, no, not all games are supposed to be fun to play. Some of the best games I played had me captivated by the story and emotional journey they were taking me on. Just this year alone I played a couple games that literally had me crying. And it was nothing to do with how "fun" they were to play. And yes, one of them was TLoU2.

ND matured way past the sort of games like Jack & Daxter and Crash Bandicoot. There's a time for everything and this particular studio is now all about a different type of experiences. To top it all off, they are probably definitely the best studio in the world at that exact type of experiences. How can anyone just think they should go back to cartoony stuff nowadays? That's insane.

It's not about graphically intensive games, it's about writing, gameplay, music, art direction, animation and some strange special sauce that apparently nobody else is able to copy. There's plenty of games with realistic graphics that are not great or even good for that matter.

And no, I've never played that J&D game, it's not my kind of game anyway, I'm into different experiences. Played Crash Bandicoot way back in the day if that helps though, and obviously have seen gameplay from this other game you're asking for.
I fully support your opinion. There are thousands of "fun" games, yet only a handful of attempts from the gaming industry to achieve something more. Gaming is already bigger than other forms of entertainment in terms of money it produces. It's time it started producing mature content for those people who are looking for something more than "fun" in the medium.

lol haha.

btw, i need to see how long the ps4 controller lasts. i am playing ghost of tsushima in really long sessions and it hasnt required that many recharges. pretty sure im getting at least 8 hours of battery time.
If you put a controller to charge after every gaming session, the chances of running out of battery are almost none. But of course you can blame it on poor battery if you are forgetful.

The thing with Apple is that their hardware is on a much shorter cycle than Playstation - usually 1 year for a refresh and 2 tops. So if they announce new products and pricing 4 months before release they reduce the value and attractiveness of current stock significantly.
Comparing phones and consoles isn't a good idea. Phones are social statements, too, because other people see what phone you have, all the time. That's why Apple grew a cult of followers, just like fashion brands. They could sell anything for any price and some people would still bite. There are more reasons why those are different, but this one is quite outstanding.

Now its hard to spot and certainly not as obvious as the first which is easy to see.

I know our DF friend Alex said pop in can be casued by many things, this is early code and any issues probably ironed out in a year.

Now what implications does this have, for those who said its cgi if so why would this be in it? Maybe someone can explain. Does this tell us anything?

Does this support the argument that it will look like this in game seeing as small flaws are shown? Does this support it being gameplay with the camera moved and no hud?
It's in-engine realtime running on PS5 devkit, probably captured from HDMI. That's why you see a lot of flaws and artefacts which will be worked on and eliminated in those places where they affect IQ and performance. That's how you make games. If you want answers why the particular artefacts happen in particular places, you could try ask someone with extensive knowledge in realtime graphics, like The Cherno. But I'd only see the point in it for educational purposes. HZD2 is far from being finished.

Ghost of Tsushima without “loading cap” on the PS5? I think Sucker Punch can make the loading be like fade to black and fade back in.
With SSD, GoT has almost no loading between fast travels. I keep wondering if they're already benefiting from the software part of Oodle/Kraken combo because it seems like a major improvement while playing.

Everything is easy in hindsight. Sony could've bought whole Marvel.
I agree. I was offered to buy bitcoin for $5 a piece many years ago but I didn't want to spend money on something which seemed like a pyramid scheme. Well, here I am now ;).

It's like saying that Demon Soul's is like Golden Axe but with better graphics. See what I did here? Socom is a tactical co-op game, nothing like COD. It's sad that COD is dominating the FPS genre so much these days, especially for people who hate it, like me.

You know, that's a good point about SOCOM. I over-simplified it in my earlier comment as well, but you're right that SOCOM was a shooter with heavy emphasis on tactics and team tactics. So in a lot of ways it was superior to COD and MOH. I'm just not sure that the popularity of such an approach holds up today..at least beyond a more niche group of players. I suspect it didn't at the time and that's why the series went away. It had a really hard core fan base though. Might be interesting to see if they could come back with a new version and then attract enough of an audience to make it truly viable agin. Maybe we'll get an answer soon!

So that's definitely 3 out of 4 consoles sold over 100million units and the PS3 is up there with almost 90million at last count.

Despite what the Xbox fanboys delude themselves with... Sony might actually know a thing or two about making and selling consoles.
PS3 was also licensed to an Indian manufacturer later, I wonder if it's included.

We'll get no new reveals on Thursday, but we'll get updates on already revealed games. Which means that Spider-Man MM, Ratchet RA, Demon's Souls and RE8 are on the table.

Nothing from first parties (for PS5 updates anyway) so none of those are on the table...

It doesn't. This telephone game is a bit embarrassing, especially when the source is in front of people the whole time and stuff still gets passed around wrong.

The post literally says that "Sony has major exclusives still left to show. Not including the deals Sony has secured with 3rd party publishers." We know that there will be no first party announcements, so this is obviously wrong.

The only things this post got right is that the State of Play would be this week, and that it would be announced on Monday. Yeah... I could have guessed that, especially after everybody has been saying it would be either this week or the next.
